Doom Classic Graces the iPhone

picture-12

I am of the strict school of thought that a platform has not truly arrived until someone has a working port of Doom running on it, this goes for all things electronic from iPods to toasters. One gadget that has sadly been off that list up until recently is the Apple iPhone which is quickly becoming quite the gaming platform nowadays.

John Carmack of id software himself, has announced they are porting Doom or Doom classic as they are calling it to the iPhone and iPod Touch. Knowing id, this is not just just going to be a bare bones port release we are getting some real features with this game. With remasterd sound effects, an online multi-player via wifi with bluetooth support for multi-player coming soon this sounds like the next must have app for your iPhone. One thing they are not updating in this release is the graphics, apparently the updated graphics for their Wolfenstein 3D port “ruined the old-school look and feel”. It’s nearing the end of its run in testing and they are looking for a June release, and I honestly can’t wait to deathmatch against the wife while we’re in the doctor’s office. Check out the much more detailed blog post by id here.

Ah, the 1800′s. A simpler time of fear, paranoia, and exaggeration.

Philadelphians, your RIGHTS are being invaded! Regardless of your interests or the lives of your little ones, the Camden and Amboy… are laying a LOCOMOTIVE RAIL ROAD… to the ruin of your trade, annihalation of your rights. Will you permit this or do you consent to be a suburb of New York.

You may commence ROFLing in 3… 2… 1… wait a minute.

Broad Street connecting to the Trenton Railroad? Is that the SEPTA?!

Wow. Maybe I shouldn’t judge these folks too harshly. Dreadful causality, indeed.

Monkey Island Coming to XBox Live?

Oh my God. Jenn Frank, thank you for posting this on your always lovely blog.

From writer Bob Mackey: “The only evidence we have comes from a German USK rating board screen capture over at GamerBytes, but the rating process is how the evidence of most upcoming game releases seems to get leaked these days.” A rumor, but a tasty one!

The tastiest of rumors!

Domo-kun Comes to 7-11!

domojump1

In one of those rare moments of a promotion that actually makes sense. 7-11 America my favorite supplier of all things sugary and sweet, has teamed with Dark Horse Comics and Tokyopop to launch a Domo-branded Slurpee drink during a six-week promotional campaign starting October 1st.  The promotion is aimed to generate awareness for America’s first Domo DVD, which will contain the online shorts, the Japanese commercials, and other extras.

If you have been anywhere near the anime section in Suncoast Pictures, FYE or any retailer that sells anime or manga, you have no doubt gazed upon the glorious visage that is Domo-Kun. Domo-Kun started life as the mascot of Japan’s NHK television station, and due to some promo shorts made for the station that warmed the hearts of Otaku everywhere he became an internet phenomenon. You might have also seen him in commercials and shorts for Target and Nickelodeon.

Hollywood remakes Flight of the Navigator, admits it’s out of ideas

flightofnavigatorpost

I would really love to sit in on some of those meetings they have in Hollywood, you know the ones that seem to always end in the announcement of yet another sequel, or a completely unnecessary remake of a perfectly good film. Recently Disney announced that they will be remaking Flight of the Navigator. I would have to put Flight of the Navigator up there with The Wizard, Transformers the Movie(The Animated One) and The Monster Squad as some of my all time favorite childhood movies.

ROACH Wreaks Havoc On Real Life Superheroes

jointoday_lairtemp

It should come as no surprise that if you have a group of heroes, there will eventually be a group of villains to ruin the day. It’s just a fact of life really. Otherwise, what would we need heroes for?  Which is why it shouldn’t come as a shock that the World Super Hero Registry has found it’s nemesis in ROACH (The Ruthless Organization Against Citizen Heroes) .  Their goal? World domination of course. Yet like any budding group of villainy, you have to start small. The group is lead by the masked menace known as The Potentate.  Says The Potentate:

These Superheroes were content on giving sandwiches to the homeless, “inspiring” children, and if they are lucky the occasional citizen’s arrest. Hardly super activites. The Potentate felt that one could not be a Superhero without a Super-villain as a foil, and thus The Potentate shouldered the burden of lighting the torch that will ultimately burn the straw houses of heroism to the ground.

Wow. That is evil. Super-evil if you ask me.  The ROACH website includes a list of villains, as well as missions for it’s members. They also have a recruitment video! So far their are only two missions, one of which is buying a T-Shirt, but the other one I found to be hilarious:

Find a local theater showing a summer Blockbuster that has a long line out front. In whatever way possible, ruin the film for that line. You may need to see the film first, so if you yourself are in line and see a fellow ROACH leaving, you may want to cover your ears.

This is what the Joker should have done in The Dark Knight! It’s obvious that the guys behind this site are having a bit of fun at the expense of their righteous counter-parts. However, this did get me thinking if there are any Superheroes in the City of Brotherly Love?

Nathan Drake Channels Nathan Fillion in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

1UP posted this video on Game Videos several days ago, yet somehow it wasn’t until this morning, while watching the latest episode of CoOp, that I came across it. Maybe that’s because I don’t own a PlayStation 3 — and not because I don’t want to, but because like most writers I am dirt poor. But I am a huge fan of Naughty Dog Studios, and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune is the easily the game I am most excited to play when I finally do pick up a PS3. So it’s no surprise that the recent string of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves media is of particular interest to me. I’ve been gobbling up all I can, and after watching this trailer let me tell you:

This game looks amazing.

