Geeks on Film: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 [Review]

Last Tuesday, Harry Potter Fandom, and the Warner Brother’s accounting department bid a very sad farewell to one of the most successful film franchises ever ($2 billion in profit total, so far for the first 7 films), with the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.

For over 10 years now these films have been an integral part of our collective popular culture and for good reason. The films have always engaged its audiences both young and old, with its coming of age tale about a young wizard who didn’t quite fit in and his misadventures at Hogwarts.

The big question most fans will probably have is whether this film will put a fitting bookend on one of the most beloved film series in recent history. The short answer? Yes it does.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 literally picks up right where the first film left off, forgoing any recap whatsoever. I found this refreshing since I found the first part to be my least favorite film in the series, due to all the setup needed for this film to literally just move along plot wise full-speed ahead, and that it does without regret or remorse for the fans.

The film is literally 2+ hours of pure plot and character resolution and honestly doesn’t miss a beat. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when the credits rolled and I felt the film was a fitting end to a great series. My only quip would be to ditch the 3D for this one, this film was an up-convert and the 3D adds nothing to the story or visuals whatsoever.

Did it live up to expectations? Yes it did. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 gets a 4.5 out of five stars. If only all film series were wrapped up this  nicely.
