Weekly Kickstarter: Lexi Malmros’ Beer Cakes Philly

Hey geeks! You like Philadelphia, right? Sure you do. And beer? Yeah, thought so. How about cupcakes? Uh huh. Well have I got a deal for you. Take a look…

Beer Cakes is the result of a girl who loves cake, loves beer, and loves going to breweries with her Dad…  After a couple fresh pints and some good pub food, I always wanted something sweet and was disappointed at the lack of dessert on the menu.  So I began to develop some recipes.  What I came up with was a way to make cake that tastes like beer!

Using the amazing craft brews that Philadelphia has to offer, I put beer in both my cake and my buttercream.  What makes every craft beer unique is the flavors and spices that are used to brew them.  I play with those same ingredients in my recipes to bring out the beer’s flavor. The result is an amazing dessert that has savory and sweet notes that will tickle your taste buds.

While you can check my website (www.beercakesphilly.com) to see a list of the flavors that I’ve created so far, there are so many more awesome Philly beers that are just waiting for me.

Right now Beer Cakes Philly is only a wholesale or special order business, and though it’s going very well, I want to bring my cakes to the masses. I want everyone in Philly to have the chance to stop in for a beer cake!

My bakery won’t look at all the way you would expect a bakery to look.  You will most likely walk in and think you’ve entered a dive bar.  My cakes are about the beer, and the shop should be too.

I see local art on the wall, eclectic decorations, wooden tables that you can carve your name into, old tin signs, white christmas lights… can you picture it?

I imagine my Beer Cakes Philly storefront everyday, and with your help I’ll be able to wake up every morning and actually live the dream.

We’ve all had sweets made with beer before, but made to actually taste like the beer itself (and its special ingredients)? That’s new. And she’ll be open late, so when you’re leaving the next Geekadelphia / Tatooed Mom’s Halloween Extravaganza, you’ll have somewhere to go! Pony up.

The Project: Beer Cakes Philly

Creator: Lexi Malmros

The Sweet Spot: A measly $25 gets you six pack of cupcakes from the shop. Way better than any actual sixer you could pick up for that price. Know a real hophead? Drop $100 and you can get a novelty cake or two dozen of the little guys.

Funding Deadline: June 16th, 2012

Weekly Kickstarter: Max Thrust by Brendan McGeehan & Dom Hilton

Aliens, superheroes, and one heck of a double entendre. This week’s Kickstarter is from two veteran short filmmakers and is packed full of geek staples. Here’s the scoop:

You live with a guy, you love the same goofy sci-fi, you love the guy. But he calls you dude. This is a situation Hal wishes would change with her housemate Olly, a locksmith and wannabe superhero who only has eyes for an extraterrestrial hottie. When Olly has a close encounter with the being of his dreams, things turn very ugly. Sometimes you have to cross the final frontier to find love on your home planet.

Here are some of the reasons we need your help:

Costumes and props: We’ll need to make everyone believe that these superheroes actually existed.  Therefore, we must have custom made unitards, patches, posters, life size cutouts, etc.  These things cost money.

Festival submissions: We could make a brilliant little film, but is a film any good if no one is around to see it (please pardon the “getting all zen/tree falling in the forest moment”)?  Anyway, we will need funds to submit this film to several festivals, starting with the Philadelphia Film Festival this fall (holy alliteration, Max Thrust!).

Meals, transportation, etc.: We all do this for the love of it, but in order to sustain basic life, we see the need to actually feed our cast and crew.  The film will take a few days to shoot, and we must provide proper sustenance so that our actors don’t turn into divas and walk out on set.

Not quite sure what you’re getting yourself into? You can take a look at the last film the guys made, Trouble’s A’Brewin, before you jump in.

The Project: Max Thrust

Creator: Brendan McGeehan and Dom Hilton

The Sweet Spot: $25 gets you into the credits in the “special thanks” section, but for real film buffs (or comics lovers) $100 will get you in the credits, an invite to a private screening of the film here in Philly, and your likeness in a custom comic poster of Max Thrust and Xenon. You’ll even be pictured saving the day. NBD.

