Substitution Fail: World of Warcraft for Paws & Claws?

Hah! Really? Paws & Claws?

Oh well, at least they seem to have plenty of the boob shrinking Age of Conan MMORPG in stock.

Hai Terminator

So I’m sure you’ve been watching the Sara Conner Chronicles. No? Or maybe watched The Terminator. Never heard of it? OK, OK. How about the Matrix? No?? Geez, what are you doing on the internet?! Anyway, that isn’t the point.

I’m sure you’ve heard somewhere that machines will rise up, and take over. It’s 100% true. In 50 years when we are living in the rubble of post-apocolypse Philadelphia,  don’t you want some good stories to tell?  Some tales of the olden days when men were in control, and the robots were the slaves?

If so drop by Make:Philly on Sunday, and see Mark Yim talk about his robots that re-assemble themselves. The talk starts at 3PM on-the-nose, so get there a bit early.  His robots can be kicked apart, pulled apart, and spread across a room, and they still pull themselves back together, and continue on their way.  The Maker Challenge, where you build stuff on the spot to beat a crazy and weird challenge, starts at 4 PM.

If you don’t go and see Mark’s talk on re-assembling robots, those long nights around a burning tire in the rubble just won’t be as much fun.

Quest For Glory II: Back in Glorious VGA

I grew up on classic Sierra PC adventure games. King’s Quest, Police Quest, Space Quest… a whole wealth of different quest games. However the Quest for Glory series, the only Quest to start with the word quest, holds a special place in this geek’s heart. Quest For Glory: So You Want To Be A Hero, was the first game I ever purchased. It was the 1991 re-make of the original. I was 10, and it came in a gigantic box with several 3.5 inch diskettes. Those were simpler times.

Well, now you can relive these aforementioned times of simpleness, thanks to AGD Interactive, who have remade the classic Quest For Glory II. Complete with the traditional Sierra-esque graphics of the time, this game is fantastic. Go download it immediately.

Cause it’s FREE! Woo hoo!

They also have a rather nice looking, limited edition poster up for grabs on the website. Scope that out while you’re there.

Make Your Own: Sleek Lego Case Mod

It’s “Monolith-esque” as Engadget describes this beautifully crafted High-end PC case mod built from Legos. Far from being just a plaything, this Lego creation was planned out carefully by Luke Anderson using MLCAD (A CAD program that uses Lego bricks). The software was also used to plan out and purchase the pieces through Bricklink, and the entire process is documented on Luke’s blog.

But it doesn’t stop there! He included specs for the parts, a time-lapse streaming video of the process, as well as the actual design documents released under a creative commons license so that anyone could make their own or expand on the original design.

As for the actual cost of the case alone? Luke says it’s around $163, a great price considering the complexity of the project and the value of most computer cases between $100 and $200.

Before I let the thought fade away I wanted to add that this makes a ridiculous comparison to Google’s original case built by Larry Page. If computer cases determined the amount of success in the creator’s lifetime then it looks like Luke Anderson’s about to take over the world.

Geek Artifacts: Unboxing 8 Inch Floppy Disks Discovered In My Cubicle

Geek Artifacts: Unboxing 8 Inch Floppy Disks Discovered In My Cubicle

A few months ago, my desk was moved, a la Office Space, into the back corner of my company’s office. I didn’t mind. I had some good neighbors, a movie fan and a celebrity internet chef, to keep me company.

This week, I went digging around in the former resident’s desk, and discovered this large box of ancient 8 inch floppy disks. Now, many tech blogs receive the awesome opportunity to un-box gorgeous products. iPhones, the Macbook Air, personal digital assistants, video cameras, and so forth.

Since no one tosses any free products the way of the Geekadelph, we’re doing an un-boxing of an 8 inch floppy disk box. Cause really, who has ever done that? No one, that’s who.

Thank God these things are Wang compatible.

Behold the entire un-boxing after the jump. Special thanks to John Freeborn for leaving these in my desk.

Spiderpig Desktop: Made With Folders & Patience

spiderpig_desktop.jpg

Ah, Spiderpig. One of my favorite characters in the Simpsons movie.

One of the guys over at Gizmodo made this amazing Spiderpig desktop using colored folders on his Mac. I can’t even imagine how long this must have taken. The image here does it no justice, so go visit the Gizmodo blog to check it out, full size. Seriously, it’s just awesome.

Ah, desktop clutter art. We love it, and so does Gizmodo.

The Spiderpig entry they had not too long ago really won our hearts, but this Space Invader image wins our nostalgia over immediately.

Mouldable Mouse: Philly Bloggers Rejoice

Mouldable Mouse: Philly Bloggers Rejoice

I know a few people who work with weird shaped mice (I’m looking at you, Brennen), and this mouse will bring tears of joy to their eyes.

Lite-On Technology has invented an amazing mouse, made out of lightweight, mouldable clay that’s covered with nylon and plastic fabrics. You can squeeze and squish the mouse into whatever shape you want, until it fits your hand comfortably. Amazing.

It won a Red Dot Design Award, so hopefully we’ll see this cool toy in stores soon.
