Star Wars Mighty Muggs

Star Wars Mighty Muggs

Hasbro is releasing their own line of vinyl toys, Mighty Muggs, and they’ve got some pretty cute looking figures lined up. Marvel characters, Indiana Jones, and of course, Star Wars, are all thrown into the mix. I know a certain social media guru who is going to want the Chewy figure.

I recently discovered Jinxed here in Philly… I wonder if they’ll be carrying any of these. They carry a ton of designer vinyl. Maybe Brave New Worlds will. We shall see.

Massive Japanese Monster Toy Photo Collection

Massive Japanese Monster Toy Photo Collection

Make no mistake, Tim and I really like designer vinyl and action figures. We even made a video about it, starring a Storm Trooper. Remember that? Good times. Btw, a new one is coming soon.

Coop, a photographer / artist / Japanese toy collector living in Los Angeles, has an amazing collection of Japanese monster toys, which he has been photographing in his Flickr. Give it a look, but be warned, he takes hot n00dz of models, and it might not be safe for work if you open one of those galleries.

Cubesday: Cubicle Warfare Using An iBird

Cubesday: Cubicle Warfare Using An iBird

You know, I’m willing to accept the fact that I might be a bad person. Because every time I see a new, cute, adorable remote controlled toy, all I can think of are the ways I plan on using it as a means of reigning havoc inside my cubespace on my poor neighbors. The iBird… is no exception.

This cute little RC flyer simulates the flight of a bird using “realistic” flapping wings. I’m not sure how realistic two pieces of flimsy plastic are, but it still looks neat. The official website states that it’s “ultra-tough to survive the roughest landings,” which is good, because if I get one, it will need to survive the roughest of crashes-into-heads-of-coworkers.

Here’s a link to the video of the little guy in action.

Check it out at the UK retailer here.

Guitar Hero Carabiner: I Can Has?

Guitar Hero Caribener: Epic Fail

Remember when the Kimmel Center had that Guitar Hero competition? Did you miss it, just like everyone else? For those of you who did and don’t own a major gaming system, you can now get your Guitar Hero kicks on the go.

Not too long ago, Activision (publishers of everything from Pitfall! to Call of Duty 4) accidentally released the name of their upcoming portable version of Guitar Hero, forcing those of us so inclined on the internet to hold our collective breath in anticipation of a release sometime soon. Though Active have stayed mum on the release date, toy maker Basic Fun has released something to help us through these uneasy times: the Guitar Hero Carabiner .

Though, as the article says, the neck seems quite pointless, I imagine it’d be far more difficult to play the tiny little thing with buttons up there. Also, from an aesthetic perspective, the Carabiner would appear silly without the neck altogether. Design-wise, Basic Fun were in between a speaker cabinet and a hard place. Furthermore, at only $14.99 a pop, I’d bet strongly against there being a better Guitar Hero themed Carabiner on the market for a lower price.

Happy St. Skeletor Day!

Happy St. Skeletor Day!

Chances are, if you’re one of them single types, you might have been a little put off by our mass coverage of Valentine’s Day content yesterday. Despite how adorabul that puppy and piglet might have been, deep down inside, you still just wanted to eat them.

So jaded singles, rejoice! Today is St. Skeletor’s Day. Falling on February 15th of every year, the festival of St. Skeletor celebrates the following…

a.) The destruction of ‘lurrve’
b.) The destruction of saucy greetings cards
c.) The destruction of people with boyfriends/girlfriends

Want to take part? Visit the St. Skeletor Day webpage for more info. There’s even a Facebook group!

Halo Laser Tag: The Battle for Center City

Halo Laser Tag: The Battle for Center City

Ever look at Center City and think to yourself, “Wouldn’t it be great it this was empty of people and cars, allowing myself and some friends to play a giant game of laser tag?” And then, realizing you were already asking too much, you might have thought to go all in, “It’d be even better if the laser tag guns were actually from Halo!” Your day has come, my friend.

Clearly realizing there are a few people who like Halo, Jasman Toys’ replicas of the Covenant Plasma Pistol and Rifle have started showing up on Hot Topic shelves across the country, as well as online at Amazon and NewEgg – - though for $80 and $85 respectively, let’s hope you have some wealthy and dedicated friends. So who’s in: Halo laser tag, Center City, 3 a.m., late March?

Paper Toys: Cheapest Way To Pimp Your Cube

 papertoy_marshallalexander.jpg

Here in Philly, we like to make things.  It is also universally known that toys are cool.  Therefore, making toys is totally awesome.  I wrote about speakerdog paper toys in my old blog — but since then, there have been a whole slew of really awesome, customizable, and 90% free paper toy designs.

Have some time to kill at lunch?  Want to build an army of monsters on your desk, but don’t want to be seen shopping in Toys R Us with a cart? This IS your ticket!  Outlaw Design Blog details all sorts of fun paper toy websites.

I really want to get more featured Cubesday stuffs, so I figured this sort of thing would get you g33ks going!

MakePhilly Idea: Battle Beetles!

MakePhilly Idea: Battle Beatles!

So I missed MakePhilly this weekend due to school. Again. Ugh.

In an attempt to make up for this, here’s another fun idea! If making Bristlebots is too taxing, perhaps some pre-made battling robots would be best for you. These RC Beetle robots from Sega duke it out hardcore, the remote giving you full control of the beetle’s movement, including the front appendages.

In between battles, you can use the training target to keep your little bugger in peak shape. Check out the toys over at Brando, complete with a cool flash video of two fighting.

GeekArt: Beowulf in Legos, Probably Better Than The Movie

Beowulf in Legos: Probably Better Then The Movie

Out of all the awful movies that came out this year that you couldn’t see at The Ritz, Beowulf is probably number one, though I’m sure many geeks swarmed to the theater to scope out some CGI rendered Angelina Jolie boobage.

What’s better than fake Angelina Jolie boobs? How about some awesome Lego reenactments of classic scenes in Beowulf? Check them out, they’re amazing.
