Are You A Carbon Bigfoot?

carbonbigfoot

The talented people at Wink and Hello Viking have recently been held responsible for producing this Facebook app that calculates your personal carbon footprint so that all your friends can see how badly you abuse our natural resources, or how green you really are.

I chose to post this because it’s pretty awesome that PriceWaterhouseCoopers (the first professional US firm to announce carbon reduction efforts) has been really open minded about using social communities and geeky design firms to push their initiatives.

The app is designed well, functions almost seamlessly (I only encountered one bug) and does a good job of illustrating a rough estimate of your carbon footprint.  Now, it could be better, because it doesn’t ask whether you’re a vegetarian or carnivore.  This distinction makes a huge difference because of how much energy goes into processing meat products, but it’s a step in the right direction.  Hopefully more companies will follow… and this weekend I promise to eat less bacon.

With all the tips and links we get everyday, its hard to write up a post about every single one. I’ll be featuring a link round-up every other day or so, with fun stories around the interwebs. Let us know what you think, and thanks for all your tips!

Dead Rising Comes to Wii, Zombies Still Hate Delivery Trucks

dead_rising-van-pic-edit

Capcom’s Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop for Nintendo Wii shipped yesterday, February 24, and should be in stores today so you can fight the good fight against legions of undead… mall goers? Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Capcom’s next cadaver-cleaving franchise (first seen on Xbox 360 with Dead Rising) revisits the story of freelance journalist Frank West as he ventures into a suburban town on assignment only to find it’s ridden with brain-hungry republicans suburbanites.

This Xbox 360 port plays much like its predecessor, but differs slightly in that it uses Capcom’s tried-and-true Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition engine as well as utilizes the Wii’s signature motion control. The premise of the game remains: After taking refuge in a shopping mall, which happens to already be overrun with the undead horde (go figure), you have only a few days to rescue as many survivors as possible before salvation arrives. Now if only there were celebrity zombies included in this rendition.

Please Don’t Buy the Vintage Bisquick

Bisquick FailGross.  My friend Eric was keen enough to send me a link to this failure of a Craigslist ad.  I mean I could be wrong, this could be a really really valuable collector’s item, as a 16 year old unopened box of Bisquick.  But then again if it were really valuable, why would it be free? The warning on the craigslist ad says: “THIS IS NOT FOR EATING, THIS IS FAR BEYOND ITS EXPIRATION DATE AND IF YOU EAT IT, YOU ASSUME ALL RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY ADVERSE CONSEQUENCES. Expired baking mixes have been known to contain mold and other hazardous and/or toxic substances.“  I don’t know… all I can really say is “WTF?”

Life in New York City: In Lego?

nyc_legos

nyc_legos_3

Tim , John, and a plethora of other readers sent this to me a while ago, but I never quite got around to posting it up. Shame on me, because Christoph Niemann’s interpretation of New York City through Lego is absolutely incredible, and will certainly brighten your day.

I’d love to see someone in Philadelphia do the same. A lot of these could already apply to living here in Philly, especially this one. I swear, that perfectly tells the story of my daily walk through Rittenhouse Square on my way to work.

Enjoy, and be sure to check out Christoph’s official website. The little stick figure in the upper right corner dances.

Deadly Creatures: Fail

Wow. This game looks so fun.

We really wanted to score a sneak peak at Deadly Creatures for the Nintendo Wii, but all we could capture was this hysterical bug. Well, error. The spider isn’t the bug, I’m talking about the… you know what. Nevermind. Watch the friggin’ video.

Kevin Tong’s iSteamphone Tshirt

Custom Made Gears of War 2 Lego Figures

Gears of War 2 is, hands down, one of my favorite games released this year. Somehow Cliffy B was able to make these characters a bit more human, adding a love interest and a narrative that finally developed the story behind Gears of War. Finally the characters were less like hamburgers that could take an endless amount of bullets, and a bit more like people.

Well, thanks to a certain talented Lego enthusiast, there are some Gears of War 2 minifigs. He’s even made a Centaur! Unbelievable.

Have a look at his Flickr stream here for more awesome Lego creations.

Cylon Knit Cap Keeps You Toasty

Cylon Knit Hat

Blogger user Wonderfallz recently completed a very awesome knit cap that resembles the eyes and head of a Cylon Centurion.  She’s been working on it over the last 8 months and finished just in time to celebrate the final season of the series.

Interested in making your own?  She posted a follow-up on her blog that includes the pattern to make it yourself.

Thanks to Caroline for the tip!

Mario Kart Messenger Bag: BLUE SHELL!

mario-kart-blue-shell-bag

During my quest for more geeky gear, I came across this excellent Mario Kart-inspired messenger bag, featuring that notorious blue shell.

Brings back memories of my roommates, who, when a blue shell was fired, would leap up and scream BLUE SHELL! at the top of their lungs. I’m looking forward to some more bags by Etsy seller 16Bit. The Super Mario Bros 3 Boot Goomba pack is also quite nice, though I’m holding off for a Space Invaders satchel.

8-Bit Necklaces

galaga-necklace

Wow! You can pick up some seriously nice video game inspired necklaces off of Etsy seller Constantly Cute for $15 a pop.

She also has several machine gun inspired necklaces in her sales and current shop. I’m more a fan of these 8-bit jams though, especially the little villain from Dig Dug.

Left 4K Dead: Shoot Up Some Simple Zombies

left-4k-dead

If your PC is anything like my awful Dell laptop at work, there is absolutely no way you can run Left 4 Dead. And chances are, if you’re like me, you desperately want to. Especially during lunch. But alas, my lappy has the processor power of a cardboard box covered in duct tape.

Luckily, this 4K Javascript tribute to Valve’s awesome Left 4 Dead, is absolutely fantastic. You can shoot up some zombies, in-browser, in this Javascript game that only takes up 4k. That’s it!

Thanks to Brian for the link, who defeats zombies by biting THEM. They then turn into humans.
