The Guild: Season 3 on DVD, Impressions & Giveaway

Update: Giveaway is over! Congrats to Katie. Your DVD is in the mail.

Ah, The Guild. Our favorite web-series created by one of our favorite redheads. No offense, Phillyist Melissa.

Season 3 dropped on DVD back in February, and New Video Group, the distribution company handling The Guild’s releases, was kind enough to send me a copy.

The big question that arises when it comes to this release, is when a series is offered up for free online, why bother purchasing it on DVD? After-all, you can catch it online whenever you want. Right?

Well, like the Season 1 & 2 DVD bundle released last year, Season 3 comes loaded with a ton of special features, easily making it well worth the purchase, including a number of featurettes, gag reels, and more.

Highlights on the Season 3 DVD include a Tips for Making a Web Video feature, some great content around the famous Do You Want To Date My Avatar music video, interviews with Wil Wheaton’s hilarious Axis of Anarchy group, and an instructional tutorial on how to build Vork’s sword.

Since the bonus features aren’t available on the internet anywhere, real fans of the series should absolutely purchase the DVD. You’re looking at a solid hour-plus of special features.

You’re also looking at a post that’s giving away Season 3 of The Guild on DVD. That’s right, one lucky reader will receive the copy I was sent. Just leave a comment with the name of your favorite Guild character for a chance to win. The winner will be selected at random, and notified on May 24th.

Good luck!

Dustin Talks Comics @ Pecha Kucha

Yes yes, I’m aware that Pecha Kucha 5 was like, nearly a month ago. In fact, I posted Sara Selepouchin’s Pecha Kucha video on April 20th. Sorry kids, but these HD videos are pretty large, and I can only upload one every week.

At last though, much to Dustin’s chagrin, I have his I Am Comics, And So Can You talk from last month’s Pecha Kucha, available online. Have a look into our favorite illustrator’s world, and learn about his comic making process. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll fall in love.

Nicely done, Dustin.

Sara Selepouchin @ Philly Pecha Kucha: Pursue What Makes You Happy

Geekadelphia mega-crush Sara Selepouchin presented at Pecha Kucha 5 at Studio 34 this past Saturday, and spoke to a rather large audience about pursuing what makes you happy. Currently the owner of Girls Can Tell printery, Sara creates some of my favorite handmade crafts here in Philadelphia.

Attendees had 20 seconds to go over 20 slides. The video is a bit long, but totally worth it.

Expect another video (or two!) over the next few days, as I slowly upload them. Great job, Sara!

Kirsten Dunst is a Hentai (Pervert)

Words can not describe this video, and once it is seen it can not be unseen.

Celebrities do wacky things when they go to Japan, and sometimes it’s better we don’t find out. I remember reading about this over the summer, and seeing the pictures of Dunst walking around Tokyo’s Akihabara district dressed like a Sailor Moon reject and thinking, WTF? I thought this could be a high-end art project by the enigmatic Takashi Murakami, but it turned out to be Dunst singing Turning Japanese (a song about Masturbation) dolled up like Sailor Tramp, while every campy Japanese stereo-type is personified on screen.

As much as I love Japanese culture thanks to McG, this throws down an inappropriate stereotype of Japanese culture, implying men are a bunch of perverts who like “cartoon porn”. Oh look! Wacky American girl has blue hair! Oh look! Wacky American girl has a really short skirt! Oh look! You are taking the Japanese people back 3 steps as a people. This clip is exploitative, plain and simple, and couldn’t they have auto-tuned Dunst’s voice?

The worst part about this is since it is Kirsten Dunst millions will see it and think,  “Man, those Japanese are a freaky bunch.” Out the window goes the hard work of pioneers such as Hayao Miyazaki and Mamoru Oshii legitimizing Japanese anime and culture as an artform, and more than simply naughty cartoons.  I think both her and McG owe the people of Japan an apology because this is going to take a while to live down for both the country and Dunst.

