It’s the summer and other than bad blockbusters movies, we have 3 months of bad television while all the good shows are on break. So, if you your looking for something good to watch, BBC America will be airing the 5 episode miniseries event Torchwood: Children of Earth every day this week starting on Monday at 9:00 pm and continuing through to the finale on Friday at 9:00 pm. This 5 part miniseries is meant to be season 3 for this show, and it’s debut on the prestigious BBC One in England.  Not bad for a spin-off of Doctor Who that started out its life on BBC Three, I liken it to show going from FOX to NBC if that makes any sense. Children of Earth is less like a season of television and more like a 5 hour feature film. I compare it to a film because everything in this production puts most American Sci-Fi television with the exception of Battlestar Galactica to shame.

Don’t let the fact that this is not only a spin-off of well established series but the third season scare you off from checking this out. While the show does make nods to Doctor Who and its past season the show is meant to be an entry point for the franchise making it fairly accessible to those not indoctrinated into the Doctor Who universe.

Torchwood follows the adventures and activities of the Torchwood Institute, which is led by Captain Jack Harkness played by John Barrowman. It’s a bit like the X-Files but aliens are real and sort of part of everyday life to a certain point. In this universe Torchwood are the ones, who when the aliens get out of hand they put them back in their place. This is after all England.

Captain Jack started out as a character on Doctor Who, but was such a great character, that when they said they wanted to do a spin-off they had to have him on board. Captain Jack’s claim to fame is that he can not die. He got this strange ability in the new season 1 finale of Doctor Who and if you ask me, they have put this to full use on Torchwood. Unlike Doctor Who Torchwood is definitely aimed at the adult audience and not afraid to be dark at times. This is a great series and the Children of Earth Miniseries is some of the best television I have seen since the end of Battlestar Galactica(Yes I liked it). So if your a hard core Doctor Who fan or someone looking for a gateway drug into the Who universe I highly suggest you check this great miniseries out.

Torchwood is absolutely fantastic. I have both of the first two seasons on DVD. They never get old. The stories are great, and the characters are complex.

The new miniseries was INCREDIBLE. It’s definitely not a little kid’s Who show.

Can’t wait for Children of Earth! I watched an interview with Gwen who stated that a 4th Series is weighted on the viewership of this series 3. Let’s help make it happen! Watch it! BBCA HD is also premiering on July 20th – only wish we knew if it would be available on Comcast in the area the same day!

    “This is England after all.”

Actually, Torchwood takes place in Wales. ;) If you don’t think that matters just call a Canadian an American!

I know its so small a detail but I used to always have to correct people who thought the “Cylons” were aliens on BSG!

Torchwood is a great show, highly recommend.