Funding Deadline: June 7th, 2012

More Info: The Kickstarter project page has a handy FAQ section, and you can see the duo’s previous film right here. Brendan’s personal page has more.

Weekly Kickstarter: Southern Rising, An Undead Civil War RPG

It’s been a little while since we talked tabletop games here in the weekly Kickstarter spotlight, but today we’ve got a real doozy. Civil War? Check. Alternate history? Check. Modern day undead uprising? Check, check, and check. Let’s talk Southern Rising.

“Monsters are real. They have always been real. Grant understood that when he ordered Vicksburg quarantined to prevent the plague from leaving the city, Sherman understood that while laying waste to the land, consecrating the dead so they remained dead, and my great grandfather understood that when he put a bullet in the brain of that abomination.” – Jake Booth, descendant of John Wilkes Booth.

Southern Rising is a roleplaying game in which players take on the roles of average citizens (businessmen, school teachers, public servants, police officers, and/or soldiers) trying to stop the rising of the confederacy by any means necessary.

Set in 2011 the game allows modern player characters to take on undead soldiers of the Confederacy, making this a mash-up of genres. It is a skill-based table-top RPG which begs the question, “What if the South did rise again – as UNDEAD!

But wait there’s more – Southern Rising is not the typical skill-based role playing game. it has a unique twist. It is three games in one!

To top it all off, previous Geek of the Week and composer extraordinaire Matt Campana is involved, and will be contributing an original soundtrack if a certain over-funding threshold is reached. C’mon… we all know you’re gonna go see Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter next month. This is just the next logical step.

The Project: Southern Rising RPG

Creator: Ronald Corn

The Sweet Spot: You can get on on the ground floor with a physical copy of the Southern Rising RPG and an additional PDF rulebook for $30. Really digging this idea and have a few open spots in your weekly game? For $200 you’ll get a couple signed copies of the game and the creators will even play a full game with your group via Skype! Authentic Civil War era attire optional, but strongly encouraged (by Geekadelphia).

Funding Deadline: June 19th, 2012

More Info: Check out the Kickstarter page, friend game designer (and history teacher!) Ronald Corn on Facebook, and read more about composer Matt Campana on his site.

Weekly Kickstarter: Moebius by Pinkerton Road Studio

Fans of ‘90s point and click adventure games are no doubt familiar with the Gabriel Knight series, but did you know that the series’ creator lives here in PA? True facts. Right out in Lancaster County. On a farm. That may or may not have some serious occult business going on. Watch the video, you’ll see what I mean.

Anyway, the farm is now home base for Pinkerton Road Studio, Jensen and composer/husband Robert Holmes’ new outfit exploring the idea of CSG, or community supported gaming. Like a CSA, but for video games! And the first game will be… Moebius:

Malachi Rector is an antiquities dealer who hunts down artifacts all over the world. After his upscale Manhattan store is destroyed in a fire, he’s hired by billionaire Amble Dexter to investigate a series of events and document them in his meticulous way.

The first event is the death of a young woman in Venice. She was found hanging from a bridge. As Rector investigates her life, compiling facts for his dossier, he realizes that the beautiful and talented young woman — and the interrupted path of her life — had great hidden significance.

It appears that Amble Dexter and his associates are playing with the fabric of life in a way Rector never imagined was possible. Even he, Rector himself, is part of a larger pattern. He must figure out who is doing what, and whether their intentions are for good or ill, before he can decide if he will play his pre-scripted role — or try to change the outcome. This is a metaphysical thriller ala Dante’s Equation and Gabriel Knight.

Want more? Watch the video and take a look at the video updates that the team is putting up. And go support them!

The Project: Jane Jensen’s Moebius and Pinkerton Rd. Studio

Creator: Jane Jensen

The Sweet Spot: $16 gets you one game this CSG cycle, which means Moebius! You’ll also get quarterly updates and access to a special member’s only forum. If you really want to get in there though, $50 makes you a full blown CSG member with monthly updates, beta access, PDF design bibles, and the ability to give your own input on the game. The decision is clear.

