Noby Noby Boy Sneakers – I love how the green lace swirls around the side like that. Thanks for the link, Lex!

Watchmen Embroidery Designs – Geekadelphia is now hiring someone to make stuff with these. Please inquire within. Thanks.

Custom Made Gameboy Plushies – Aw. I never wanted to hug a Gameboy so badly. Actually. I did. Once. And Ben got really angry when I broke his DS. Such was the power of my hug.

Snow White Macbook – Great use of decals.

Super Mario Bros Crocheted Blanket - Wow, that’s some serious dedication right there.

Mega Man Inspired Pumas: Sweet Kicks

mega_man_pumas

I’ll be honest, I’m not one of those guys who are really into sneakers. I don’t skulk around Ubiq here in Philadelphia and swoon over the latest kicks, all of which pretty much look the same in my opinion.

However, the 917 Lo Mega shoes by Puma have definitely managed to grab my attention. Why? Because they’re inspired by Mega Man.

A fantastic material and color update inspired by Mega Man, a video game first released by Capcom in 1987. Whether you’re familiar with the character or not, this synthetic leather material looks and feels like vinyl, giving the upper a shiny, retro-futuristic look.

The addition of the perforated underlays, painted eyelets, & video game inspired pixelated emboss on the toe bumper complete this awesome look.

These kicks will run you a solid $65. Totally worth it.

New Star Trek Clips Showcase Kirk, Bones Goodness

Paramount’s enormous marketing push for Star Trek continues with two — count ‘em, two — new clips released yesterday on the interwebs. The clip above, an exclusive from the MTV Movies Blog, gives us an extended look at Kirk’s bar brawl against some of Starfleet’s finest. In the process, Chris Pine exudes the essence of James T. Kirk as a brash youth.

The second clip, which can be seen over at Yahoo! Movies, shows how perfectly Karl Urban pulls off DeForest Kelley’s Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy. His performance is seriously uncanny. When I showed this scene to my father, a die-hard fan of The Original Series, a big dumb grin spread across his face and he said matter-of-factly, “That is McCoy.”

Kirk and Bones on Shuttle Craft

All-in-all, these clips (plus repeated abuse of the most recent Star Trek trailer) have left me with a raging nerdon. Both videos give us a glimpse at how much more believably human Kirk and the Enterprise crew are being portrayed, and it’s quite awesome. Of course, that’s just my opinion. What do you think?

Web Trends Map Version 4

Information Architects' Web Trends Map 2009

It’s here! Well, let me clarify: Information Architects’ latest version of their popular Web Trends Map is available for your viewing pleasure. Aside from being just a stunning design (I’m pretty much in love with it) it illustrates the trendsetters of the internet in the form of the Tokyo subway system.

It’s not for sale just yet, but if it’s anything like last year’s version, it’ll have a limited edition of 1000 and be priced around $50.  You have to email them to reserve your copy – so get on that!

Check out the Final version here

King Leonidas Sackboy: This Is Spar… Little Big Planet

leonidas_sackboy

Alright, total honesty? I’ve never played Little Big Planet. Nor am I a fan of the overpriced Playstation 3. However I am obsessed with the Sackboy character. It’s freaking adorable and impossible not to like. So whenever Maggie Wang posts another custom-made Sackboy craft, you better believe I’m posting about it here.

Maggie Wang’s recent craft, a King Leonidas Sackboy, is definitely my favorite of her past creations, which include a Prince of Persia and Hellboy. Here’s a bit about the creation process.

I went with an antique brass tone zipper for him, and crocheted his hair and beard freehand in one piece. The removable helm was made in three separate pieces: cap, a wraparound piece that included the front crown and cheek guards, and the plume, which is further stiffened with black felt and the selective use of a glue gun.

His shield was crocheted with a double thickness of yarn for more stability using a larger hook. The cloak was made from a nice stretch knit with a lot of drape and tied with red bias tape. He’ll be getting a proper spear made from a painted bamboo skewer with a polymer clay spearhead tonight to finish his look.

Seriously Maggie, I know you take commissions, and I am going to take full advantage of that in the near future.

NES Modern Classics: Dead Space & Fallout 3

nes_classics

B. Miggs over at T-Minus World is one creative fellah. Last year, he created some incredibly well done ‘demakes’ of modern game boxes, picturing what they’d look like as Atari game packaging. Now, he’s up to something else. NES games.

