This coming Monday December 14th at 8:00pm The Trocadero is showing Jennifer’s Body as part of their excellent Movie Monday series. Tickets are a mere $3 and it even goes towards a drink; and get this, if you arrive before 7pm you get a FREE beer and a bag of popcorn. Not a bad deal. The showing is of course is a 21+ event and The Trocadero was kind enough to offer a Movie Monday Prize Pack for our loyal Geekadelphia readers that includes free admission for two people, two free drinks and two free bags of popcorn, talk about a cheap date. All you have to do is comment on this post with your favorite 80’s horror film. The film actually doesn’t street till December 29, so your actually getting to check out the film before it hits DVD and Blu-ray, and for $3 you can’t beat it.

Now Jennifer’s Body is a film I feel pretty strongly about and have been meaning to do a post on, simply because I feel it got a really bad rap. All because of one person, but can one person cause a film to FAIL? If you’re Megan Fox the answer is definitely… a resounding yes! Jennifer’s Body had everything going for it; the talented Diablo Cody fresh off her success with Juno scripted it with her trademark witty dialog and larger than life female characters. The film was directed by Karyn Kusama who also directed Girl Fight and Aeon Flux; and had proven her ability to make women kick ass with out the need to over sexualize and exploit. The cast was solid; most were veterans of teen films, and all had a decent imdb page to speak of. Don’t forget the story, Diablo Cody is a huge 80’s horror buff and said this was her love letter the genre; it’s kinda like Heathers, only with demons in it. How can you go wrong with that? If it just so happens that your star you’re trying to sell the movie on, is a 23 year-old with severe entitlement issues to the point she thinks she is bigger than Michael (I LOVE TO BLOW THINGS UP!) Bay, and who hammered out her acting chops against giant imaginary robots and it shows you might have a problem.

The problem is this: Jennifer’s Body came out right when the whole Michael Bay and Meghan Fox feud had hit full swing, and where reality finally hit this little spoiled brat right between the eyes. See what happened is all this “sex symbol” business went right to her head and she decided to take a crack at the man who pretty much made her career, comparing him to Hitler; which even after Transformer 2 still seems like it might be a bit much. After that the backlash began because no matter how hot and bothered Meghan can look in a tank top, Michael Bay blows up a lot of stuff and in America that will beat almost anything except full frontal nudity in films any day! So because of that people decided they weren’t going to support her or her little movie, but it wasn’t just her movie.

The sad thing about this is the film doesn’t really rest on Megan’s shoulders at all, it may have her name on the marquee for ticket sales but her co-star Amanda Seyfried does all the legwork, and puts in a solid performance as her “movie ugly”(ie:she is wearing glasses) best friend. There are some interesting themes in the film and some great Diablo Cody one-liners. The movie really succeeds in spite of having Megan Fox in it and as far I was concerned was a fitting tribute to the films it was meant to pay homage to. Sadly was just eclipsed by an ego that has hopefully landed now that even her giant robot imaginary friends might not want to play with her anymore.

The only thing I hate more than Diablo Cody and everything she touches is… You know, I don’t even know… probably killing kittens or something.

I saw this movie in the theater and kinda enjoyed it. Prolly would see it again, maybe. Favorite 80s horror film? Definitely gotta be “The Gate”.

I haven’t seen this movie, but I loooved Amanda Seyfried in Mean Girls and I heard she’s now starring in three upcoming flicks, so I believe she runs the show. Sorry guys, I know you love the plastic, but Megan Fox somehow manages to set back feminism 50 years back every time she opens her mouth… so I have zero interest in seeing her in anything.

I have to agree with you Bianca that Megan Fox does indeed look and even act manufactured, but I think playing a demon from hell who feasts on the blood of high-school boys suits her well and the role seemed like it was written just for her “range”. I happen to think Diablo Cody is alot like Kevin Smith or Quentin Tarantino you either like her style of dialog or you don’t, I happen to enjoy her style and it’s great to see a strong female writer out there holding her own.

If you liked Heathers and other similar dark HS centered movies like Jawbreaker, you’ll probably like this if you can get through the first 20-30 minutes or so of sprinkled Cody-isms.

Definitely more enjoyable than I had ever expected.
