Jesse Moynihan’s Forming: A Hilarious Epic Fantasy

Jesse Moynihan’s Forming – Selection From Comic #5

Jesse Moynihan. Those of you who read the Philly Weekly might remember him from his surreal humor comic strip Kime Agine. It ran in the Weekly for a solid year and a half, and you can read all the archived comics on Jesse’s official website and Walrus Comix. When he isn’t busy creating hilarious comics, he plays guitar and violin in the local Philly group, Make A Rising.

Jesse recently reached out to Geek to talk about his new project, Forming. When Kime Agine finished up its run in the Weekly, he started working on Forming, an epic fantasy / comedy rewrite of human history.

Give it a read, it’s definitely worth your time. Keep it up Jesse!

Big Trouble in Little China Extended! Comes to Blu-Ray

bigtrouble0511092

You know I was actually just watching this on G4 earlier this week and realized how this literally has to be one of the greatest movies of all time. It’s one of those movies that whenever it’s on, is a good time to watch it in my book and literally has to be constantly playing on television somewhere in the world at any give time of the day.  It’s Big Trouble in Little China and it ignited quite a few passions in my life John Carpenter, B-Movies and Kung-Fu and as most people can attest I have never been quite the same.

If you haven’t seen it and I can’t think of any self respecting movie geek that hasn’t it’s the story of Jack Burton(Kurt Russell), truck driver and master of the one liners who gets caught up in an epic struggle in the underground of San Francisco’s Chinatown. He does this when his friend’s girlfriend is kidnapped by kung-fu masters, with the power of the elements who serve a 2000-year-old ancient sorcerer named Lo Pan. Needless to say there is epic kung-fu battles, cheesy dialog and some really awesome monsters after all this is the director who gave us such great films as Escape from New York, They Live and Halloween.

Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance Trailer

If your a fan of anime no doubt you’ve heard of, or seen Neon Genesis Evangelion. If you haven’t I highly suggest you do. This epic mecha but not quite mecha, series animated by Gainax whom you might remember as the studio behind Gurren Lagann (one of the best mecha anime since Evangelion) and the directorial debut by the now legendary anime and live-action director Hideaki Anno. The official website has posted a new trailer for the second film in a four film series retelling the original anime with new characters and better animation, Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance. I am super excited about this because of the new elements they are adding which will hopefully button-up the story a little better than the first movies did and let Eva finally rest in peace. The film will open in Japan on June 27.

FUNimation has already announced it has the rights to the first film titled Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone and plans to release it later this year. FUNimation recently had a showing of the first film in Washington DC and people were very upset at the quality of the US transfer that was shown hopefully that will change when it premieres on dvd and hopefully Blu-ray. We definitely need more good anime on Blu-ray. Check out the trailer after the jump.

Coffee Talk: Have Games Lost Originality?

jd_top_inv_tomohiro

Terribly sorry for the tardiness, guys and gals. Now, on with this week’s topic. USA Today’s Game Hunters recently spoke with Tomohiro Nishikado, creator of the Space Invaders series, about the newly released Space Invaders Extreme for Xbox Live Arcade, what inspired his original creation and (most importantly) the current state of video games.

Mr. Nishikado thinks, “the focus on unique concepts and gameplay has waned with the evolution of technology.” “It seems there is an increase of replicated gameplay formats and concepts, and people are growing tired of playing the same thing,” Nishikado elaborates. Let’s finish our discussion after the break.

Starfleet Uniforms vs The Wiggles

these guys...

Simply put: I’m really glad costuming made the revised original Starfleet uniforms so damn awesome…

because if they didn’t… The new cast could resemble The Wiggles.

And that’s nothin’ to sing or dance about.

...these guys.

AND GENE RODDENBERRY WOULD ROLL IN HIS GRAVE.

On an estrogen-powered note, and since I don’t think any of the boys will, I would like to compliment

Zachary Quinto for making Spock really, really …hot?!

The Retro NES USB Controller From ThinkGeek Reviewed

nes1

A week or two ago I wrote about this item, and those great guys over at ThinkGeek were more than happy to put one in my hot little hands, so I could tell you all about it. This is one of those items with the wisdom of the internet, just seemed like a no brainer to me. I mean who hasn’t installed an emulator on their computer? Not only that but when you play an emulator on your computer it’s just not the same you either use a keyboard or a usb controller to play. Which most of these usb computer “game pads” seem like Playstation design concept rejects or they made it as close as possible to the Playstation controller but different enough so they wouldn’t be sued. The problem with that is most people I know playing emulators are retro fans and they are playing the old school games and they want that old school feel.

