Six Reasons I Am Breaking Up With Heroes!

Geeksylar

Heroes premiered it’s 4th season Monday night, and while I sat there passively watching, I felt much like you do when you have decided you have broken up with someone, but you still show up to their birthday. Because even though you know in your heart it’s over – it’s a really crappy thing to do, breaking up with someone on their birthday. Well now that the premier is over I am taking my toothbrush and my DVDs and getting out of this relationship – while I still can hold my head up high. I’m not the only one, apparently 60% of their audience has also said, very awkwardly “It’s not you it’s me. But let’s just be friends, ok?”.  As this is like most break-ups in my life, it is a bit of a messy one. So to air my dirty laundry here are my 6 reasons why I am dumping this loser series and why you should too. Warning there are spoilers to be had.

6. Hiro Nakamura losing his powers.- While I believe future Hiro in the first season was quite possibly the ultimate bad-ass of the show, once he lost his powers he became a grade-A liability.  This basically took the one character most of the comic book geeks like myself identified with, and made him normal like us and quite honestly no longer interesting to watch. That and him and Ando should just get a room already.

5. Last season’s ending with Nathan dying, and Sylar taking his place but no-longer knowing he is Sylar. WTF!-Ok this is one of my greatest issues with the show the inability to kill off certain key characters for good and keeping them around in some form or another. This definitely shows an inability to commit to anything, quite honestly. I mean how many times has Ali Larter been brought back? Sorry, I never thought she was the greatest actress and I never thought she was the most interesting of characters.  Honestly I was very happy when she was finally killed off, or so I thought.  Heroes can not make up its mind, and it’s so afraid to make a bad decision it doesn’t in fact make one at all.  You know, I really thought last season they were going to thin the ranks a bit, all they did was introduce a bunch of characters who might as well been wearing red Starfleet shirts.

season2

4. Season 2.

3. Not showing the fight at the end with season 3 with Peter, Sylar and Nathan.- I spent 2 seasons looking forward to this battle royale of epic proportions, and what do I get? Nothing!?! Just like the end of season 1. All I got was the knowledge, that it made a whole lot of noise. I know the old adage about alluding to the action off camera and not showing it – sorry this is not time to do it! THIS IS YOUR SEASON FINALE! Not showing probably one of the most epic battles seemed like the last cop-out – I, and most of the fans could endure. I don’t know if it was because of budget or maybe even the writers had nothing. Not showing this fight was a huge let-down, and made me lose what little respect I had left for the show. This definitely also goes under a failure to perform in my book.

2. Sylar’s gender confusion. – I am sorry this was one of the worst plot lines in the history of the show. Turning Sylar, who basically was the only cool character left in the show by this point, into some weird Norman Bates type character, who literally took his Mother’s appearance to sort out his new found mommy issues. But unlike Norman Bates whose only power came when in his Mother’s shoes, Sylar had almost everyone’s powers by this point in the game.  I saw this as the writers, who obviously had no idea what to do with the character, and had painted them-selves in a corner if you will at this point. They were trying to give a character with almost god-like powers some form of weakness. But it only seriously de-mascualted the character and made it a little weird to watch. This not only killed all stock I had in the character by making him almost unidentifiable to me and most of the viewing public, who at one point were really rooting for the bad guy. I really wish they would’ve just kept Sylar and Noah together as partners much like Starsky and Hutch, with good cop, bad cop and “Whoops! I used my telekinesis and cut they guy’s head off and steal his powers. “

1. Hiro was  supposed to fight a Dinosaur! This really needs no explanation, I saw a picture of Hiro Nakamura fighting a T-Rex with a samurai sword, and you owed me that, damn it!

Dan, I haven’t even finished reading this yet but I need to gush about Zachary Quinto. Putting him and a kitten on the front of your article was the equivalent of taking the brown bag off of some sort of softcore female nerd porn. You understand that THIS IS THE MAN THAT MADE SPOCK ATTRACTIVE, right?! I’m a little sad because I have a gut feeling he may actually be rooting for the same team as me… Now I’m going to finish reading this.

My problem since the beginning of Season 2 was the inability to commit. When Syler came back, I was done. All good comic books have more than one compelling antagonists. Heroes had the chance to be legendary, and then they brought back the guy they killed last season because they had nothing else. Look at Dexter (another good ‘comic book’ show in my opinion). It would have been a lame copout to have the ice truck killer come back from the dead in season 2. Anyway, I shifted my TV affection from heroes during Season 2 and I don’t think I’ve missed anything.

Umm thanks for successfully barring me from watching Heroes. Ever. Haha, I’ve heard too many bad things and this is just the icing on the cake.

Oh well, I’ll be here waiting for the January return of the best show to grace television since… probably ever: Lost.

I had the exact opposite reaction than you did with the season premiere. I’ll have to explain myself this week.

Oh my goodness! Spock was already attractive, but when he morphed into Zachary Quinto with a kitten…that’s just wrong. You’re making me feel bad about breaking up with Heroes last year.
