Geeks on Film: Super 8 [Review]

Super 8, which opens today, is quite simply the summer film we have all be waiting for. The film stands alone as the most original offering this summer and a well needed respite for the film goer looking for a great narrative that won’t have you on Wikipedia when you get home from the theater.

Super 8 takes us back to 1979, and is the story of a group of teenagers that, while shooting a zombie film, accidentally witness a horrific train wreck. During the wreck, a mysterious creature is let loose, and the film then turns into a mixture of Cloverfield and The Goonies as the kids try to finish their film while strange things are afoot in their small town.

The film is a truly the best of both worlds scenario from Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams. While the story was a collaboration by both, Abrams then took the story and translated it to screen. While the film does have Abrams trademark slick look lens flares and all, it’s an excellent period piece that had me in the first reel with its captivating story and excellent casting.

This Spielberg/Abrams hybrid will no doubt go down as my favorite film of summer. The film is a nostalgic love letter to not only a simpler time, but the films of that era as well.  Super 8 is an instant classic and a true blockbuster in every sense of the word. Super 8 easily gets a 5 out of 5 stars, so if you go see one film this summer this should probably be it.