The Nintendo Entertainment System’s “black box” line is home to some of the most classic and iconic video game box covers of all time. With an emphasis on bold colors and exciting action scenes, their distinct look helped dictate a potential purchase before internet reviews and message boards did all the talking. But what if modern video games were repackaged through the same means? Well, since it worked for Atari games, here are the Minus World’s NES Modern Classics, an old take on the new gaming masterpieces of today.

In addition to my two favorites, Fallout 3 and Dead Space, he’s got a lot more. Go take a look! NES Modern Classics via Kotaku

8static Won’t Stop

8static
8static just won’t stop. Philadelphia’s monthly chiptunes event rocks out again this weekend, with some seriously impressive artists. On deck for audio this month are minusbaby, Balún, and autoscroll. From the website, it looks like VBLANK is doing the heavy lifting for visuals all alone. I’m thinking we either have a surprise VJ on deck, or they managed to pull off cloning technology over at The Hacktory.

This is the worlds most awesome chiptunes show, and these guys have done a great thing by making it an all ages show. Come, and bring your Jr sized friends and family, and get those kids converted to geeks while they are still young. The Geek Shall Inherit The Earth, and they are going to have a sweet sweet soundtrack.

The Bic Pen: According to Amazon, It Can Do Anything

bic_pen_guy

Bic Pen Guy illustration by Dudmatic

If you head over to Amazon’s review page for the box of 12 Bic Cristal Ballpoint Pens, you are in for a hilarious treat. Amazon users have taken it upon themselves to write some truly outstanding reviews for this seemingly ordinary product.

Do you recall the old Bic commercials where they fire a Bic pen into a piece of wood and it still writes? Well I do, but I never really believed it. That is, until I had the necessary task of defending my life with the aid of a Bic pen. Coming home and alarming an intruder, I found myself locked in mortal combat with a very large man who was intent on killing me. My only weapon was the Bic Cristal ballpoint pen I routinely carry in the breast pocket of my starched white pinpoint oxford button down.

And the reviews only get better. From haiku, to lengthy tales of space travel, to suggesting you murder the Bic pen’s family while it watches (otherwise, how else will it do what you want it to), these reviews are excellent.

Have a look and a laugh.

Looking Into The Past: Fun With Archived Photos

looking_into_the_past

into_the_past_

I am in love with this idea. Inspired by Michael Hughes’ hilarious Souvenirs photo project (do check this out), Jasone Powell has started a series called ‘Looking Into The Past’.

Images are made by finding old photographs of places, printing them out, and then holding the print up in the modern day location that the original photograph was taken. So far, all historical images have been available for free at the Library of Congress.

He’s created a group on Flickr for this project, for those of you shooting your own.

This sort of thing is PERFECT for us folks living here in Philadelphia, what with awesome websites like Philly History and all. We have tons of archival photography from all around the city.

Who’s up for a little photography fun? The weather is warm and the city is waiting.

Speaking of looking into the past, looking back at Geekadelphia’s post archive today, I realized that this post is the 1000th post on the website. Awesome. Thanks for reading, everyone!

This Month @ Brave New Worlds

jw

Our friend’s over at Brave New Worlds are a busy lot. Tomorrow starting at  6:30 they will host the Autumn Society of Philadelphia’s Joker’s Wild gallery. The first friday exhibit will show off  Batman‘s greatest villain as interpreted by different artists. I will be there, and I won’t look like the saddest kid in the comic book store like I did during the Watchmen party.

Check out what else is in store this month after the break. (more…)

Hunter S Thompson: Now in Motivational Posters

living_poster

One of the guys over on Sloshspot created a wonderful collection of Hunter S. Thompson quotes, placed on motivational posters. From the hysterical to the poignant, he’s done a wonderful job. Bravo. And seriously, who doesn’t love Thompson?

I got to thinking about one of the most prominent and outspoken substance-mixers of our time, the late Hunter S. Thompson. A man who graciously documented the uncharted depths of the binge unlike any other in history, HST provided us with nuggets of wisdom and encouragement all along the way.

So instead of merely sharing a list of my favorite quotes from the author, I have placed them in their proper environment, the pervasive motivational poster.

Ah, motivational posters, you are the eternal joke of the internets. These will surely grace hundreds of message boards.