Funding Deadline: May 19th, 2012

More Info: Find Jane on Facebook, the official Pinkerton Road site, and of course right over on Kickstarter.

Weekly Kickstarter: Ace Kilroy Webcomic Goes Print

If you’re a regular reader of our fair site, you’re no doubt familiar with Ace Kilroy, the daily webcomic from local creators Rob Kelly and Dave O’Connor. Our own David Goodman has spotlighted the strip before, and Rob has even been Geek of the Week. If you haven’t had a chance to bask in the pulpy, throwback awesomeness that is Ace Kilroy then, well, I feel very sorry for you. But I’m not here just to judge, I also have the perfect solution!

Ace is on vacation, having just returned from making sure the Third Reich doesn’t collude with Dracula to bring down the Allies, and is gearing up for his next adventure. In the meantime, Rob and Dave have put together a Kickstarter to collect the entire first arc into a print collection so you can get all caught up just in time for his next adventure. Here’s Rob with the details:

Since it’s debut, AceKilroy.com has featured a new black and white installment every day, six days a week, with an extra-large color supplement on Sundays. On April 15, 2012, the story of Ace’s first mission was completed, and now he is taking a well-deserved vacation–in preparation for his next dangerous assignment!

Ace Kilroy is the creation of writer/artists Rob Kelly and Dan O’Connor (that’s us!). With each having over twenty years experience in the worlds of illustration and comic books, Rob and Dan came together to produce a comic strip that harkens back to the classic American newspaper strips of the mid-20th Century, like Steve Canyon, Dick Tracy, and Secret Agent X-9.

In just the first few months since its debut, Ace Kilroy was nominated for an Eagle Award, the comics industry’s longest-running awards panel, for Favorite Web-Based Comic. It also received favorable reviews from a wide variety of critics and genre fans
In anticipation of Ace’s next mission kicking off on Independence Day, July 4th, we are now offering the first Ace Kilroy print collection, in both standard and oversized “treasury” formats, featuring the complete first story arc (October 31, 2011-April 15, 2012) plus bonus behind-the-scenes material!

In addition to the print collection, you can pledge to receive additional rewards: membership in the fan club “Ace’s Allies”, original strip art, and a one-of-a-kind Ace Kilroy sketch book, featuring original pencil and ink concept art by Dan O’Connor!

The guys have a pretty modest goal of only $2,000, and the strip has gotten some great press. If you want to get in on the action now’s the time!

The Project: Ace Kilroy Volume 1

Creator: Rob Kelly and Dave O’Connor

The Sweet Spot: Every dollar counts, and for only $10 you can get into Ace’s Allies, the Ace Kilroy fanclub that gives you access to all kinds of neat premiums, from coasters, to stickers and more. $40 gets you membership AND a signed version of the TPB in standard comic, and $75 gets you the signed copy in a sweet oversized treasury edition.

Funding Deadline: May 16th, 2012

More Info: Kickstarter, of course, but you should hit up the Ace Kilroy site to get all caught up. You can also find out more info on Rob at his site.

Weekly Kickstarter: The Switched-On Garden

Geeks and the outdoors have long considered to mix like oil and water. That is to say, our pasty skin and sometimes questionable physical conditioning often means that we find ourselves enjoying the wonders of the great indoors more often than those of mother nature.

This week’s Kickstarter, The Switched-On Garden, aims to change all that. In fact, this is the team at Data Garden’s second go-round on this particular project. Last year’s event at Bartram’s Garden was a smashing success, with over 700 people attending to check out the unique blend of technology and nature. This year’s event is sure to be even more awesome:

Data Garden seeks to engage people to explore the relationship between plants music and technology with an outdoor arts festival, The Switched-On Garden on October 14, 2012. Attendees will connect with their natural environment through live music, performance and sculpture that blurs the distinction between biological and digital worlds. Site-specific art installations will be highly interactive and educational.

