Transformers: Dark of the Moon [Review & Giveaway]

Transformers: War for Cybertron was, hands down, the biggest surprise in gaming for me last year. Despite all the hype surrounding the title, I had serious doubts. Blogs, print magazines, Twitter… everyone was fussing over this title, and I didn’t want to hear any of it. I mean, come on, have you played any of the other Transformers titles? Transformers: The Game or Revenge of the Fallen? Of course you haven’t, why would you do that to yourself?

However, with Gears of War-esque, third-person-shooter style gameplay, an intriguing canon-approved storyline, fluid controls and surprisingly good voice acting, High Moon Studios did the impossible… they redeemed the Transformers franchise in the world of gaming. And now, one year later, they’ve released Transformers: Dark of the Moon, a tie-in to the likely terrible (I’ve yet to see it, and probably won’t) film.

There’s a rule when it comes to most movie-game tie-ins… and that’s that the game is always disappointing. Not entirely so with this one. High Moon’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon isn’t a terrible game. In fact, I’d say its a rather great one. Unfortunately, the game is so short and lacking in features, that its hard to justify the high price tag. (more…)

Welcoming New Sponsors for the Philly Geek Awards: What Up LiveNation & Nicole Yates!

Some delicious noms from Nicole Yates’ Polish Goodness

So the Philadelphia Geek Awards are on their way, and we’re pretty damn excited. Apparently, a lot of other folks are psyched too, and we’ve brought them on as sponsors.

I’d like to welcome on LiveNation and Nicole Yates of Polish Goodness (last week’s Geek of the Week), to the sponsor pool for the Philadelphia Geek Awards.

LiveNation will be helping us print some really lovely programs for the awards ceremony, while Nicole Yates will join National Mechanics and DrinkPhilly during the cocktail hour. She’ll be dishing out her famous pierogis, which you’ve likely snacked on at PYT, to hungry guests.

So. Go ahead and get even more excited about the awards. And if you’re interested in being a sponsor, drop us a line! Join us!

Mega Bad Movie Night 3: Mega Python vs. Gatoroid @ the Academy of Natural Sciences [Ticket Giveaway!]

If you’re a regular Geekadelphia reader, by now you know the deal. When the Academy of Natural Sciences announces another Mad Bad Movie Night, you can expect a ticket giveaway here on the ol’ blog.

Next month, on Thursday, July 14th, the Academy of Natural Sciences will be screening the cinematic masterpiece Mega Python vs. Gatoroid. Two titans of the silver screen are united in this epic film. Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. The plot is believable enough. “After a species of giant python invades the everglades, park rangers breed mutant alligators to counter the threat. Soon, the battle between massive pythons and enormous gators threatens all of Florida.”

It could happen.

Before the screening, you’ll be able to “grab some snacks and a beer, and then check out the many cool things on display at the Academy.” The museum will have out “some amazing boa, python, and alligator specimens from [their] Herpetology Collection. And keep an eye out for some live reptiles too!”

While the movie is playing, the Academy’s “own experts will be onstage to comment on the many scientific absurdities. Think Mystery Science Theater 3000.”After the film, swing by Public House for a bite. You’ll get 20% off your tab if you register online for the screening. Just make sure you show your receipt to your server before ordering.

Oh, and as for winning tickets. I’ve got three pairs of tickets to the screening to giveaway AND six pairs of tickets to the museum. Since Philadelphia treasure Danny Bonaduce will be in the Asylum’s Bigfoot film… let’s go with a local theme for this giveaway. What local Philly celebrity would you want to see in one of these films, and facing what kind of giant animal / monster? I’ll pick my favorites and let you know sometime next week.

Snacks. Drinks. Reptiles. MST3K style commentary? You want to be there. To register, visit the Academy of Natural Science’s Eventbrite page.

Geekadelphia & Quirk Books Presents: A Broetry Slam @ National Mechanics on July 8th

No, that isn’t a typo. I said Broetry Slam.

See, next month, Quirk Books (yes, where I’m employed during the day, Mr. Wants Full Disclosure), is releasing a hilarious book called Broetry, the debut from poet Brian McGackin. Since I started working here I’ve been eager to do some sort of Quirk / Geekadelphia mashup. And now here it is. The first official Broetry Slam, taking place at National Mechanics on Friday, July 8th.

What’s Broetry? It is exactly what it sounds like. Poetry for Dudes. Poems that articulate man’s love of Xbox 360, Mama Celeste’s frozen pizza, Bruce Willis, Star Wars conventions, frat parties, and video game tournaments.

The idea behind the slam is simple. Much like a Poetry Slam, we’ll be inviting members from the audience onto the microphone at National Mechanics to read their prepared (or spontaneous!) Broems.

