I personally really enjoyed Doom as a movie mostly because it wasn't really based on the game. I mean sure it had the same name and the whole Mars thing but at that point all similarities stopped. Instead of saying that it is based on Doom 3 i would say that the writers had heard of the plot of the game and had seen pictures of the monsters and then turned it into a passable action movie. Of course as with all movies there was room for improvment but if you think about the movie as being inspired by the game rather than based on the game then it becomes a little easier to watch.

This list was Movies that were based on video games. Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever was a film first technically, although the video game was actually based on an early draft of the script. Which is why it might have predated the film.

Oh my lord, I can't believe no one put Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever up here!

Can we forget the 00% rating on Rotten Tomatoes?

At least with Super Mario Bros., they technically stuck to the source material. You have to give them credit for that, despite the strange movie that came out of it.

I have to say that while I like the list, Wing Commander definitely should have been on there. For those of us that had played the games and were waiting for a decent game to movie adaptation, it was the worst possible outcome. When Chris Roberts comes out boasting how inexpensively he made the movie, you know you're in trouble. Shortly thereafter the games went to hell too...

I happened to have loved Wing Commander, but then again I never played the game beforehand; so I was not disappointed by anything.

I refused to see Super Mario Brothers, nor any of the other crapfests, but Doom the movie was certainly better than Doom the game. That said, I found it predictable; that is, I could have written the whole thing in my sleep.

I actually thought Doom was okay, maybe just because I expected it to be completely awful and it ended up being sort of a generic action movie with one unexpected twist. And the "first person" scene actually made sense in the context of the plot! It was at least as good as the first Mortal Kombat movie, I thought. (But I agree that the second was wretched. "Sub zero! But you died in the first movie!" "No, that was my brother!")