The first Switched-On Garden took place on 10/16/2011 at Philadelphia’s Bartram’s Garden and was attended by over 700 people of all ages and backgrounds. Your investment will help us make this event possible, attract leading international artists, expand public interaction with urban green space and keep the event free and open to the public.

We understand that not everyone who supports this event will be able to attend. With that in mind, we’re offering special edition memorabilia and audio documentation that will allow you to be part of The Switched-On Garden wherever you are in the world.

That special edition memorabilia they mention? Some of you may end up with a sweet plantable album. I’m not really sure how that works, but it sounds awesome.

The Project: The Switched-On Garden 002

Creator: Data Garden

The Sweet Spot: $10 gets you the plantable album of sounds and performances from the event, $50 nets you a limited edition poster and t-shirt to go with it. Big spenders can get the VIP treatment and special access at higher donation levels.

Funding Deadline: April 24th, 2012

More Info: Check out the main Kickstarter page, Data Garden’s website, and their social channels for details and updates.

A Q&A with Philly Writer/Artist M. Alice LeGrow

The Elephant Book, LeGrow’s latest project

If you read any manga at all during the boom years of the medium then you have no doubt heard of M. Alice LeGrow. A writer and artist living in Philadelphia, in 2003 she came in second in Tokyopop’s Rising Stars of Manga competition and then when on to create Bizenghast, one of manga’s biggest hits of 2004.

She published the eighth and final volume of that series in 2011 and now she has begun work on her next project, The Elephant Book, which she is funding through Kickstarter. M. Alice was nice enough to agree to an email interview about the new book, what a professional birthday princess is and why she loves Philly so much.

Tell everyone a little about yourself. Have you lived in Philly a long time?

I’ve lived in Philadelphia since just after I finished college in 2003. I moved down here to be closer to my friends in the city, and I really love it here. Philadelphia is my favorite city in the world, which is why I set my new comic series in it! I feel like Philly should get more representation in comics, because it’s often overlooked as a setting, in favor of the usual New York/Los Angeles locations.

Most fans know you from your successful world manga series Bizenghast. What was it like to finish the series in 2011?

It was very rewarding to know that seven years of work was finally wrapping up and all the plotlines would be resolved, but it was also a little sad. I’ve spent the better part of a decade on that one storyline and it was tough to know that I wouldn’t be working with those characters anymore. It’s like finishing up shooting for a movie and having to say goodbye to a great cast of actors that you’ve come to know.

With Tokyopop going under, what’s the status of the series? Will you ever be able to get it back in print?

I’m not sure about that… I’ve been talking with Stu Levy, the owner of Tokyopop, and he’s considering digital releases for some currently owned titles, including Bizenghast. I’m excited to see what may come of that! Book eight, the final volume, is also finally being printed up on-demand and will be available online this month, and I’m very happy about that. (more…)

Weekly Kickstarter: Super Fun Time by Spiffy Games

We all love playing games, but sometimes you just don’t have time for a four hour raid or 10 minutes to spare for a deathmatch. That’s why all these asynchronous mobile games work so well.

But before we had Words With Friends, Draw Something, and Hero Academy (Username: RPerdue. Come at me, bro), there were bite-sized micro game collections. Warioware, Raving Rabbids, etc. Isn’t it about time we had another great collection that you can drop a few minutes (or seconds) in to at a moment’s notice?

Sean Allison and his team at Spiffy Games certainly think so.

Spiffy Games is a team of 3: Abhishek Chaudhry, Goran Popovic and Sean Allison. We are currently developing Super Fun Time, a crazy indie game for the iOS and Android platforms. We’re at a point where we can show some of the game so make sure you check out the video above.

Since it will be you guys playing our game, we want you to participate in shaping it. This means that if we reach our goal, we’ll be showcasing the game pre-release to the backers, as well as providing betas and other exclusives. We’re always looking for feedback.

