Quirk Books’ Witch Craft [Impressions]

Guest Post by Sarah Solomon

Considering Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year, I was uber excited to receive Philadelphia’s Quirk Books’ newest addition, Witch Craft. It’s an adorable how-to guide for creating Halloween themed accessories and treats ranging from vampire bite necklaces to tangerine jack-o-lanterns.

Each craft or decorative food comes with step-by-step instructions, and a charming full color photograph. The combination of the two makes any craft feasible, even for the most inept or hopeless. I’m excited to try the easily procured “chocolate marshmallow skulls” or attempt the “lovely wicked tutu” to wear to a Halloween party.

Granted I will probably make it shorter than instructed, but I’m just trying to live the vainly naïve dream. You’ll find yourself flipping through the book and mentally checking off what you want to make for friends and loved ones, or what to create with your offspring (whether they be illegitimate or not.) All in all it’s a cute and fun read, and a must-have for any craft or Halloween lovers library.

Want to win a copy? We’re giving one away! Just leave a comment about your favorite Halloween tradition, and we’ll pick a winner at random at the end of the week. Good luck!

I love dressing up for Halloween, even if I’m not really doing anything for Halloween, I still wear some sort of costume!

I love coming up with costume ideas. You never know what random accessories and old clothes can become with a little bit of imagination!

I have two favorite traditions for Halloween.
    1. Carving pumpkins. It’s an art form. And you get to roast the seeds after you’ve scooped out the guts!
    2. In St. Louis, MO, kids have to tell a joke when they go trick-or-treating to get candy. It’s a local tradition. The first Halloween I was there a little kid started to get very upset with me because I didn’t ask to hear their joke. Fortunately the mother explained the tradition. :) After I understood, I came to really enjoy listening to the littlest kids try to tell their joke without giving away the punchline!

Handing candy out to children. It makes them so happy and makes their parents so unhappy at the same time! Hahaha.

I usually buy way too much candy and then never have any kids show up to trick-r-treat.

My favorite Halloween tradition is getting everything ready EXCEPT the costume, and then on the day of, digging through my wardrobe and immediately making up my costume from what I have on hand. It’s more fun than it sounds!

Tip: Buy a good makeup set first. Too many people rely on clothes or masks. Good makeup makes a costume awesome!

Tip 2: It helps that I collect stripey socks and at least a few shirts I don’t mind ripping up if need be.

My husband and I got married on Halloween. So now we get to start the tradition of celebrating this most awesome holiday together. :)

I love to craft for Halloween! I feel that homemade decorations are so much better than store bought. :)

As a child, I always loved making my costume. My mom always helped us to be really creative. Two costumes that stand out for me are: 1) The year my brother was a train conductor – at about age 4 – and we made a cardboard train for him to wear. He kept tripping over it!! 2) The year my sister & I dressed up together as a two-headed monster. This was probably the best and worst costume because we were stuck together inside of my dad’s big black sweatshirt!!

I always loved dressing up as a kid when my grandfather would take me out. We used pillowcases we got some much candy. He would put on goggles over some netting and paint his face like a kid just so we could have a good time together. So my tradition today is watching the little ones with their parents esp their dads and just enjoying the fun the family is having together.

My favorite tradition is to watch all of my favorite scary or spooky movies starting with those I watched as a child. It always gets me in the mood for Halloween.
