Good News Everyone: Futurama Returns

The voice of Professor Farnsworth saying “Good News, Everyone!” is now stuck in your head. You’re welcome.

I love Futurama. I own the entire series on DVD and I loved all four Futurama movies. In fact, I drove Tim crazy at the New York Comic Con earlier this year, insisting that we watch the world premiere of the fourth and final film. “But Eric, they’re giving away plasma TVs in the next room!” Didn’t care. I needed my dose of Bender.

I heard rumors about Futurama’s triumphant return, then heard rumors about the characters being re-cast. Now, it seems like everything is in order, and the show is set to return with 26 new episodes in 2010. Futurama is the… what, second show to be revamped by Fox after cancelation, due to the demand of the fans? We saw it happen with Family Guy. We’ve seen shows other Fox shows like Firefly become cult hits and find success in feature films.

So can we please bring back Arrested Development? PLEASE? A feature film is on the way, and it’s one of the most popular shows on Hulu. Come on guys.

Anyhow, expect a serious Geekadelphia party in 2010 in honor of the first new episode. I can’t wait.

Thanks to Crunchgear for the tip. Don’t worry, you guys will be invited.

An Evening with George Takei at the Franklin Institute

sulu

Is it just me or has the Franklin Institute become the epicenter for Star Trek on the East Coast this summer? I know the fact that the reboot made $400 million this summer probably hasn’t hurt attendance for their Star Trek: The Exhibition, my only gripe is I wish they could get some of the stars from the new film as well as the getting the classic actors, maybe…  possibly….. Zachary Quinto?

Well, for their next Trek event George Takei best known for his role as Mr. Sulu in the Original Star Trek Television show and theatrical films will be at the Franklin Institute, Thursday, August 20 at 7:00pm for “An Evening with George Takei”. George will be spending the evening talking about Star Trek, meeting fans, signing autographs and taking photos.

Tickets for the event are $25.00 for public ($20.00 for members) and include a Q & A with George Takei followed by a meet and greet; a glossy photo and as an added bonus – admission to Star Trek: The Exhibition after 5pm. To purchase tickets, please call 215-448-1254.

8-Bit & Beyond @ Brave New Worlds

Art by Julio Ossa / Design by Matt Cavanaugh

At the last First Friday event at Brave New Worlds, the city’s favorite comic shop hosted The Autumn Society’s Ode to the Golden Age of Comics, which featured a wealth of classic comic era inspired art. While there, I turned to several of my friends, and lamented on how I’d love to see a video game inspired gallery from Philly’s talented art collective.

Well, someone must have heard me (was it you, Chogrin?) because this Friday, the Autumn Society presents 8-Bit & Beyond, and I couldn’t be more excited. Especially after seeing this amazing Castle Crashers piece. I’m showing up early to purchase that jawn. Awesome.

This also marks the last art show of the summer, so come on out. It’s your last chance to score some art from some of Philly’s best and brightest illustrators. The event is even going to feature live music from Doctor Octoroc. Nothing like rockin’ out to some chiptunes.

Want to see more of the work on display? Score a sneak peak here. I can’t wait.

Kick Out The Jams, Mothersnugger!

My appetite for weird infomercials is currently satisfied. But Bianca, that’s impossible! You love way too many weird things for that to ever happen! No, man, I’ve met my match. What ever do you mean, Bianca? I mean that my favorite as-seen-on-tv novelty is baaaaa-aack and it’s somehow weirder than it was before.

Um, so the snuggie: everyone knows what it is. If you don’t, you must be one dedicated hermit simply because this …thing has swept through suburban pop culture like an STD at a frat house. I don’t have cable and I know what it is and shit! I’m pretty sure the Amish have heard about it.

So, according to my sources, there are new snuggies on the street (Snugglette and the Snuggie for Dogs) and they want to embarrass your kids and your pet because, hey– your family wasn’t already creepy enough!  They also have football snuggies for the Monday night game because your son wants his ass kicked.

Videos after the jump!

MakePhilly Water Rocket BBQ: This Sunday!

This Sunday, the MakePhilly folks are hosting their third annual Water Rocket BBQ. They’re inviting you to come on out, have some BBQ, and pimp out your own custom water rocket in Fairmount Park.

There’s a great tutorial up on Instructables on how to make a soda bottle rocket. It also happens to have an excellent paint job. This water rocket is also a solid pick.

The Geekadelphia crew will be on the scene with some awesome, custom painted rockets. Friendly competition with the regulars? Possibly. Loud swearing and punches dealt between myself and Hive 76? Definitely.

Head over to the MakePhilly website to RSVP for the event. It’ll be fun, promise.

Coder Girl Music Video, an ode to geek girls everywhere

Honestly I hadn’t planned on posting this today this today, but after I watched it I couldn’t resist.  I mean it’s a rap song about something we here at Geekadelphia can all appreciate, geek girls that code.  How freakin cool is that?  The video I thought was pretty funny as well, with her cracking his PSP and telling him to get her a sandwhich(you can tell who rules the roost in this relationship). That and she has a MacBook as well which is definitely going to get you points in my book. You can check out the artist site where he already had “i <3 coder girl” shirts for sale.

Coffee Talk: How Do You Like Your Multiplayer?

uh136_sonic2

My fondest memories of my gaming youth weren’t of beating Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with all seven Chaos Emeralds single handed, but with my friends. Some argue that video games are better when you can enjoy them with friends or family and Edward Stern of Brink developer Splash Damage seems to agree. Recently in an interview with Gamasutra, Stern asks an important (albeit whiny) question: “Why are multiplayer gamers a second class citizen?”

Stern elaborates that the idea of a completely solitary game experience (with a dash of multiplayer for good measure) is dated and the future for games is in social integration, which I can totally agree with (why do you think I play so much World of Warcraft?), but what if some gamers want the option to turn themselves off to the world? For many, that could be the reason they play video games in the first place. Well, this leads us to today’s questions.

Firstly, do you agree with Stern’s question? For developers and gamers alike, does multiplayer truly take a back seat to the single player experience? How do you like your multiplayer features tied in with your games (i.e. either options or integration)? Do you have an idea for the ultimate multiplayer experience? Let this beautifully geeky city know your brilliant ideas in the comments section!
