Geeks on Film: The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence) [Review]

For a film whose plot has essentially become a meme, the sequel had to be not only smarter but also even more twisted than the original. That is a pretty tall order when you’re the director personally responsible for making one of the most controversial films to hit cinemas in the last 3 years.

This film is not for everyone, and the first film may have been well enough for most. But for those looking for more, director Tom Six is more than happy to oblige his fans. Giving them something that literally as Tom himself puts it, “makes the first film look like My Little Ponies.”

If you haven’t seen the first film, be warned… spoilers ahead.

First the concept of a sequel to the first film seemed slightly unlikely, since (spoiler alert) most of the participants of the first film died before the closing credits. But Six is has crafted a meta sequel if you will, with the film focusing on Martin a small obese mentally challenged man obsessed with the first film to the point he wants to create his own 12 person centipede; as a testament to the film and his twisted desires.

The film is shot in black and white and that only adds to the brutality and the faux realism in contrast to the first film. The film is a hard watch and I don’t say that lightly. Martin is a sadistic, unforgiving and brutal protagonist and we are just forced to witness the transgressions of this very tortured and disturbed individual.

You don’t enjoy a film like Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence), you survive it. But say what you will about the film its probably one of the smartest horror sequels you will probably see this year. For fans of the original you wont leave disappointed, even with the edited version currently screening and for everyone else Dolphin Tale is still playing.

Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence) will be playing a limited engagement this Friday and Saturday at the Ritz at the Bourse.

I’m really hoping that the third movie is about enacting revenge on Tom Six to really bring the meta element home. I’d love to see each film move farther and farther away from 3 act structure (I’ve heard this one throws this convention away). I had no real desire to see the first movie until I heard the concept for the second.
