Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll Returns this Thursday

That’s right. After a two hugely successful Dollar Strolls in a row, Baltimore Avenue is at it again. This Thursday on August 4th, from 5:30 to 8:30pm, West Philadelphia’s Baltimore Avenue (b/w 42nd and 51st St) is the place for the third (of four!) Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll.

Fifteen different Baltimore Ave. businesses will have dollar specials all night long for you to enjoy, including $1 Dock Street pint glasses at Dock Street Brewery, a favorite haunt of Geekadelphia due to their fantastic Tuesday movie nights, and $1 hand printed West Philly notecards at VIX Emporium.

And then there is the food! There will be $1 specials available from Clark Park Farmers’ Market and both the Country Meadows Barbeque stand and Jose Garces’ Guapos Tacos food truck will both be in attendance. Plus, copies of the West Philly Mix Tape will be available for your listening pleasure, and it’s free!

If you are looking for a night out with friends or just a place to get a great bargain (or both) in the city’s University District, the Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll should be right up your alley. Plus, everyone knows a geek loves a deal! It leaves us more money to spend on video games.

Comic Roundup: Amazing Spider-Man, Fathom and Ultimate Fallout

For this week’s Comic Roundup, we book a trip to Spider Island in Amazing Spider-Man, look in on the fallout from the death of Ultimate Spider-Man and join Fathom as she launches her newest series.

Amazing Spider-Man #666
By Dan Slott and Stefano Caselli

When Marvel launched the new direction for Spider-Man with Slott as the only writer, I was really impressed how good the book quickly became. The fun factor had been restored to the Web Slinger and I felt like I was 12 years old again. But somewhere along the way, right around when he joined the FF, the book went off the rails for me and I dropped it. However, with issue #666 serving as the (more…)

Dr. Who: Series 6, Part 1 on Blu-ray & DVD [Review & Giveaway!]

Behind the Scenes in Dr. Who, Series 6, Part 1

BBC recently released Dr. Who Series 6 Part 1 on Blu-ray and DVD, and they let THIS Whovian review it for Geekadelphia! Let me tell you, this is a must have item for any Dr. Who addict. You already know that the cinematic quality of Dr. Who has risen dramatically in the past few years, and watching this Blu-ray will put you in the center of HD greatness.

I took it upon myself to watch the first two episodes right off the bat, and the outdoor scenes shot in America look STUNNING. You can really appreciate the fine detail in color, and the grotesqueness that is The Silence.

Speaking of The Silence, another great feature on the Blu-ray are the Monster Files. If you love the creatures in Dr. Who, and you’re a special effects enthusiast– then you’re going to love this. The Monster Files explores the different aspects that make up The Silence and The Gangers. It tells you everything from the initial idea of these creatures, to the back-story of how they came to be and why they are so terrifying.

Pew pew pew!

Dr. Who Series 6 Part 1 hit stores on July 19th, and we have three DVDs to give away! That’s right. Three!

So… comment below with your favorite Dr. Who quote. I’ll select three of you at random next week and mail you a copy. Good luck!

Geeks on Film: Cowboys & Aliens [Review]

To say Cowboys & Aliens is one of the manliest films of the summer is something of an understatement, when you have both Han Solo and James Bond on the warpath kicking extraterrestrial ass. However with that said, of all the films coming out this Summer, I think I was most apprehensive about this film originally.

Cowboys & Aliens is the story of Jake Lonergan (Craig), a cowboy who wakes up in the desert with no idea who he is, with a strange metal shackle attached to his wrist. After wandering into a small dying mining town under the thumb of a ruthless cattle rancher Woodrow Dolarhyde (Ford), the small settlement is almost immediately attacked by aliens, and many of the townspeople are kidnapped.

Review: Robin of Sherwood Boxed Set 1

Do you ever find yourself wanting to wander Sherwood Forest in a pair of green tights while singing cheeky songs? Well go and watch Robin Hood: Men in Tights then. If you want to know the whole story of Robin Of Loxley, watch Robin of Sherwood, the most complete retelling of the Robin Hood legend.

The Robin of Sherwood Boxed Set 1 on Blu-Ray chronicles the transformation of Robin of Loxley into the thieving scamp we all know as Robin Hood. Michael Praed turns in a quality performance as the Prince of Thieves. Many of you more seasoned TV geeks (Hey! I didn’t say older!) may remember him from Dynasty. Amongst Robin’s merry men is the hot headed Will Scarlet (Ray Winstone). Winstone has been working a bit more recently and you might remember him from The Departed and The Kindom of the Crystal Skull. (Which, according to me, doesn’t exist. Indy was last seen riding off into the sunset on horseback with his dad, Marcus Brody, and Sallah.)

Follow Robin through his most harrowing adventure yet to save the sweet Maid Marian. Robin of Sherwood does not hesitate to delve into the darker depths of the Robin Hood legend that is full of pagan mysticism. I found it to be one of the most interesting adaptations of the tale. The entire series was shot on location in the English countryside which allows it to evoke a feel of authenticity.

The set is not lacking in bonus features. There 3 blu-ray discs are packed with the first 13 episodes from series one and two. But the final disc is loaded with over 8 hours of bonus features. So if you are like me, and bought the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions and watched all the bazillion hours of behind the scenes documentaries…twice, then you will want for nothing.

Robin of Sherwood came out on June 7th and you can get it from www.acornonline.com for $79.99.
