20 Classic Hip Hop Albums: Now in Lego!

I’m not a fan of hip-hop. At all. But I AM a fan of Legos.

Format Magazine has an awesome gallery of twenty classic hip-hop albums, all redone in Lego. Some are certainly better then others. Whether you’re a lover of hip-hop or passionate about minifigs, this is definitely an excellent collection of images to check out. These guys even remade Philadelphia natives Jedi Mind Tricks’ album, Violent By Design. Neat!

I’m not sure if the term “classic” really applies here though. The Alkaholics? Really?

Thanks to Jay for the link, who had his likeness recaptured in Lego long ago.

Gene Simmons Guitar Hero Guitar

Whoa! I’m sure our resident Guitar Hero / Rock Band / Donkey Konga rhythm gamer fan Ben Gilbert will absolutely love this gem. Unfortunately, this gorgeous Axe Guitar is only available for the Playstation.

The Axe Guitar is wireless, has Gene Simmon’s autographed printed on the front, and has double sets of buttons so you can jam out all over the guitar.

We’ve got the specs after the jump. Ben, looks like you’re getting a PS3.

‘It’s All Happening!’ — MTV/Apple Corp. Team Up for Beatles Game

Though we were hearing reports from a certain prestigious financial newspaper yesterday, today’s conference call confirmed what’s been rumored for many moons: The Beatles are coming to a rhythm game near you — and sooner that you might think.

MTV Games/Harmonix (by way of MTV Networks president Van Toffler) have announced this morning that they’re working on creating, “a brand new video game featuring the music of the iconic Beatles.” We’d like to take this opportunity to stress “brand new video game” in that last sentence — this means not just a new Rock Band title made for The Beatles (a la AC/DC) but an entirely new property made specifically with The Beatles in mind. Apparently the title will explore the entire Beatles catalog and has a heavy emphasis on “visual imagery.” No release platforms have been announced yet but the press release let us know that they’re expecting to release “Holiday ’09″.

We here at Geekadelphia (minus Eric of course, who “doesn’t like rhythm games” and also has a cold, bitter heart) are reserving judgment on the yet-to-be-truly-detailed game until we find out some more detailed info. For the full press release, hit the jump!

Guitar Amp in a Toaster?

Not quite as cool as the Nintoaster, but still relatively bad-ass. Known as “The Hottie” these little toaster amplifiers actually work, fitted inside vintage, American toasters. They are available in an array of finishes, from the awesome flame one above to classic chrome.

The toasters will run you a solid $150. The custom model that we have pictured above goes for a $250. You can watch a video demonstrating the amp over on YouTube. Awesome.

Nercore Rising? Anyone? Anyone?

So y’all have heard of Tycho and Gabe, the creators of Penny Arcade, no? Fans of theirs may know about the burgeoning “nerdcore” scene — the self-described “sociological phenomenon born out of the internet and made possible by computer-obsessed geeks” — a scene in which players such as MC Chris (of Aqua Teen Hunger Force fame) and MC Frontalot wear geeky IT-men outfits and rap about topics ranging from “pr0n” to coding.

Well, a member of this scene and documentary filmmaker (as well as a friend of the Geek), Negin Farsad, went on tour with MC Frontalot as he crossed the United States, and now he’s got a whole freakin’ movie full of geeky ridiculousness we’re sure to <3. But he needs help! He’s bringing the movie around the nation, showing it wherever they’ll let him and we’re trying to help. Frontalot rolls into Philly on Dec. 3rd and we’re looking for a venue to show the film on or around the date. If you’ve got a college theater/auditorium, loft or big-ass open space and you want to help out, shoot us an e-mail!

Besides earning a special place in our hearts, you’ll also receive a mixed bag of E3 2008 schwag (including some sweet Fallout 3 stuff) as well as meeting the man himself. Hell, we might even buy you a ticket to the MC Frontalot show. In the meantime, check out the documentary’s website right here.