A panel of expert judges (the author Brian McGackin, the editor Jason Rekulak, Philly’s beloved local comic Doogie Horner) will select the winners and award them appropriate, bro-like prizes. Xbox Live Points from Geekadelphia, tasty beverages and noms from National Mechanics, unicorns and glitter, a manly mini library from Quirk, high fives, Bruce Willis DVDs… we will have a fine array of swag to dish out to the best of the Broets.

Our good friend Anna Goldfarb (of Shmitten Kitten fame) will be there as well, judging a contest of her own… for Best Bro. Come with your collars popped and your hair blown out, as we’ll have awards for the best overall costume. If you aren’t in costume and just so happen to win the award… well, we apologize.

The champion of the evening will be awarded the title Broet Laurette of Philadelphia, and we’ll publish your brilliant poem (and a video of the performance!) on here and Quirkbooks.com.

So that’s basically it. If you’re concerned you don’t quite grasp the concept of Broems, visit the Amazon page for Broetry to look inside the book.

RSVP for the event on Facebook, here. Or just show up, ready to fist pump.

Locust Moon Comics’ Drink & Draw Nights [Video]

Every now and again, the folks at Locust Moon Comics host a Drink & Draw, which is exactly what you think it is. Drinking. Drawing. Beer. Comic illustration.

Andrea, a comic lover and a videographer, was there to capture a recent Drink & Draw, and sent over this fabulous video.

I walked into the store and this is what I saw. Late at night in a comic book store named ‘Locust Moon’ anyone can get together to make some art. And of course, have a few beers. There’s a time to drink and there’s a time to draw…. why not do both?

Have a look and make sure you go to the next one!

We’re Partnering w/ Ford for Wizard World Philly: Win Tickets, Check Out a Car, Be in a Video

Ah, Wizard World Philadelphia. The entire Geekadelphia crew sure is excited. Dan has some celebrity interviews lined up, David plans to read every single comic in the dollar bins, Tim and I will be dressed up in our respective armor (Stormtrooper & Master Chief), Jo is shooting video of cosplayers with her production crew buddies… yeah. It’s going to be an absolute blast.

And we’ve partnered up with Ford to ensure a handful of you get to join us. Free.

See, on Thursday, we’ll be hanging out with Ford and scoping out the new 2011 Focus as a part of the Ford Fordcast Tour. Expect a relatively silly video in the near future, detailing the car and its misc. features.

Let’s just pretend that’s the Comcast Center in the background

Come Friday through Sunday, at the actual event, Ford’s Fordcast tour will hit Wizard World Philadelphia, bringing the lovely car and some fun swag. They’ve got a stash of VIP badges and limited edition lithographs by Damion Scott that they’ll be giving away to test drivers. They are currently working on some more neat things, and we’ll update you as we get… well, updated.

Keep an eye out for us at Wizard World, as Ford will be following us around on Friday with a camera crew, recording our adventures around the convention. It’ll be featured on the Ford Focus microsite. So please do show up, wave your hands around, hold up “I love Tim Quirino” signs, etc.

As for the giveaway… watch our Twitter and Facebook accounts, as well as for a blog detailing the contest later this afternoon. We’re giving away two pairs of tickets on each. Winners will pick up their tickets at the event by Ford’s booth.

So that’s the deal, Geeks. We’re scoping out the car Thursday, you should too Friday through Sunday, and we’re giving away six pairs of tickets to the convention over our various hubs. Good luck!

Build Your Own FM Radio Transmitter @ the Hacktory

Note: Author Knows Nothing of Circuits, This Image May Be Wrong

The folks over at The Hacktory are hosting another event with the Prometheus Radio Project, inviting prospective students to learn how to build their very own radio transmitter.

According to the Hacktory, “participants will be soldering parts and tuning up [their] very own FM radio transmitters. At the end [they'll] have a simple low-power transmitter that you can [be] used to broadcast across a room. Beginners are welcome but space is limited.”

So We Announced An Awards Show: The Philadelphia Geek Awards

The Awards Won’t Look Like This

Last Thursday, we announced the first annual Philadelphia Geek Awards, a fancy evening of recognition and laughter, scheduled to go down at the Academy of Natural Sciences on August 19th. We were excited, the Internet was excited (the website crashed like crazy when it launched), everyone is excited.

The plan? We’re hosting this thing a lot like a faux Oscars. Three to five nominees in each category, a panel of judges selecting the winners, and at the awards, presenters dishing out the shiny, shiny trophies.

As of now, tickets aren’t available yet (save for the nominees). When they go live, we’ll let you know, via the blog, our Facebook and Twitter, and the awards’ Facebook account. Tickets are free, though we are requesting you donate at least a dollar to the Academy of Natural Sciences. After all, they are giving us the museum for free.

So mark your calendar, geeks. August 19th. Philadelphia Geek Awards. Be there.