The premise of SFT is that five evil baddies have taken the fun out of the world, and it’s your job to bring it back. If you had to sum it up in just one sentence, Super Fun Time is a frantic, fast-paced, microgame collection.

To be frank, we’re perfectly aware of the fact that this type of has often been relegated to the bargain bin over the last few years. Super Fun Time is an homage to the classics of the genre, and we’re looking to advance it. You’ll have to stay on your toes because you’ll be tasked with a new game every handful of seconds.

The game will feature an enormous variety of microgames and tonnes of collectibles. With specific challenges and difficulties designed for all skill levels, we want to make sure that everyone can enjoy themselves. This means that Super Fun Time will feature a variety of difficulties that cater to everyone from the casual player to those seeking the most brutal of challenges.

We’re looking at least 100+ games, five boss characters with unique battles and everything will be playable on every possible difficulty. Here is a basic breakdown of the features.

Philly game developers are getting some great national attention these days. Let’s keep up the support and continue to put our fair city on the map as a hub for talented game creators.

The Project: Super Fun Time

Creator: Sean Allison

The Sweet Spot: You can get in on the ground floor of this thing for only $5, which will net you a sweet poster and the full game when it’s released. $20 will get you all that and some other great swag, including the full original soundtrack. All backers will be listed in the game credits, regardless of fund level!

Funding Deadline: June 2nd, 2012

More Info: Check out Sean’s website and find him on Facebook. Of course, you can always hit the main Kickstarter page.

Weekly Kickstarter: OCD/C Mockumentary

You’ve probably heard of AC/DC. Back in Black, Dirty Deeds. You know, those guys. But what about OCD/C? They’re kind of the same thing, except that they’ve only had one song in the last twenty years. But it’s perfect, you guys. And now, they’re getting their own mockumentary.

Ben Mills and Mike Robinson have written a hilarious mockumentary film about a band called OCD/C. This band’s been together for twenty years, they only have ONE song… but it’s perfect. The perfect song.

The film tells the story of the band entering its’ twentieth year together. It documents their complete and total tweeking out about the most minor details of the COMPLETION of their ONLY song. The film crew visits and interviews them at their studio/rehearsal space, as well as, follows them after they get some major news.

Mills and Robinson are about to “give birth” to this film but need your financial support. Kickstarter is an all or nothing approach to fund raising: you donate whatever you can to our project and if we meet 100% of our goal then this story “comes to life”. If we don’t meet our goal of $5000, then we get nothing, your money goes back to you, and we film this story on my iPhone and it looks like sh..

Your contribution will help us cover production and equipment rental costs. Your support will be rewarded in several ways from OCD/C t-shirts, to producer credits on the film, to the two of us spotlessly cleaning your home (OCD style) when you handsomely contribute to our project.

We are passionate about music, comedy, and film and have been creating performance-based art for many years. Please help us and our highly talented film crew and cast deliver this “baby” into the realm of….manifestation.

A segment of OCD/C’s only song can be heard at the end of the video. Lyrics:

Every single thing in this world has a place to call its own, I feel it just might be my calling to put these things in their place, My obsessions keep me stalling, A dusty shelf is just appalling, And can you say you’d rather have it good than get it right?

Two things, everyone. First, the last 20 seconds or so of their video is probably the funniest thing you’ll see this week. Second, They’ll clean your house for you. Win. The film (and fake band) is made by a who’s who of local comedy talent – show ‘em some love.

The Project: OCD/C Mockumentary

Creator: Mike Robinson and Ben Mills

The Sweet Spot: $25 gets you some social media love and a sweet digital behind-the-scenes booklet, but $300 gets you all of that, early access to the film, an invitation to a live performance, a download of the song, and some sweet OCD-style cleaning action.

