Win Passes to an Advance Screening of Your Highness

Your Highness (which hits theaters Friday, April 8th) is the new fantasy comedy starring the Oscar winning Natalie Portman, and the Oscar nominated James Franco in roles that were definitely shot before their Oscar nods.  The film is directed by David Gordon Green who you might know better as the director of Pineapple Express. The film looks to be a really fun and raunchy romp through the the middle-ages.

I first saw the trailer for this at the beginning of Paul and it definitely got my attention. The plot goes something like this: Thadeous (Danny McBride) is a lazy, arrogant prince who, with his brother Fabious (James Franco), must go on an epic quest in order to save their father’s kingdom. Add Natalie Portman as a warrior princess and Zooey Deschanel as Fabious’ bride how can you not want to see this?

We have 30 passes for a screening Tuesday April 5th at the Ritz Five. Wanna check it out? Simply comment with your favorite sword and sorcery film by April 3rd and the top entries will be checking out this film on Geekadelphia. In the meantime check out the trailer below.

The Princess Bride is a timeless classic and one of my all time favorite movies!

  2. Rachel March 31, 2011 at 4:52 pm #

does masters of the universe count because i was so into that shit when I was 5.

  3. Becky March 31, 2011 at 4:52 pm #

The Princess Bride is the best in the genre – whatever genre that is. It’s got comedy, adventure, magic, miracles, swordfighting, pirates, and even some kissing. Massively quotable and tons of fun. Is there anyone who doesn’t like this film?

  4. Erich Hall March 31, 2011 at 4:52 pm #

Does Star Wars count? Cause, you know, laser swords and The Force and stuff.

  5. Kristen March 31, 2011 at 4:56 pm #

Let me get my old school Disney on and say Quest for Camelot. Any King Arthur story is a classic in that genre!

Army of darkness. Even if ash isn’t the one carrying it, there has got to be a sword in there.

I’m not going to go with the obvious choice (LOTR)… so instead I’ll say a movie that still makes me laugh:

    Robin Hood: Men in Tights

  8. Kelly March 31, 2011 at 5:07 pm #

Someone beat me to saying Star Wars, so I guess I’ll go with Robin Hood Men in Tights

My favorite sword is the GUNBLADE from FFXIII.
    Oh wait, S&S is a fantasy sub-genre?

  15. Liam O March 31, 2011 at 5:44 pm #

probably a tie between ladyhawke and legend…was that the right answer??

  16. Kris March 31, 2011 at 5:51 pm #

I would’ve said The Princess Bride or Robin Hood: Men in Tights, but those have already been said, so I’ll go with Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

well since my first pick was said dozens of times (Princess Bride), how about Conan the Barbarian!

  21. Connie March 31, 2011 at 7:03 pm #

Can I say the Labyrinth? Does that count? I mean there was some sword play… and definitely tons of magic/sorcery going on!

Stardust! It’s like The Princess Bride for girls. Where else can you find Robert DeNiro as a gay, cross dressing pirate, and a peanut gallery composed of dead brothers with sequential names?

  28. Colin March 31, 2011 at 9:19 pm #

Bang for the buck I feel the 10+ hours of the LOTR trilogy take the title.

Besides those I’d go with Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows Pt 1. (Hey theres a sword in it!)

Other great ones are MP and the Holy Grail, Princess Mononoke, Sleeping Beauty, and Sword in the Stone.

  29. James March 31, 2011 at 9:50 pm #

The princess bride, hands down. My wife recently saw a clip of it and, after I was done laughing, asked me what movie it was.

    Inconceivable!

Our marriage was mostly dead after that but, since there is a shortage of perfect breasts, we’ve made do.

There’s not alot of love for Dragonslayer in these posts yet, and it’s completely blowing my mind! That movie led to me getting in many a sword-fights with my younger brother (with wiffle bats, people, not real swords), which of course led to many black eyes and groundings.

I am with the moviekid: Sword in the stone and the princess bride are both classics.

I recently had a dozen people over to my home, to spend an evening watching a film which I would qualify as a classic “sword and sorcery” flick. It featured its own mysterious and unexplained magic, swords of many varieties, and even a bit of metallurgical history behind them!

What really enlightened me was the specific demographic of my guests, and their reaction to the film. My audience was composed of couples, and in each case, the male half of the couple had convinced his female counterpart to attend, because she had not seen the movie previously. Every female present had been instructed that she “had to see this movie!”

My fellow guys and I supported each other in this, stating that this movie is not simply a 1980′s science-fiction film of dubious quality, but in fact represented a Way Of Life for those who grew up with it. The film’s lead didn’t actually speak any English, and learned the lines phonetically? That gave him GRAVITAS! Can’t figure out why the supporting actor, an otherwise famous Hollywood star, would have agreed to appear in this film? Adds to the mystery and legend! What was up with that awful CGI dragon at the end? WHO CARES, we love it, and it inspired us to become the men that we are today!

Our girlfriends, of course, thought we were even crazier AFTER seeing the movie, than before. Forming their own support circle, they looked upon us with confusion, pity, and then finally a solemn acceptance that being men, we simply could not be helped. The wonders and majesty of this favorite film of many was lost on them. Resigned that the girls would never understand our love for this piece of inspirational cinema, we returned to quoting the film, and discussing its awful sequels.

What film had we gathered to watch?

Why, it was HIGHLANDER, of course.

I think the 1981 film “Excalibur” is pretty incredible.

Pirates of the Caribbean: curse of the black pearl

  38. Sam E April 1, 2011 at 5:06 pm #

Since the Princess Bride doesn’t have magic, and Star Wars has Light Sabers, not swords, I’m going to go with Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.

  39. Linda April 1, 2011 at 7:12 pm #

Best sword and sorcery film? The little known Disney classic – The Black Cauldron. Although I liked the videogame even more. Magical pig!

I don’t know why but I love the old “Merlin” miniseries/movie from 1998 is a nostalgic love of mine. The end, where they turn their back on fantasy, was so magical. It and the miniseries “Odyssey,” though a bit tacky are such faithful adaptations.

Oh man, DragonHeart will always remain in ‘my heart’. I watched that so many times, just love me some Sean Connery with that Dragon!

I love this whole genre, but I’m going to say that The Last Unicorn is my favorite.

  44. Melissa April 1, 2011 at 9:43 pm #

I have to agree with many of the choices already given: Legend, LOTR, Excalibur. But 300 is also a great movie that definitely falls into this category.

  45. Jeff April 3, 2011 at 12:15 am #

    I love Excalibur

  46. Nick April 3, 2011 at 10:29 am #

Yes, the “LORD OF THE RINGS” Trilogy IS too obvious an answer. But for good reason. It crushes all other sword an sorcery movies like so many Orcs marching into battle. Now “GIVE ME MY PRECIOUSSSS!” (or “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”)
