I agree with Mr. Lopez up there. Just because they were in fact played by fictional characters does not mean that we know for sure that this movie was a fake. Like he said it coulb be they got the information and decided to put together a movie. The families of the people could have just wanted the peoples names to be kept private you never know. I mean if it was my family and I agreed for someone to make it into a movie I sure wouldn't give them permission to spread my family members name all over peoples TV screens especially over something that horriffic.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre was created based on a few traits of several (real) serial killers, so it was in fact based on bits and pieces of a "true story".

Still doesn't clarify wether the movie was based on actual events. I mean it could be true but just the names of the characters were changed and the location. I am a roman catholic and firmly believe in demons, angels, and exorcism. So we all know that Micah and Katie were fictitional characters but could it be possible the someone else or some other couple were in fact haunted by a demonic spirit. Look at The Exorcism Of Emily Rose for example based off a true story but yet was made into a movie with of course a little hollywood fabrication.

Very insightful post on the truth behind horror films. What I think is particularly interesting about Paranormal Activity is the grassroots viral marketing campaign that brought the low-budget film to blockbuster status. I wrote more about this here: http://popculture2point0.wordpress.com/2009/12/08/best-of-2009-paranormal-activity-finds-abnormal-amount-of-success-thanks-to-online-following/
