Geek Artifacts: Unboxing 8 Inch Floppy Disks Discovered In My Cubicle

Geek Artifacts: Unboxing 8 Inch Floppy Disks Discovered In My Cubicle

A few months ago, my desk was moved, a la Office Space, into the back corner of my company’s office. I didn’t mind. I had some good neighbors, a movie fan and a celebrity internet chef, to keep me company.

This week, I went digging around in the former resident’s desk, and discovered this large box of ancient 8 inch floppy disks. Now, many tech blogs receive the awesome opportunity to un-box gorgeous products. iPhones, the Macbook Air, personal digital assistants, video cameras, and so forth.

Since no one tosses any free products the way of the Geekadelph, we’re doing an un-boxing of an 8 inch floppy disk box. Cause really, who has ever done that? No one, that’s who.

Thank God these things are Wang compatible.

Behold the entire un-boxing after the jump. Special thanks to John Freeborn for leaving these in my desk.

Hulk Smash: Gorgeous Custom Painted Nintendo Wii

Hulk Smash: Gorgeous Custom Painted Nintendo Wii

Wow. Take a look at this beautiful, one-of-a-kind Nintendo Wii, done up with an Incredible Hulk theme. Hand-painted, this awesome console took over 100 hours to customize. I absolutely adore custom painted consoles, and this one is a treat. The auction even comes with the Incredible Hulk Wii game, which, if you win the auction, you can totally re-list on eBay. Because man, that game is terrible.

10% of the final sale price will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which is nice. There seems to be a trend with custom done video game consoles and charities. I like that.

And the answer is yes, I did put a bid down on the item. I was winning for about 5 minutes, and now, I’m losing again. Bah.

Check out some more photos of the Wii on the official listing.

Thanks for the link, Angel!

Australia to Philadelphia on Google Maps. Awesome!

Just takes a little bit of kayaking. When you arrive, be sure to look for the urban cowboys.

Thanks for the tip Mike!

Great Moments In History: Documenting What Really Matters… On An Etch-A-Sketch

Great Moments In History: Documenting What Really Matters… On An Etch-A-Sketch

Recently, I had the privilege of bumping into Alli Katz, a writer / artist living here in Philadelphia. Now, not only does Alli have one of the coolest names ever, but she happens to have one of the most unique hobbies I’ve seen in a long time. She recreates great moments in human history… on her Etch-A-Sketch.

When I asked her what got her started creating these mini Etch-A-Sketch masterpieces, she said she began drawing on her ‘sketch mostly due to boredom during her high school French class. Sounds a lot like why Tim and I started this blog. Only replace high school French class with our jobs (just kidding, don’t fire us).

The history aspect of her pictures was a sudden inspiration, since she happens to be quite the history buff. And it shows, as she’s sketched everything from the moon landing, to Krakatoa, to Rasputin (which immediately made me want to watch Hellboy). Not only are her images fantastic, but she gives them brilliantly witty captions.

The Titanic was boastful idolatry and God punished it with an iceberg and the rest of humanity with a terrible movie.

Her archives date back to May, so her site is fairly new. Keep an eye on her blog, I can see this getting incredibly popular.

Oh, and Alli is working on a historical moment for us right now. You better believe we’ll be posting that.

Gameboy Foot Controller: Joey Mariano, Chiptune’s Guitar Hero

animal_style_foot_pedal.jpg

Joey Mariano, a local Philly Chiptune artist better known as Animal Style, created this glorious Gameboy Color Foot Controller, on which he has managed to create some amazing eight bit madrigals. Check out some additional photos of his gear here.

Using the power of the Gameboy sound chip, Mariano’s madrigals blend the body of early role playing and puzzle video games with awesome, powerful electro-dance beats. Since the Gameboy only has three melodic monophonic channels to create melodies to begin with, this helped Mariano stay true to the traditional madrigal form of 2 to 3 voices.

Here’s a video of him in action.

You can download his EP, full of these songs, for free via his net label’s website. Titles of the songs include Gather ‘Round Retrograde, Tokyo Cornfield in Antigravity, and more. If you enjoy the Madrigals, which you will, you can donate some funds to support his music.

For his next release, he’ll be releasing the music on his own Nintendo Cartridge playable via the original NES system, with help from his pals Alex Mauer and No-Carrier.

Check him out at his official website, www.animal-style.com, and add him as your pal on Myspace.

Filming of Dream of the Romans in Philadelphia: Exclusive Hollywood Quality Photo

Jeff Daniels! In Philadelphia!

My pal Jon, who lives up in Rittenhouse Square, caught this snapshot on the way to work, filming on 21st and Delancy. Apparently they were shooting a scene for the upcoming 2009 film, Dream of the Romans. Awesome!

Anyone else score a picture? Let us know!

Thanks Jon!

Mario Kart Wii Driving School: Coming To Philadelphia

Mario Kart Wii Driving School: Coming To Philadelphia

Ben, one of Geekadelphia’s many freelance bloggers, and by “many” I mean our only one, and by “freelance” I mean he gets paid in hugs, is probably the single most excited geek in Philadelphia right now. Mario Kart Wii, Driving School, is coming to Philadelphia, and he is anxiously awaiting his chance to pwn the hell out of you.

When the Mario Kart Driving School hits up Philly on Sunday, May 11th, you’ll get to test out Mario Kart at one of their stations AND get your own personalized license from the Wii DMV. Hah!

Hit up the official Mario Kart Wii website for more details. We’ll see you there, on South Street. Prepare to eat our dust.

Geekadelphia Bloggers Are Brown, Can’t Go To London

Geekadelphia Bloggers Are Brown, Can’t Go To London

You gotta love London’s campaign to battle terrorism, and how they are telling people to keep their eyes out for suspicious looking photographers or cell-phone users. The best thing about these posters, are the hilarious spoofs appearing all over the interweb.

This one has got to be my personal favorite.

Geekawaii? No That Doesn’t Work As Well..

The Map above shows the distance Eric has traveled on his first ever plane ride.  Yes it seems like he made it safe and sound because I noticed he did, in fact, update his Facebook profile status to “is in hawaii!!” followed by a thousand smiley faces.  BUT knowing how ridiculously often I post on here, he went ahead and drafted enough entries to keep you readers entertained for the week.

So officially, Eric is out of the office, but he’s still posting work.

Now the fate of  Geekadelphia rests in my hands.  Mwahahaha.
