Street Fighter IV Competition @ Steaks on South: Presented by Geekadelphia, CEX, & Focus Attack

We’ve got an event planned that is going to be down right fierce.

… did you see what I did there?

We’ve teamed up with CeX and Focus Attack to bring you all an epic Street Fighter IV tournament, taking place right at Steaks on South. That’s right, the cheesesteak joint. They’ve got an upstairs, and it will be lined with monitors, gaming consoles, and combo-slinging gamers come Thursday, September 23rd.

Local DJs Fatboymonster and Jayvert will be spinning beats through out the night, throwing in some classic gaming riffs into traditional dance tunes. You may have caught them at our events at North Bowl, or helping hipsters tear up the dance floor at PYT with their sick mixes.

Prizes? You bet. Focus Attack is giving away some SERIOUS swag at the event for you top gamers.

Grand Prize:

  • MadCatz Super Street Fighter 4 Tournament Edition Joystick S for Playstation 3

Runner Up Prizes:

We’ll also have some Microsoft Points cards, store vouchers from CeX, and some other misc swag to dish out to winners, runners up, or folks that show off some sort of exceptional skill. Our friends PopChips will be also be stopping by the party, dishing out free snacks for you hungry gamers.

Doors open at 7pm, so you can grab a bite to eat from our gracious hosts, and the tournament kicks off at 7:30pm sharp. We’ve created a Facebook event page, for those of you who need reminders. You can check that out, here.

Hadouken! Street Fighter IV Comes to the iPhone!

I love my fighters, and when I heard Street Fighter IV was coming to the iPhone I was cautiously optimistic to say the least.  But recently over at Gamepro.com a video of the actual gameplay put all my worries to rest.  The game looks phenomenal for an iPhone game, and could finally give the platform a solid fighter; which is something it is severely lacking.

The game will only have a roster of 8 fighters when it drops in March with: Ryu, Ken, Guile, Blanka, Chun-Li, Dhalsim, M. Bison and Abel present and accounted for.  But to make up for the lack in fighters the game is going to carry a $9.99 price point, which is very competitive for the higher end iPhone game market.

My only worry is the controls (which there was some hot debate over how they would accomplish this), I really get weird when they put the buttons on the screen.  I guess I am always a little scared I am going to break the screen, because I can be a bit hard on my controllers. Does anyone else have this same problem? So look for it in March, I am curious to see how this will look on the iPad.

Left 4 Dead Bears Make Us Feel All Warm … and Bloody … Inside

left4deadasbears

Seriously, just look at their adorable faces! Clearly ready for the bludgeoning of so many zombies’ undead, less-than-adorable faces. We know, we know: It’s been a few months since Left 4 Dead dropped on your 360/PC and you’ve been wondering if you’ll ever pick it up again. What with teh Hayloez and Street Fighter IV, you’ve got so much on you plate as it is! But seriously, picture this: A Left 4 Dead PC mod with nothing but park rangers coming after you and you’re in a group of adorable bears, swinging spike-lined pic-uh-nic baskets over your heads and throwing molotovs full of skin-melting honey. PERFECT!

Steam modding community, you orders are clear. Get on it!

Tournament Gaming Alive and Well in West Philly

Though you may have already seen the video above over at the Philadelphia Weekly website, we couldn’t help but share it here as well. Last week we headed over to University Pinball in West Philadelphia to talk to a few fighting game tournament players in their element (and maybe to use it as an excuse to play Street Fighter IV before it’s impending console release). Brandon DeShields (aka: Demon Hyo) and Doug Morris (aka: Rick_Son) took time out of their evening to tell us about the tournament scene in Philly, the history of University Pinball, how they got started and how you can get involved. Oh, and yeah, we did get totally schooled in Street Fighter IV, just in case you were wondering.

Do we love Street Fighter? I think the answer is an obvious and resounding “YES!” Check out the rest of our various SF-related blatherings below:

-University Pinball immediately following the arrival of SFIV
-Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (enough already!) gets a release date…sorta
-Jeff Walewski reports live from the “Street Fighter IV Fight Club” in NYC thrown by Capcom
-We even covered the silly movietwice. (We’re confused too.)

Street Fighter IV Fight Club NYC — Geekadelphia Attends

Coming directly from our one and only adventurous NYC reporter/event attender Jeff Walewski, an enormous gallery of pictures from the limited-attendance Brooklyn Street Fighter IV event this past Friday. He got to get his hands on with not just any Street Fighter IV but the as-yet-unseen in America console versions for PS3/360. He tried with regular old controllers (surprise surprise! 360′s D-pad is still lacking and the analog stick doesn’t make up for it) as well as the arcade sticks they had on-hand. He talked to the producer of Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix and got a somewhat solid (though entirely unofficial) answer on when the game’s coming out (likely November) and he even got a chance to meet Ryu and Zangief in real life! Hit the bump for tons of pictures from the event! (And thanks, Jeff!)

Street Fighter IV Busts Up Philly

My affinity for videogames, especially those of the fighting variety, is no secret. I’ve been known to throw down the gauntlet over every iteration of Smash Bros. since it’s inception (with no signs of slowing) and I’m prone to lecture people on the irreconcilable D-pad found on the Xbox 360 controllers, specifically due to it’s fighting game implications (as well as it’s Bionic Commando: Rearmed implications, but that’s another conversation entirely).

It should be no surprise to you then, fellow Geekadelphians, when I say that the moment I found out Street Fighter IV had arrived in Philadelphia, I was making plans for my bee-line towards it. After playing (and thoroughly enjoying) the game at this year’s E3 in LA last month, I set out to discover the differences between the direct-from-Japan Capcom machines playable at E3 and the direct-from-Japan “gray market” systems that are now being played in Philly (and other cities nationwide). University Pinball in West Philly held the answers — hit the bump for all the info.
