The Captain Jack Sparrow Handbook [Impressions & Giveaway]

Guest Post by Sarah Solomon

But seriously, where has all the rum gone?

Swashbucklers unite! The Captain Jack Sparrow Handbook is the swarthy sailors guide to a life of debauchery on the high seas and beyond.

Whether you need a lesson on How To Cheat Death ranging from How To Fight A Tavern Full of Angry Men or The Legend of the Fountain of Youth you’ll be entertained from start to finish.

Author Jason Heller leaves no stone- or rum barrel unturned as he covers every topic imaginable from pirate fashion to ship parts. Delightful illustrations and Pirates Of The Caribbean movie stills are throughout the book, and no fan will be left disappointed.

Whether you want to learn the ways of a pirate or just have a thing for Johnny Depp (It’s okay, the first step is always admitting it) then I wholeheartedly suggest The Captain Jack Sparrow Handbook, yet another delightful read from Quirk Books.

Interested in a copy? I’ve got one to giveaway to a lucky reader. Just leave a comment about your favorite movie pirate, and I’ll pick one of you at random sometime next week. Good luck!

Belkin’s Conserve Socket [Review & Giveaway]

The Conserve Socket is a part of Belkin’s eco-friendly product line aimed to reduce energy consumption. How? Well with an easy to set timer, it completely shuts off whatever device is plugged into it once the preset time expires. This durable product can be used throughout the house for multiple devices.

In my experience with the product, which Belkin was kind enough to send over, I’ve found it to be ideal for cell phone chargers, most consumer electronics, space heaters, coffee makers and irons. Clearly labeled buttons, simple packaging and reasonable pricing make it a no brainer for your average technophile.

Geeks on Film: SUPER [Review and Contest!]

SUPER. This is the film Kick Ass wished it was, plain and simple. I’ve been looking forward to this film for quite some time now. The film delivered on the hype of being fantastic and absolutely crazy. You must give this great independent film a chance.

Before you assume anything, this film isn’t cashing in on the whole “real superhero” trend that seems to be taking over our cineplexes. SUPER is a project over 9 years old and is nothing like the films that came before it.

SUPER is the story of Frank (Rainn Wilson) a sad lump of a man who works as a short order cook at a diner. One day Frank’s way too beautiful (Liv Tyler), recovering drug addict wife Sarah leaves him for the local crime kingpin played by Kevin Bacon. This really pushes the already troubled Frank over the edge… and he decides to become a superhero to take down the crime lord and get his wife back.

Win Passes to an Advance Screening of Your Highness

Your Highness (which hits theaters Friday, April 8th) is the new fantasy comedy starring the Oscar winning Natalie Portman, and the Oscar nominated James Franco in roles that were definitely shot before their Oscar nods.  The film is directed by David Gordon Green who you might know better as the director of Pineapple Express. The film looks to be a really fun and raunchy romp through the the middle-ages.

I first saw the trailer for this at the beginning of Paul and it definitely got my attention. The plot goes something like this: Thadeous (Danny McBride) is a lazy, arrogant prince who, with his brother Fabious (James Franco), must go on an epic quest in order to save their father’s kingdom. Add Natalie Portman as a warrior princess and Zooey Deschanel as Fabious’ bride how can you not want to see this?

We have 30 passes for a screening Tuesday April 5th at the Ritz Five. Wanna check it out? Simply comment with your favorite sword and sorcery film by April 3rd and the top entries will be checking out this film on Geekadelphia. In the meantime check out the trailer below.

Win Passes to an Advance Screening of Hanna

Hanna hits theaters Friday, April 8th and the film looks like a cross between Salt and The Professional. I hadn’t really heard anything about Hanna until I saw the trailer, but once I did, I had to see this film. The film is directed by Joe Wright best known for Pride and Prejudice and 2007′s Atonement.

If you’re not familiar with the plot of Hanna, it goes something like this:

Hanna (Saoirse Ronan) is a teenage girl with the strength, stamina, and smarts of a soldier; these come from being raised by her father (Eric Bana), an ex-CIA agent, in the wilds of Finland.

Her upbringing and training have been one and the same, all geared to making her the perfect assassin. The turning point in her adolescence is a sharp one; sent into the world by her father on a mission, Hanna journeys stealthily across Europe while eluding agents dispatched after her by a ruthless intelligence operative (Cate Blanchett).

As she nears her ultimate target, Hanna faces startling revelations about her existence and unexpected questions about her humanity.

Wanna check out an advance screening of Hanna Wednesday, March 30th at the Ritz at the Bourse? Simply comment with your favorite assassin film by Friday, March 25th and the top 20 will get passes to check the film out.  In the meantime check out the trailer below!