Funding Deadline: April 18th, 2012

Weekly Kickstarter: The Honey Helpers

The Honey Helpers. A crack team of globe-trotting superheroes who fight crime using their sharp wits and even sharper stingers. Buzzing around from city to city, striking fear into the hearts of evildoers with their signature yellow and black uniforms and telltale buzz while delivering delicious, delicious honey to citizens everywhere…

Wait, no. That’s not right at all. I’ll let Liz Biagioli explain:

The Honey Helpers are a group of elementary students at Wissahickon Charter School that will become beekeepers. They will work with a local beekeeper and school staff to learn about bee biology, hive design, honeybee foraging habits, and honeybee genetics. Each student will be responsible for the care of their own hive with the help of an adult. As honey production begins, students will participate in the harvesting and bottling of the honey. One goal for the club is to eventually sell the honey, wax candles, queens, bees and nucs. The profits to reinvest in the club to make the program financially sustainable. We are presently in need of monies for the initial start-up expenses.

Wissahickon Charter School is an environmentally focused kindergarten through eighth grade school that has students from over 30 zip codes in Philadelphia. There are 426 students at the school, 74% of the students at Wissahickon Charter School receive free school lunch.

This project will also help the declining pollinator population. Bees have been in serious decline for the past few years. By placing these hives in a city we are going to significantly increase the bee population. The project will also help prepare future beekeepers to care for bees and the environment.

These bees will be kept in an all natural way, no pesticides or insecticides! The students will learn from the beginning that pesticides are not the way to go. Having healthy strong bees will help the students and the environments.

Ok, so they actually kind of are like superheroes. The young students of the Honey Helpers have an opportunity to not just learn about bees, but actually help preserve the local population and create a unique learning environment for the students of Wissahickon Charter School. And c’mon, it’s beekeeping. That’s some geeky stuff.

The Project: The Honey Helpers

Creator: Liz Biagioli

The Sweet Spot: The overall goal for the project is only $2,279, and every little bit helps. For only $15 you can support the program and get the warm fuzzy feeling that only handwritten thank-you cards from young students can provide. Looking for a sweet (see what I did there?!) way to spend an afternoon? $100 will get you a tour of the actual bee apiary with a licensed beekeeper.

Funding Deadline: April 18th, 2012

More Info: See the main Kickstarter page or read up on Wissahickon charter school on their site.

Zenescope Entertainment Launches Kickstarter for Grimm Fairy Tales Animated Series

Grimm Fairy Tales, the flagship series from Horsham-based Zenescope entertainment, has been a runaway success since its start in 2005. Our own David Goodman has had plenty of nice things to say about the comics over the years.

But what if instead of just comics we could have an animated series that dug deeper in to Joe Brusha and Ralph Tadesco’s dark take on the brothers’ classic stories? What if that series was animated by the dudes who do pretty much all the good shows on Adult Swim. That’d be awesome, right? Right. Time to warm up those wallets again, geeks. Here’s the pitch, straight from Brusha:

We believe that our Grimm Fairy Tales comic book series would make an excellent animated series, and we’ve been pitching the idea to the Hollywood big-wigs for years. They’ve said “There is too much Fairy Tales stuff out there”, or “No one wants to see a gritty, dark, modern take on the fairy tales.” That’s where they’re wrong. We have tons of devoted fans that would love to see more of our series, and that is our chance and yours to make it happen.

Grimm Fairy Tales has been the flagship series of Zenescope Entertainment since the company started. Zenescope has grown to a top comic book publisher due to its continued success. Grimm Fairy Tales is currently the longest running independent color comic being published today and has over 1 million copies in print.

Jon Schnepp will be directing this project. He is one of the hottest animation directors in Hollywood, having already seen a great deal of success working on such series as Aqua Teen Hunger Force , Metalocalypse, and the Venture Brothers. Not only will Jon be working closely with the creators of the comic book, Joe Brusha and Ralph Tedesco; Zenescope will be enlisting Titmouse Inc, one of the premiere animation studios, to help with this vision.

Titmouse Inc is a premiere animation studio with top-tier talent and experience. Jon Schnepp has worked with them before on many of his projects, and much of their work rounds out the Adult Swim animation block on Cartoon Network. Their variety of experience is suited well for the Grimm Fairy Tales animation series anthology.

