If there was a person I interviewed this weekend that least embodied their Battlestar Galactica Counterpart that would have to be Michael Hogan, who played the drunken curmudgeon Saul Tigh on the show. A Canadian actor as well, Michael had done various television and movies prior to landing his role on Battlestar Galactica. A bit on the quiet side but super friendly in person the first thing you notice about the man is his voice. Full of energy and upbeat, this voice I couldn’t recall hearing on the show and I think that shows how hard he had to work to play the tortured second in command to Adama who eventually found out he was the thing he hated most.

I have to say Saul was one of my favorite characters on the show and one I rooted for even when I found out he was supposed to be the enemy. He brought a certain balance to Adama, because of their friendship it rounded the character of Adama out quite well, that and their fighting like an old married couple was one of my favorite parts of the show. I still long for the day when Michael Bay bored with giant robots, announces his next film will be a epic space buddy cop movie starring Michael Hogan and Edward James Olmos. Hey, it could happen.

Check out the interview after the jump.

1.How did you get the role of Saul Tigh on Battlestar Galactica?

Well I almost didn’t audition for the role because Battlestar Galactica, I hadn’t seen the series, the original one. I might have seen a couple of frames of it on television, and playing a military guy, I wasn’t sure about it. But I don’t know what was first but Michael Rymer being the director, or Edward James Olmos playing the lead, I thought there might be something to this. So I did audition and got the role.

2.Did you have any say over the character of Saul Tigh and how he developed over the course of the show?

Yeah, very much so. Because at the beginning, they had no idea what they were going to do with Saul Tigh.  Michael Rymer, being the director, he loves working with actors. So it was a cooperative effort and we developed the character of Saul Tigh together.

3. Did you think when you started playing Saul that he would eventually become one of the main chick magnets of the show giving Baltar a run for his money?

No, I had absolutely no idea that I would become the chick magnet that I became.  I guess that was because of the fans, the fans probably requested that I get all these women.  Who would have thought the old bald guy would get more women.  It must have been the eyepatch – it certainly wasn’t me.

4.What was your favorite part of playing the role of Saul Tigh?

Flashbacks. I loved doing flashbacks because I had two eyes and I could laugh. So that would be my favorite part of it.

5. My final question, and one the readers want to know who would win in a fight between Saul and Adama?

Oh I would win.  Now go ask him that.

We will tomorrow.
