Pom Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold [Review]

In Pom Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, Morgan Spurlock brings the same level of awareness he did to the Big Macs to product placement in all wakes of media. I have a sneaking suspicion that when people walk out of that theater, they will never look at any media the same way ever again.
The concept of the film alone is pure genius. In order to make a documentary about product placement in films, Morgan decides to create the first “Docbuster.” He does this by selling ad placement in his film to finace it and document the entire process from start to finish. The level of transparency in a process that is usually an after thought to consumers of media, is both refreshing and shocking to behold.

In pure Spurlock fashion, the film is truthful, insightful and confrontational all the same time. We see the Morgan start the difficult journey to find a brand to sponsor a man that has forever tarnished one of the recognizable brands in the world. Once the sponsors start to roll in we then begin to deal with not just the contractual, but also the ethical and artistic repercussions of taking someone else’s money to feature and promote their product in his documentary.
You really get a comedic (and sometimes troubling) look into the lengths brands will go to get their products in front of people. I have to applaud all the sponsors who had the guts to participate in such a great project that will hopefully make both consumers and brands smarter going forward.
I loved Pom Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold. It definitely shed some light on an aspect of mass media most overlook and one that definitely has a profound impact in our daily lives. With that said I give Pom Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold gets a solid 5 out of 5 stars.
Go see this film at the Ritz East and support the most truth you will probably ever get in advertising, ever.
