Cool Skull T-Shirt Made From Mac Keyboards

key_skull_mock

This has to be one of the coolest and most original shirts I have seen in a while. It actually somehow is not only completely bad-ass but insanely geeky at the same time, which is pretty hard to pull off and this shirt does it well. The shirt is by Ruby Red who is also the mastermind behind the AT-AT Anatomy shirt that Eric previously wrote about in a earlier post.

What he did this time was he took the white keys from an extended white Mac keyboard and the black keys from the original iMac (the one with the half sized F keys) and used them to make a picture of a skull. From the outset this does look a bit 8-bit but upon further inspection your geek cred will rise exponentially. Get it here for the small sum of $26.13.

More pics after the jump.

8static June is Saturday

Nullsleep rocking 8static
8static June is this Saturday, at the usual place. This month Tonylight is in from Italy, and he’ll be wrapping up the night with his unique style (warning: link contains hipsters and geeks dancing). Of course, before you get that far, you’ll have heard A_Rival from LA, Chromix out of NYC, and our own Cheap Dinosaurs. And maybe (just maybe) you might find yourself dancing.

If just watching isn’t enough for you, show up at 7:00 for a free workshop on glitchNES (open source circuit bending software) with it’s creator, NO CARRIER (Don Miller) . The software causes NES graphical glitches similar to hardware circuit-bending. It can be abused to create really stunning patterns and effects.

Daniel Craig is Now A Popsicle

Eat your heart George Lazenby!  British women apparently love Daniel Craig so much, that for a limited time, food maker Del Monte will sell James Bond popsicles. Out of all the scenes from Casino Royale they chose Daniel Craig in his speedo. The popsicle stick’s unfortunate placement doesn’t help things at all. You can mutilate Daniel Craig in three flavors; blueberry, cranberry, and pomegranate. Unfortunately, these can only be purchased in the UK, but could you really eat something that has a stare so intense it can look into your soul? There are so many things that are wrong with this.

Green Lantern Fan Made Trailer: Awesome

Make no mistake, we’re fans of Firefly, and therefore, adore Nathan Fillion. Chris was swooning over him just recently, and I swoon over him everyday, thanks to my life size cutout Serenity promo… but, perhaps I’ve said too much.

That being said, behold, this amazing fanmade trailer for The Green Lantern, starring Nathan Fillion in the title role. Alas, the role actually belongs to Bradley Cooper who you might remember from Alias. Say it with me now… lamesauce.

There are pieces from a number of movies in this, including Serenity, Planet of the Apes, Stardust, Galaxy Quest, Star Trek, Iron Man, as well as clips from the trailers for GI Joe, Terminator Salvation, and Star Trek. There’s even a cut scene from Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe in here. Visit the video’s YouTube page for the full list.

Enjoy! Thanks to Erich for the link!

The Doctor Who Easter Special Coming to Blu-ray

who

Just announced BBC/Warner Bros. will be releasing the Doctor Who Easter Special:Planet of the Dead on Blu-ray on July 28. This was the first of four special episodes leading up to David Tennant’s eventual passing of the mantle of Dr. Who to newcomer Matt Smith, ending Tennant’s 5 year run as one of the most popular Doctors in the show’s history.

This special that was aired on April, 11 2009 was the first episode of Dr. Who to be filmed completely in HD, the disc will be appropriately mastered in 1080p with only a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack. The only extras on the disc sadly will be a 60 minute Doctor Who: Confidential, I somehow sense a double dip in the future knowing that a commentary was recorded for the original BBC broadcast. But for 13.99 on Amazon this is a bargain priced BBC video release. Pre-order it here.

Mass Effect 2′s E3 Trailer Puts A Big, Stupid Grin On My Face

Someone over at BioWare must have really dug the Terminator: Salvation trailer that used Nine Inch Nails’ “The Day the World Went Away,” because the new Mass Effect 2 trailer from E3 is torn from the very same page. It proves that ambient rock music and science fiction footage make a great combination, and caused my nerd heart swoon.

Granted, I’m a huge fan of the first Mass Effect, even with all its imperfections. I couldn’t stand how plain jane the characters were, and piloting the Mako is seriously one of the worst video game experiences I’ve ever had. But despite these flaws, Mass Effect remains one of my favorite Role Playing Games, and I’ve been jonesin’ for more adventures with Commander Shepard.