Video is after the jump contains some topless cartoon ladies and the end of Kirsten Dunst’s career, so be warned. (more…)

The Star Wars Title Crawl: Where Did It Go?

If your like me if you have seen your fair share of Star Wars films but one thing that has always bothered me, where exactly do the title crawls go? I know they start the film off and kind of drift off, but where exactly are they headed? Well apparently I wasn’t the only one with that question and some very talented individuals put together a very slick short film to answer that. Check out the video below!

Merry Christmas: I’m On A Sleigh!

It’s sort of like I’m On A Boat… only more Christmas-ish.

It’s two days away, but yeah… Merry Christmas, internets.

Thanks for the link, Colin.

Canon Boy and Nikon Girl Music Video

I know I am not the only camera geek who reads this site, and when I saw this video I almost lost it. The Nikon vs Canon divide quite literally has almost a Montague vs. Capulet air to it, which sometimes rivals your typical internet argument over Mac vs. PC. It me reminded of that moment when you scope a friends camera rig for the first time, and seeing whether he is a “Nikon guy” or a “Canon Guy” and how that sits with your personal belief system in camera hardware. Warning some language maybe a bit NSFW so turn down you speakers and don’t bother that guy next to you working on his TPS reports, enjoy the video.

With that, have a safe Halloween weekend, Philadelphia.

Thanks for the link, Steve!

Will You Mario Me?

Guest Post by Dr. J

I figured that, since I just saw this, maybe there was someone else who’s cockles could use some warming.

An industrious and smitten geek was looking for a unique angle at popping the question.  Using a software program called “Lunar Magic” that enables editing and customization of SNES Mario levels, he coded his request for her hand in marriage in coins, then somehow convinced his (presumably) unsuspecting girlfriend to play a level or two.

As ingenious as this is, I have to say that the highlight for me was the puppy freaking at the end.  Also, am I the only one who would probably be so consumed by the classic coin-collecting compulsion to completely miss any messages?  It makes me wonder what other subliminal messages I’ve been exposed to over the years…

enjoy!!

Global Geek Week: 52 Geeks, One For Every Week

My favorite geek: Samir Naga…naga…naganna work here anymore

For Global Geek Week, John Freeborn and I made this silly little video, showing off 52 of our favorite geeks. Yes, we spelled Grover wrong. Yes, I need to shave. But we had a good time, and it’s all for a good cause.

Everything’s Better When You Add Nathan Fillion

I am not a fan of Halo. Not so much because it’s a bad game — as a First Person Shooter it’s rock solid –but because I was mislead about Halo‘s supposedly deep and engaging storyline. Halo is a lot of things, but strong plot-wise? I don’t think so – far from it.

And while the latest push against the Covenant, Halo 3: ODST, is rife with military shooter tropes, Bungie has finally infused Halo with something largely missing from the franchise: personality, character. Namely, they injected Halo with a healthy dose of Nathan Fillion, who lends his voice and likeness as Gunnery Sergeant Edward Buck. If Nathan Fillion was something found on a spice rack, creative types would add a dash of him to everything. Said everything would then pop with smarmy charm and wit. And sex appeal.

This is the power of Nathan Fillion. He turns unbelievers into believers. He feeds the poor and he clothes the naked. And steals hearts while narrating Halo 3: ODST trailers.

Now I’ll be first in line to pick up Halo 3: ODST on September 22, in lieu of my “blah” attitude towards Halo. And it’s all thanks to Nathan Fillion. If, after watching this trailer, you aren’t sold on ODST, well, then you have no soul and I must say Good Day, Sir. Good Day, Sir!

Or Madam. ‘Cause we here at Geekadelphia ain’t sexist.

Cardboard Tube Fighting League: Video!

The folks over on Philly.com posted up a great video detailing the epic cardboard tube battle this past weekend. Have a look, and pay close attention to the fight between the Comcast Center and a certain cardboard clad vixen… also known as our own Bianca Cevoli. She fought bravely.
