Raven Gregory’s Fly #1: Review & Giveaway
Raven Gregory is best known as one of the lead writers and Executive Editor of Zenescope’s ever expanding line of horror comics. This summer he is writing the company’s first line wide crossover, The Dream Eater Saga as well as finishing the first arc of the new series Grimm Fairy Tales: Myths and Legends. So it is truly incredible that with all of that going on, he also found the time to launch his newest creator owned series, Fly.
Fly is the story of three teenagers and their addiction to a new drug that gives them superpowers. And if you are thinking this is some set-up for a new hero in tights series, think again. Gregory is using his own experiences to tell a powerful story about drug addiction and what it can cost you.
Told in both the present day and flashbacks, the first issue introduces us to Eddie and what the drug has already done to his life. Gregory pulls no punches and you can see that this is not the usual Zenescope fare. The artist, Eric J, switches art styles between the current scenes and the flashbacks and it works really well. You would almost think there were two artists working on the book, that is how distinctly different the pages are. It is quite an accomplishment.
Fly is a different kind of series; you can see that from just the first issue. It is the kind of comic that’s in short supply these days; a book that takes risks and challenges the reader. Go read Fly, you can thank me later.
As a bonus, one lucky Geekadelphia reader will receive a special Zenescope exclusive variant of Fly #1. Just leave a comment and tell us what superpower you would like to have and we will pick someone at random at the end of next week!

At Wizard World, I should have spent more time at the Zenescope table. As for the super powers, mine would be superhuman strength. Way stronger than Superman without the Kryptonite weakness.
I would want the power of invisibility. On the level that Invisible woman has it. People often underestimate how powerful and threatening/useful it can be.
Invisibility because you can’t hit what you can’t see also it could have benefits for good or bad.
I would love to have the ability to teleport to any distance and be conscious of where I would be teleporting to, so that I dont end up in a bad situation. As the saying goes, “Prevention is better than cure.” So if someone was trying to attack me, rather than getting stabbed and having wolverine healing, I could teleport away or teleport and knee them in the face. It beats flying too if you are stuck in an airplane you have to get out for flying to be really effective. And best of all, you could teleport pizza to your house instead of waiting for the delivery guy to bring it.
If I could choose a power it would have to be the ability to reset time by 1 hour. I know 1 hour seems short but to me if I made a mistake or something serious happened I could make an effort to correct that mistake. I hear too often flight, healing factor, or something normal. I just think about my past and if I had the time to correct it how would I often.
As a kid I always wanted ‘laser vision’, but the practical applications are pretty limited.
As a young teenage I wanted x-ray vision…what hormonal young boy didn’t.
Now as an adult (and father of two) I’d like the ability to be able to sleep through anything.
But now for the real choice. If I had to choose only one I would choose the ability to time travel. Who wants to know the next Powerball lotto numbers?
i’m actually pretty happy without super powers(ala batman) but if they were giving them away i suppose flying would be cool. being able to just up and go, anywhere is a good option. of course you’d have to look out for no-fly zones. nothing like getting a super power then getting shot down by some trigger happy military!

If I could have any super power it would be to be a telepath like professor x that way I could help peace treaties and be able to know if the bad people are who they say they are and also the good ones. I could also help solve crimes help find missing children. Get those pedofiles all put away. I could also stop crimes from happening and change peoples minds. See thats the best power thats the super hero I would be
I’d love cold control powers. It would be nice to walk around in an air-conditioned zone all summer. I’d shore up the polar ice caps to do my part for humanity.
Flying is the usual answer and maybe super strength. I think the ability to travel back and forth in time would be cool, I would have the ability to change things before they happen.