The retro usb NES controller ThinkGeek is selling is a very faithful replica of the original controllers that came with the original Nintendo Entertainment System. The only thing that really sets it apart when you first see it is the Nintendo logo is replaced by the Retrolink one. There is another smaller difference I noticed right away when I held it, the plastic felt slightly different compared to the original. It just feels a little off to those of us that spent hours with that controller in our hands trying to beat Battletoads or Double Dragon. More retro goodness after the jump.

A Minute With An Extraordinary Gamer: Tristan “Renkou” Caliboso

renkou1

During a recent late night raiding binge in World of Warcraft with the Conclave of Shadows guild on the Magtheridon server, I meet a player (an exceptional Mage at that) who calls himself Renkou. Amidst slaying the undead minions of the Lich King, the two of us begin small talk. As the raid was comes to a close (hours later), Renknou and I compliment one another on our “1337 skillz” when a raid member interjects claiming Renkou is a good player, “for having no limbs.”

It’s difficult to react to a joke like this other than in silence and with a bit of skepticism (this is the internet). Renkou jokingly agrees with his fellow guild member, but after redirecting me to his YouTube channel, consider me convinced and amazed. Renkou, or 23-year-old, Chicago native Tristan Caliboso, was born with congenital limb loss and claims to have been playing video games since age two. Tristan recently took to the time with us to explain how he not only plays games, but how he has joined competitive gaming communities despite his disability. Find out what he had to say after the break.

Was Dollhouse Doomed Before It Even Began?

While the season finale of Dollhouse airs tonight, everyone is trying to save Castle, Sarah Connor ,and Chuck… but where are the people trying to save Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse?

Dollhouse was troubled from the very beginning. With 2 pilots ultimately shot and a very rough start story wise as well. The second pilot was apparently shot to appease Fox execs who were not happy with how the story started and wanted numerous changes made to story and pacing. Before the show even started there were rumors of cancellation before the first episode even aired, thanks to the tumultuous relationship Whedon had with Fox previously with his show Firefly.

Blizzard Opens Starcraft II Beta Opt-In, Internet Zergs Battle.net

starcraft2

The wait is over, RTS fans. Joystiq recently reported that Blizzard (a little developer from Irvine, California) has just opened the beta opt-in for their long (and we mean long) awaited sequel to Starcraft. It’s been 11 years, which is almost as long as we have been waiting for Starcraft: Ghost, so any Starcraft II news is good news at this point.

You can head over to the new Battle.net, make a new account or update your existing one, download the application program and wait for an invitation. What does the program do exactly? Why, it scans your system specifications and sends them to Blizzard, of course (oh, joy)!

It’s safe to assume that the selection process is based upon system specs, but we don’t know for sure. Maybe selection is based on how loyal a customer you have been (please, for all that is holy). I can’t speak for the rest of the Geekadelphia team, but my laptop isn’t the fanciest gaming rig. My little HP could run Starcraft II… I promise!

Stoya Stars in Philly Short

stoyaandtrov

Tony Trov and Johnny Zito, creators of Black Cherry Bombshells, are not only making waves in the comics world, but they are also planning to take over the film world as well.  The guys are taking part in the 48 hour Film Festival with their short film “Kingpin of Pain” which centers around a ” tournament of warriors fighting over a sword of immortal power.” The film was written in 4 hours and shot in 14 hours. That’s pretty impressive. More impressive is the casting of adult film star Stoya (the link is her twitter account) as the villain Kamikaze SheGun 5000. Says the film’s press release:

Stoya™ is original, outrageous, and all natural. With striking features and porcelain skin, this tall and slender 22-year-old beauty is chipping away at the common misconceptions regarding the adult industry and sexual perceptions as a whole. Stoya’s youthful, pristine body envelops an old soul and intellectual mind. She is a rare combination of book and street smarts. In 2008 and 2009 Stoya achieved a unanimous sweep of best new performer awards, including the coveted AVN Best New Starlet and XBIZ New Starlet of the Year.

If you’re interested in seeing the finished product, “King of Pain” will premiere at 9pm Monday, May 11th at The International House 3701 Chestnut Street.
