Can High Moon Studios Redeem the Transformers Franchise?

Screenshots from Joystiq

From the moment I first saw Optimus Prime transform from a truck into a giant robotic fighting machine, I’ve wanted to control his raw, transforming power.

If you’re on the same page, then you’re probably excited for High Moon Studios and Activision’s upcoming release, Transformers: War for Cybertron.

Judging by the trailers I’ve seen, this just might be what the doctor ordered for what’s been a shaky run for our beloved franchise in disguise. Especially after having to deal with the subpar movie-tie ins Transformers: The Game and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

This fresh installment in the Transformers gaming saga looks to deliver Gears of War-esque gameplay and a new storyline that’ll add to the Transformers cannon. Gamers can also look forward to building their own custom Transformer for the online multiplayer.

Two of the classic Transformers were recently revealed as playable characters in the game, Ironhide  on the Autobot side and Skywarp from the Decepticons. I’ve included some concept art of these two guys after the jump, have a look.

So, dear readers, what do you think? Will the War for Cybertron save the Transformers video game franchise? Sound off in the replies.

The game does look pretty decent, and from what I’ve been reading it seems like it might just deliver. Their recent title (Bourne Identity) wasn’t too bad, so who knows. Might be a solid game. I guess we’ll see. Looking forward to your review of the game, Parker.

Currently, I only game on handhelds, so there hasn’t been much to celebrate regarding Transformers in forever- and the WfC game coming out for the DS will do the stupid “Autobot & Decepticon” versions…again. I’m hoping it at least plays better than it looks (for the DS- the XBOX360 & PS3 versions look Awesome, and seem best suited to capturing the feel of transforming warbots).

Manobon, I’ll be honest, I’ve never really spent any quality time with the DS so I have no idea how the experience will translate. It’s really nice when developers get the experience down for each platform they release on instead of just porting them over sloppily for the extra buck. Regardless, I think this game looks awesome and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

Only if they use the 80′s music and sound effects!