Weezer’s Green Album: Awesome CD, Questionable Bento

First we wrote about Star Wars bentos, and now we’ve got album covers! Weezer’s Green Album is made with cabbage, seaweed, ham, fish cakes, paprika, and rice. While the actual CD is one of my favorite discs from Weezer (Pinkerton being my favorite), this bento does not sound very delicious.

Pay a visit to this Japanese bento site, which also features album covers from Jason Mraz, Sigur Ros, and Dinosaur Jr. The whole site is in Japanese, so you’ll have to rely on the pictures.

Enjoy!

FOUND: 50 Cent’s Diamond-Encrusted Skull!

A little while ago here on Geek we posted a story about 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, the sequel to 50 Cent: Bulletproof (the million+ selling, and terrible, PS2/Xbox game). If you’ll allow us to drift back to that post a bit, we’ll recall the plot for said game:

“50 and G-Unit put on a sold out performance in the Middle East when suddenly… they don’t get paid. 50 isn’t leaving til he gets paid, so the promoter offers him one of the country’s priceless treasures… a diamond-encrusted skull. Just as 50 and his crew are about to leave the country, they are ambushed, the skull is stolen, and 50 runs through the Middle East in a shoot ‘em up game to reclaim his property.”

Well today is a monumentous day, friends: 50′s diamond-encrusted skull has been found. Does that mean we just saved the Middle East from “Fittydom”? Hit the break for the skinny on the (completely terrifying) skull you see above.

Kanye/Pharell Tapping Videogame Culture

If you were looking for a surefire way to kickoff your weekend, how about firing up this brand-spanking new Kanye West/N.E.R.D. video above, all set to the backdrop of an ’80s videogame montage? Space Invaders plays a predominant role as well as a crazy version of Galaga from time-to-time, all with Kanye, Pharell and (our favorite) Pusha T rapping in the forefront. Oh, and unless your boss is into gettin’ down on a Friday afternoon, we’re labeling this one NSFW (on the boogeydown principal alone). Enjoy your weekend, and be sure to check out Geekadelphia’s new webcomic!

Don’t Stop Believing in Journey’s MP3 Player

Don’t Stop Believing in Journey’s MP3 Player

If you head on over to Wal-Mart, you can pre-order the 1GB Journey MP3 Player, which comes packed full of Journey goodness, 22 songs in total. 11 of those songs are from their new album, Revelation (which features their 2nd new lead singer) and 11 classic songs, re-recorded. Check out the full track listing on Wal-Mart’s webstore.

Here’s hoping for a Whitesnake MP3 Player in the near future. Oh! Or a Starship one! No… no, I need to stop teasing myself with such wonderful thoughts.

Custom Guitar Hero Sax Controller: Saxophone Hero!

Custom Guitar Hero Sax Controller: Saxophone Hero!

Ah, video game controller mods, how we love you. This custom made guitar hero controller shaped like a saxophone holds a special place in Geekadelphia’s heart, since two of the three writers have played in ska bands in our youth, and love the saxophone. Pick it up pick it up. Hep hep!

This custom built controller sits inside a gutted and painted saxophone toy, and inside, sits a PS2 controller. The auction endded at $10. I thought it would have gone for more.

Sleeveface: Amazing Activity For Vinyl Collectors

Sleeveface: Amazing Activity For Vinyl Collectors

What is Sleevefacing? Their blog defines it as one or more persons obscuring or augmenting any part of their body or bodies with record sleeve(s) causing an illusion. Jeff over at Used Wigs provided the link to this, and I’ve gotta say, it’s absolutely hysterical.

The images range from the humorous to the extremely creative.

Sleeveface: Amazing Activity For Vinyl Collectors

Here’s one of my favorite pieces.

Anyhow, I think I’ll be taking a trip to the Book Trader in Old City sometime this week, where they sell used vinyls for a dollar a piece upstairs. Could make for some fun sleevefacing. Jeff, you in?
