Archaia’s Bleedout: Review

Archaia’s newest graphic novel Bleedout is the best of both worlds for a geek like myself. Based on the popular MMORPG Crimecraft (from Vogster Entertainment), Bleedout refers to both the comic as well as the newest campaign available to CC players.

While the online game is still in beta mode, players can satiate their need for more CC and comic fans will find the Bleedout graphic novel packed with some of the hottest comic book talent.

Even if you’re not a gamer, Bleedout offers an introduction that provides enough information on Sunrise City, the basis of the story. The world has been thrust into a post-apocalyptic crisis after expiring the earth’s entire oil supply (i.e., a “bleedout”) and for Sunrise City that means mob “don” Nunzio Bianchi running an extensive crime syndicate (known as The Scorpion Chamber) that controls the entirety of the city.

VisitPhilly Launches Official Foodspotting Guides & Contest to Win Delicious Prizes!

Foodspotting makes it easy to find nearby food to nom; and we all know Philly is the kind of city you can eat your entire way across. Now that VisitPhilly has teamed up with Foodspotting to give us official guides for Philadelphia and The Countryside, we’ve now got a way to track our progress on epic food quests.

Ever feel like hitting up every local brewery? VisitPhilly has 10 of them on their “Beer Lovers’ Breweries” guide. Cheesesteak 101 would probably have been useful when my girlfriend went on her cheesesteak crawl just over a year ago (yes, seriously). Our city may be known for iconic cheesesteaks, soft pretzels and Tastykakes but we can’t forget all the Spanish and Latin American-influenced cuisine found all over, Philly ¡Te Ama!’s “Comida” Latina guide should be the detonator for those seeking an explosion of latino flavor.

All in all this is great news and to kick things off in a big way, they’re randomly selecting a grand-prize winner who follows VisitPhilly on Foodspotting and completes the “Famous Philly Flavors” guide between May 11 (now) and May 25. The winner will receive:

Ten randomly selected first-prize winners will each win a Flavors of Philly tour by City Food Tours.

Awesome right? Get started: foodspotting.com/visitphilly

This past weekend was the TooManyGames convention, held this year at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA.

If people didn’t get their fill of video games this weekend, then they clearly did not try hard enough.

We had the pleasure of hitting up the Expo on Friday evening when the event was kicking off, right when they were about to host a screening of “The Wizard.”

Comic Roundup: Artifacts, X-Men and Moon Knight

This week in the Roundup we look at the return (yet again) of Moon Knight, see how Top Cow’s Artifacts is going and check out the beginning of the next X-Men event with Prelude to Schism.

Moon Knight #1
By Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev

Marvel, in its infinite wisdom, has decided to give Moon Knight yet another shot at a monthly title. Why is a mystery to me but it could have something to do with the fact they got Bendis and Maleev, one of the best creative teams in comics right now, to work on the title. But unfortunately, even that isn’t enough to save a lackluster first issue.

While the art by Maleev is everything you have come to expect from the artist (a gritty feel, dynamic storytelling) it’s the plot that left me less then thrilled. Bendis has relocated Marc Spector to Los Angeles, made him a TV executive and gotten him involved with a plot to sell an Ultron robot.

Vote Vote Vote: Philly’s Food in Jars a Finalist in Saveur Magazine’s Best Food Blog Awards

There are a lot of food blogs in Philadelphia. A lot. Just about every self proclaimed foodie has a blogspot up, possibly hooked up to Foodbuzz or Yelp, where they rant about their latest kitchen adventures or outdoor dining mishaps. Everyone wants to be Drew Lazor. So its easy to sometimes pass by, and indeed, ignore some of the truly great ones.

Luckily, Saveur Magazine didn’t do that.

Last Wednesday, Saveur Magazine announced their Best Food Blog Award finalists… and a certain lucky Philadelphian can count herself among the nominees. Marisa McClellan, who a lot of you might know from her work writing for GRID Magazine or her Fork You! vodcast. She also runs a site called Food in Jars, where she writes about the joys of canning. And for this wonderful site, she’s been nominated.

Take the time to register on Saveur (it’s a pain, I know, but shut up), and vote for our lil’ hometown heroine. With her charming writing and brilliant photography, she deserves it.

The whole Geekadelphia crew is rooting for you, Marisa. Give ‘em hell. And if that doesn’t work, give ‘em some of your strawberry preserves or something. Them jawns is delicious.

Splatter Matters for Japanese Relief: Coming to Philly Next Friday!

There are few charity events I can get behind as enthusiastically as Splatter Matters,  a series of events sponsored by Rue Morgue Magazine, Sushi Typhoon and JACL. What this essentially boils down to are screenings of the some amazing films by Sushi Typhoon across the US, with 100% of the proceeds going to the  Japanese Red Cross!

The Philly stop will be co-sponsored by the Philly Japan Arts Matsuri: A Celebration to Benefit Japanese Relief and will consist of the Philadelphia premiere of Hell Driver the new film by Yoshihiro Nishimura, and performances by bands High Teen Boogie and Uzuhi!

The event is taking place Friday, May 13th at the Prince Music Theater and tickets are $10 (film) and $15 (concert). This is not only a great opportunity to see a woman battle zombies with a samurai sword that is also a chainsaw… but a great chance to help the relief effort in Japan! See you there!

For a mere $20 you can see ALL FIVE of the original Planet of the Apes films (the good ones!) back-to-back in one marathon-style sitting.

I am a huge fan of the series and can’t wait for this event! The screening takes place Sunday, July 31st at the International House. You can get tickets and more information here. I suggest getting your tickets as soon as you can, as these events tend to sell out.

See you there!

In Photos: The 2011 Philadelphia Zombie Crawl

This year’s Philly Zombie Crawl took place as it always does, on Easter Sunday. For the first time, the Zombie Crawl opened its doors to all ages with their pre-party at the TLA.

South Street was crawling with a wide array of zombies, from Easter bunnies to undead characters from Tron. People not participating in the event were left wondering what portal they stumbled into. Walking down the streets of South Street in zombie gear, fellow zombies nodded to one another in admiration. Everyone had a bloody smile on their face.

When asking people what they loved most about Zombie Crawl, people always urged the overall freedom it gave. Everyone was able to be themselves, and it was virtually a judge free environment– leaving the evening nothing but room to have a ridiculous amount of fun.

Keep your eyes peeled! The crawl organizers are planning the Zombie Beach Party on Saturday June 18th, and The Zombie Prom to kick off the 2011 Halloween season. The costumes are creative, and the people are awesome! You should definitely attend.
