Just announced BBC/Warner Bros. will be releasing the Doctor Who Easter Special:Planet of the Dead on Blu-ray on July 28. This was the first of four special episodes leading up to David Tennant’s eventual passing of the mantle of Dr. Who to newcomer Matt Smith, ending Tennant’s 5 year run as one of the most popular Doctors in the show’s history.
This special that was aired on April, 11 2009 was the first episode of Dr. Who to be filmed completely in HD, the disc will be appropriately mastered in 1080p with only a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack. The only extras on the disc sadly will be a 60 minute Doctor Who: Confidential, I somehow sense a double dip in the future knowing that a commentary was recorded for the original BBC broadcast. But for 13.99 on Amazon this is a bargain priced BBC video release. Pre-order it here.