Uncharted is probably the closest I’ll ever come to playing as Malcolm Reynolds in a video game, mostly due to how much the protagonist, Nathan Drake (voiced by Nolan North), manages to channel the essence of Nathan Fillion as Malcolm Reynolds. What’s more, Greg Edmonson — the man responsible for the music from Firefly — scored Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, which really helps complete the whole Firefly vibe. All that’s missing is an insect/bird-shaped spaceship and Summer Glau going “monkey shit at the wrong word.”

My unhealthy love for Firefly/Serenity aside, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves boasts slick animation, great voice acting, and diverse gameplay — all of which are evident in this trailer. In less than six minutes, we see Nathan Drake engage in bone-shattering hand-to-hand combat, explosive firefights, and acrophobia-inducing exploration.

Yeah, I’ll be splurging for a PlayStation 3 in time to play this game.

Adrian Tomine Comes to Philly

32stories

You know I consider myself quite the fan of comic books, but I have a dark secret I am not a fan of superhero comics. I do happen to enjoy the occasional musclebound do-gooder saving the day and giving the bad-guy a taste of his own medicine. But in the comic boom of the mid 90s I lost the need to buy sometimes 3-4 different titles to follow one story-line. I know that is part of the reason the comic industry took a hit because of that mentality, that and people burned after the Death of Superman debacle.

The comics I tend to read are independent ones, and those usually seem to venture outside of the spandex clad crime fighter cliché. One book that I think exemplifies this is Optic Nerve by Adrian Tomine. Each issue of Optic Nerve is collection of short stories that has been ongoing since 1995. If I had to try to explain Optic Nerve I would have to say the stories are not fantastic but very rooted in reality, they are always thoughtful and at times moving. The art is simple and definitely compliments the stories

Adrian will be in Philadelphia on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at 7:30PM at the Central Library in support of A Drifting Life, a collection of graphic novelist Yoshihiro Tatsumi’s work which Adrian edited and designed the new release of. I would say if your into comic and looking for something a little different you should really check this event out I know I will be there hopefully to get some of my trades signed. Reenact Scenes from Halo 3 and Terrorize Cats with Remote-Controlled UNSC Vehicles

Remote Control Mongoose with Master Chief

BigBadToyStore.com is taking preorders for three remote-controlled toy replicas of UNSC vehicles from Halo 3: the Mongoose (pictured above), the Warthog, and the Hornet. The toys are being manufactured by N K O K, and are priced at $23.99 for the Mongoose and Warthog, while the Hornet costs $38.99. According to BigBadToyStore’s product description, the remote-controlled Hornet actually flies, which may explain its heftier price tag. It also seems to be the most popular of the three vehicles, as it’s already sold out.

If you ask me, there’s a ton of fun to be had with these vehicles. Halo 3 fans who own Covenant dolls action figures can play “Covenant Bowling,” a little game I just came up with while writing this post. Just set up a handful of Covenant warriors at the bottom of a staircase, place the remote-controlled Halo 3 vehicle of your choice at the top of the stairs, rev up the engine for show, then punch it.

When “Covenant Bowling” grows old, use these vehicles to terrorize cats, small dogs, or other diminutive household pets. Just be sure to equip your pet with that Master Chief “Cat Helmet” that came with the Halo 3 Legendary Edition. I’m not advocating the mistreatment of animals — I don’t need PETA coming down on me.

Coffee Talk: Memorial Day Weekend Hangover Edition

hangover-cat

Good morn — er, afternoon Geekadelphians. We’re sure you’re all feeling just wonderful on this beautiful Memorial Day and most likely woke up minutes ago. Since the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is just a week away, let the rampant speculation and dreaming begin! Now, we’re sure you know of some rumors floating around involving this year’s E3, but let’s take a look at a few others, eh?

Just last week a video leaked to Playstation Lifestyle which the site claims is Team Ico’s next project for the PS3. It could be safe to dream assume that we’ll hear more on this next week, as just about everyone who has played either Ico or Shadow of the Colossus is craving for more.

Also, 1UP.com recently revealed what they believe will be Sony’s next handheld, the PSP Go! Hopefully 1UP’s sources aren’t terribly reliable as ditching physical media (that means no more UMD’s, kids) altogether for a download-only business model probably isn’t the best strategy.

So after looking at some other (somewhat Sony-centric) rumors running amok, what predictions do you have for E3 2009? Maybe you have heard things from the grapevine that we haven’t. Well, don’t keep us in the dark and spill the beans in the comment box!

Snow Descends Upon Downtown Los Angeles

Three Characters from Final Fantasy XIII Overlook Downtown L.A.

Snow from Square Enix’s upcoming RPG epic, Final Fantasy XIII, that is. Even though E3 is still a week away, and the game itself won’t hit shelves until 2010 (at least, according to Snow’s giant ad), Square Enix has wasted no time getting the inevitable E3 hype train in motion through literally the biggest means available to them. According to the Square Enix Members Blog, these three teaser images stand 124-ft tall on the corner of Figueroa Street and Olympic Boulevard in Downtown L.A. Each building showcases a hero from Final Fantasy XIII. From left to right: Vanille, Snow, and the game’s protagonist Lightning.

As much as I love Philadelphia, the sight of giant Lightning further compels me to relocate to California. Hopefully their showing at E3 will be just as impressive as their building-sized teasers.

The Square Enix Members blog posted three photos in all. Check out the rest after the jump. (more…)

OMG WTF BBQ

star wars apron

Oh, the life of a geek girl. Sure, I have a Google Alert set for Battlestar Galactica and tons of action figures..

but I do have other interests… like running, sweet tunes, more sweet tunes, design …AND HAMBURGERS.

It’s BBQ season.. and I came across some sweet geek-approved aprons for the grill. These ones are all Star Wars but there are many more where that came from. I kind of really want one. With that said, I’m single and will take any of these as courting gifts.