We also want to include you, the fan, in the process as much as possible. Bringing this project to life is going to be hard, and we want you to get to see behind the curtain. That’s why we’re going to be shooting a lot of exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage to include with the series so that you really get to see how we made it all happen.

The Kickstarter project was just announced at Wondercon – jump in now before the limited rewards all get snapped up. Local comic creators, an great director, and some serious animation muscle. This is gonna be awesome.

The Project: Grimm Fairy Tales Animated Series

Creator: Joe Brusha, Zenescope Entertainment

The Sweet Spot: At $25 the core rewards pack gets you a digital copy of the animates series along with behind the scenes footage, as well as a digital version of the first trade paper back, a special backer keychain, and a special wallpaper. For the true fans out there, $99 will get you all that swag and a signed hard copy of a Kickstarter exclusive printing of the TPB, a signed DVD of the animated series, and a limited edition trading card.

Funding Deadline: May 1st, 2011

More Info: There’s a ton more info on the Kickstarter page.

Weekly Kickstarter: Pizza Brain, The World’s First Pizza Museum

Geeks love pizza. I mean, think about it. When you’re in the middle of hour number four of your raid and you need something to keep you going, what do you usually eat? What about when you’ve got everyone over for the annual run through all six Star Wars movies and you’ve got a crowd to feed? What always made you feel better after that dude in a giant rat suit at Chuck E. Cheez freaked you out?

For those of you that are still with us, imagine if there were a museum dedicated solely to the majesty of pizza. Go ahead, think about it. How cool would that be? How much more cool would it be if said museum also served as a fully functional and delicious pizza restaurant? Indeed. Today is your lucky day, my friends:

Behold. The world’s first pizza museum. And they want it to be here in Philadelphia.

Yes, it’s true. There’s a museum out there dedicated to french fries, kiwis, chocolate, Pez dispensers, even burnt food – and yet, no one has ever  thought to curate a museum honoring what is arguably the most celebrated food on the planet.

That is, until now.

Pizza Brain is a 1,000 piece (and growing) collection of pizza memorabilia curated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In May 2011, Guinness Book of records certified the Pizza Brain archive to be ‘the largest collection of pizza-related items’ in the world. After a substantial amount of planning, we’re taking the next logical step: building the world’s first pizza museum & restaurant.

For the past year, we’ve been tirelessly working to get this vision off the ground. Currently we’re busy renovating a building in Fishtown, the epicenter of Philadelphia’s burgeoning art community.

“And it’s going to be a pizzeria, too?”

Totally! By spring, this revitalized 19th century storefront will be the new and permanent home to our collection, as well as unique restaurant that serves delicious artisan pizza, salads and sandwiches.

“Ok, I get it. But whattayaneed my help for?”

Well, we’re looking for money to fully build out and furnish our museum space (things like custom-built display cases, cabinets, electronic monitors, and lighting/security systems to name a few)  – as well as  develop an electronically accessible archive of pizza-related artifacts. During 2011, many articles were written about our concept (appearing in City Paper, Metro, Zagat, Slice, and even Quantas Airlines). This December, our brand developer Brian ‘Brain’ Dwyer earned the prestigious title of Philebrity’s ‘Phoodie of the Year’ for his pizza enthusiasm. We’ve brought people together around an idea whose time has come. Now we need your help to bring our space to life.

What are you waiting for?

The Project: Pizza Brain, the Worlds First Pizza Museum & Restaurant

Creator: Brian “Brain” Dwyer

The Sweet Spot: $25 gets you a group hug (or emoticon-filled email) and a belly full of pizza for you and a guest when Pizza Brain opens. For $100 you’ll get a  three-day pizza extravaganza, a genuine 19th century artifact taken from the walls of the old building in Fishtown, some sweet custom art, and um… a locket containing the actual hair of all four owners. Seriously.

Funding Deadline: April 1st, 2012

More Info: Find out more on the main Kickstarter page, hit up Brian’s Facebook, or follow any of the links in the post above.
