Contest is over. Congrats to the winner!
I take a lot of pictures. I mean, I live in Philadelphia, there’s always something to photograph. Puppies in Rittenhouse, vinyl toys at Omoi, strange gadgets at the local used electronics shop, rare comics (or sometimes just Brian) at Brave New Worlds… whether I’m shooting with my incredibly beat up, piece of garbage Nikon Coolpix L3 (circa 2005) or my baby, a Pentax digital SLR, I always have a camera ready for casual photo taking.
However, those same pictures tend to sit on my camera’s memory card, sometimes for months, before I get around to loading them onto my computer, Flickr, or whatever. This is also the case with pictures from vacation, or when I go back to visit pals in New Jersey. I’ll get those nagging “when are you gonna put them on Facebook” questions, which slowly drive me up the wall.
So needless to say, I was pretty excited when the folks behind Eye-Fi sent me their wireless SD card, and asked me to give it a spin. No longer will I have to hear the classic saying on Twitter, a favorite line of Mikeyil and Joystiq’s Ben Gilbert… “Pictures, or it didn’t happen!”
The Eye-Fi lets you, the amateur photographer who constantly forgets about the pictures on the old point-and-shoot, upload pictures wireless to your computer / photo sharing site, via a wireless internet connection. I was happy to discover that I could connect to my computer at work and my computer at home, using both Wi-Fi networks, and that I wasn’t just committed to one. The Eye-Fi stores nearly three dozen saved networks, so you can count on being able to use it in a lot of places.
Once my camera was close to one of these networks, the snaps would load up to whatever site I specified. Honestly, I’m a bigger fan of having them upload straight to my computer though. It’s not that I take dirty photos or anything, but still, I wouldn’t want blurry or poorly taken pictures immediately popping up on my Facebook. Plus the Eye-Fi sorts your images by date in special folders, which is nice.
All in all, the Eye-Fi is a solid product. I’m looking forward to using it a lot more in the coming weeks, especially with the wealth of parties going on in Philadelphia through the holidays.
The Contest: Now, for those of you interested in winning one of these cards for your own, I’ve got one for you to win! All you have to do is leave a comment in this post, or send out a Tweet with the hashtag “#eye-fi” with a link back to this post. For official contest rules, legal jargon, etc… please visit this page. We’ll be accepting entries all the way until December 13th, 2009. We’ll pick one of you at random, and announce the winner. Good luck!
I’ve included a video after the jump that demonstrates how the card works. Have a look.

Do Want!
Love you guys!
I can has Eye-Fi?
I’d love to have this so when I visit Philly and take pictures around the city with Eric I won’t have to pack my card reader
Holy snaps convenience! Especially for those of us that take pictures on a regular basis but upload them a little less regularly…
Count me in, that looks neato…and I always always need more portable storage.
I always lose my USB cables when trying to upload the most incriminating photos, how genius!
I’ve been hoping to see get one of these cards ever since I read about them. It’s such a cool idea, it should be built into every memory card!
Loved Eye-Fi until my wife and I lost several pictures and a few videos of our new baby after a bad download. We’ll never use it again.
This would be perfect! I just bought my Fiance a new digital camera and this would be the perfect accessory.
PLZ PLZ PLZ
Oh yeah, I’ll take two please!
Man what are the odds…I literally just recommended an Eye-Fi an hour ago to somebody who recently had her camera stolen. She was all upset because it had pics from her brother’s wedding and I told her about the Eye-Fi and how it would have transferred those photos to her computer and she wouldn’t have lost ‘em.
I’ve never actually used one and would love to win one (especially because they work with iPhone pics!)
Cool! You’re a Pentaxian! I can has eye-fi?
I’ve wanted one since they recently added FTP xfers. Gimme.
Hi Eric, thanks for your blog post.
If you want to select which pictures to wirelessly transfer, you can use the Selective Transfer feature. More info here: http://www.eye.fi/blog/control-what-leaves-your-camera
Hey its worth a try. This is a great idea.
Oh, oh , oh, pick me! please? This is perfect for someone as lazy as myself.
I’ve been eyeing this for months. But my current camera uses xD cards. I’d love to win so that I can use it as ammo for talking my wife into letting me get a new camera.