If BioWare takes care of the aforementioned issues, then Mass Effect 2 will be brain-meltingly awesome. No doubt. In the meanwhile, I’ll just go ahead and watch this trailer again and again. And again.

asop-80s-pop-show-poster-by-chogrinfinalsm

Another First Friday, another new gallery showing at Brave New Worlds. This month, pop culture of the 80′s. Everything ranging from Thundercats and Transformers, to Back to the Future and Ghostbusters. The 80′s to put it bluntly, were awesome!  That is why the 80′s is this month’s theme for the Autumn Society of Illustrators. Some of the pieces that I have seen are incredible and I can’t wait to see all of them this Friday. Hopefully you guys can make it down to Old City and check out these drawings in person.  After the jump are a few illustrations from Tom Whalen, Pat Kinsella, and Minder Singh. The promotional art above was done by Chogrin.  So come on down to Brave New Worlds this friday at 6pm to check out this cool exhibit!

A Boy & His Blob: Screenshots Make Me Want a Wii Again

Let me start of by saying that I’ve been epically disappointed by every single game I’ve picked up for the Nintendo Wii. It seems like every game that looks awesome, ends up being horrible. After playing Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of a New World (which I preordered), I gave up. I put the Wii up on eBay with my six or seven equally craptastic games (I’m looking at you, Sim City Creator), and gave up on the system forever.

However, I’ve been reading a lot about Nintendo’s upcoming Boy & His Blob remake, and I’ve gotta say, it’s making me want to pick up a Wii again.

The screenshots are nothing short of beautiful. The hand drawn characters and backgrounds… just wow. I’ve selected some of my favorite screenshots so far and placed them after the jump. Have a look. They are really quite lovely.

This of course, begs the question… will the game actually be good? What do you think?

Dan Interviews Jesse from Exhumed Films

11

If you’re into horror movies and you live in the Philadelphia area you have no doubt heard of Exhumed Films. If you haven’t let me fill you in about theses guys. In this day and age of remakes, re-imaginings and countless obligatory sequels it’s nice sometimes to see movies from a different time, a simpler time, where practical effects were the standard, and where politically correctness was an option and not a rule. Exhumed films is an organization that holds double bill screenings throughout the year at the International House of vintage horror and cult films on 35mm, none of this digitally projected stuff here all films are shown in their damaged and worn celluloid glory. It’s that grindhouse experience but without the fear of a going to some of the theaters that were showing those films back in the day.

With normal admission at $10 for two films the screenings are almost like mini conventions with Diabolik DVD in attendance selling DVDs at every one, and sometimes other various vendors stopping in on occasion. Diabolik DVD is in my opinion on of the best and most reliable places to pick up rare and import horror and cult DVDs, unlike eBay where your hit with insane shipping prices and sometimes getting bootleg low quality DVDs. I have found quite a few treasures on Diabolik over the years like my Region 2: 6 DVD Grindhouse box set, one thing I have found is if you don’t pick it when it’s in stock you never know when you’ll see it again . The genesis of this interview is when I got the gig to write for Geekadelphia I wanted to spread the good word about some of my favorite things to do in the city and the Exhumed films screenings were at the top of my list. So here is my interview with Jesse from Exhumed Films and Diabolik DVD.

Check out the interview after the Jump

Marvel Comics is Proud to Introduce Obama’s… Dog?

bo-obama-pet-avenger1

You heard it here (hopefully) first, folks. Not only has Obama himself swung amongst the skyscrapers of New York with Spider-Man, but the first man’s best friend, Bo Obama, will be fighting evil with Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers.

Comic Book Resources reports that Bo, the Obama family’s Portugese Water Dog, will be appearing in issue #4 of Marvel’s Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers, which is scheduled for release on August 12. MSNBC was able to ask the series’ writer, Chris Eliopoulos, what his inspiration was for including Bo Obama in issue #4.

“It seemed so appropriate that we jumped on the bandwagon,” Eliopoulos explains. We guess comic book writers aren’t known for being discreet.

Coffee Talk: Everyone Loves Vidya Game Tunes

72_full_chrono_trigger

This is exactly what we would like to discuss this fine Monday morning: quality video game music. I know, the topic is a bit light, but with everyone’s E3 anxieties coming to a boiling point it’s time our brains had a break.

Personally, my favorite collection of video game tracks is the Chrono Trigger soundtrack and its many covers, remixes and genre treatments.  You may call it bias, but I call it dedication. A few other favorites include djpretzel’s (along with several others’) work over at OC Remix and Nobuo Uematsu’s The Black Mages.

So, I pose this question to you, loyal readers: What is your favorite video game music? It could be a particular track from a game (ahem, see above), a video game music cover band or maybe a particular composer/DJ. Let us know what your favorite tunes are in the coment box!
