Coffee Talk: So, Disney Buys Marvel, What Now?
We’re sure you’ve heard the news already unless you’re paying rent and utilities for the rock you live under. Disney bought Marvel this past week for about $4 billion and the internet has been in an uproar ever since (did you really think we could resist?).
Could this effect your favorite Marvel characters and franchises? Most likely. So, enjoy your Spider-Man while he lasts! All joking aside, Marvel will still hold their 70-year-strong brand and their 5000+ characters will remain largely unaffected in the realm of comic books.
That being said, there are several licensing issues at hand when it comes to Marvel’s film and video game divisions that will take a while to iron out. Will the end result be witnessing Darkwing Duck and Captain America fight evil side-by-side? Not likely, but that’d be badass.
So, loyal readers, are you jumping for joy or already in tears? What do you think are the creative and financial possibilities of this merger? Sound out in the comments section.

I’m actually kind of psyched about the merger, especially when it comes to Marvel’s video game properties.
Crap games like Hannah Montana aside, their ventures into gaming with Pure (awesome), Lumines, and the Kingdom Hearts series are fantastic. Even their movie tie-in games (IE: Cars) are well done.
Marvel, on the other hand, have HORRIBLE games that tie in with their movies. Iron Man? Ugh! Incredible Hulk? BAH!
The combo of a studio that produces quality tie in games with the properties that Marvel holds… well, there are some excellent possibilities.
Can’t wait to see what happens.
I don’t know why there is all this nerd hatred. Creative control over marvel IPs would be largely unchanged I would think unless Disney was hellbent on wasting their 4 billion dollar investment. Marvel is a moneymaker and a strong brand so why mess with it and risk losing out? Thats like buying a ferrari to see if it will blend. bad idea.
The moment I first heard this I wet myself a little. The idea of a largely children oriented company owning my most beloved (and clearly more adult) comic book characters just about got me to finish that “Assassinate Mickey” sign I’ve been working on.
Though, there is hope. Marvel does rake in a large chunk of money each year and Disney would have to be deaf, dumb, and blind to mess with it. But I’m still erring on the side of caution because sometimes, just sometimes… companies buy other companies just to get them out of the way. Now, I dont’ see this happening with Marvel, but if it does, I’m finishing my sign.
