How To Make Your Own Bantha

plush_bantha

Every Tusken Raider needs a trusty bantha to ride around Tatooine. These elephant-sized creatures with long ram-like horns first showed up in A New Hope.

It’s easy to make your own cuddly bantha with some felt, stuffing, thread and a lot of love.

What the directions don’t mention, is how easy it is to make one of these when you force a talented Philly crafter to do it for you. Get to work, Sara. Thnx.

Star Trek Corset: Rawr!

star_trek_corset

Well, if anything was going to get us more excited about the upcoming Star Trek exhibit at the Franklin here in Philadelphia, it would most certainly be this. A Star Trek corset, available on Etsy. Will the exhibit’s guides be wearing this? Here’s hoping.

Designed after the jumpsuits featured on Star Trek: The Next Generation, this foxy piece of clothing will run my girlfriend $200. Heather, get to purchasing. Thanks.

I saved some shots in the gallery below. Visit the Etsy seller’s page for more information. She’s still got two available.

Thanks to Rommel for the link!

Philly Comic Artists Compete and Raise Money

get-attachmentaspx

A few weeks ago I interviewed the creators of  Black Cherry Bombshells who are featured on DC ComicsZuda site. During the interview, they mentioned the other members of their team, one of whom was colorist John Dallaire.  Dallaire, along with Pinkraygun co-founder Lisa Fary, is also competing in the newest round of the Zuda competition with his comic Intergalactic Law: Grey Squad .  Here’s a short plot synopsis:

Intergalactic Law: Grey Squad is a science fiction police comic inspired by Barney Miller and Serpico, set in an intergalactic police station. The comic tells the story of Detective Janet Moore, the newest – and youngest – addition to a famously peaceful precinct where cops go to countdown the days until retirement. While Moore adjusts to her new assignment, she uncovers a web of corruption that threatens the entire department.

The competition began last Monday and runs until April 30th. Currently Grey Squad is ranked in 5th place, but hopefully there are folks out there who will help raise that rank. Not only are Fary and Dallaire using this opportunity to show off their work, they are also using the comic to raise money for a worthy cause. Fary and Dallaire will put forth twenty five cents for every comment their comic receives to the Fraternal Order of Police survivor’s fund with a goal of raising $1,000. Also, once you vote and leave a comment, you are eligible to win a $25 gift certificate to Geno’s or Pat’s. In their press release, Fary stated that no matter the outcome of the competition, they know they are contributing to a bigger cause.

“We’re putting a lot of effort into promoting Intergalactic Law: Grey Squad,” Fary said. “Of course we’d like to win, but regardless of Grey Squad’s performance in DC’s competition, we’d like the effort to go toward something meaningful and benefit something greater than ourselves.”

I believe we have enough Geekadelphians out there to help John and Lisa reach their goal and then some. We here at Geekadelphia wish Lisa and John good luck in the remaining weeks of the competition.

Geekadelphia Contests: Win The Spirit Special Edition Blu-Ray

the_spirit

Contest is over. Congrats to Zack Reese!

Let me start off with this. The Spirit is not a good movie. Seriously, it isn’t. However, like Starship Troopers, Reign of Fire, Fast & The Furious, or any other number of high budget, special effects, and eye candy ridden blockbuster flicks, The Spirit is unquestionably entertaining.

Whether you’re busy being baffled by the bizarre dialogue (I don’t like eggs on my face!), checking out the gorgeous, overly sexual women, or marveling at the blatant Sin City cinematography rip-off, there is quite a bit to enjoy in this bad flick.

This two disc special edition blu-ray of The Spirit comes with a bonus digital copy and a TON of extra content. This includes several featurettes that detail the making of the film, the artistry of Frank Miller, and a look inside Will Eisner’s comic book world. You’ll also see an alternate ending, get audio commentary by Miller, and more. Also, it’s a blu-ray.

Want to win a copy? Hit up the comments and let us know what YOUR favorite, special effects laden, full of awful dialogue, bad movie is, and why. Leave us a quote from the flick. We’ll pick one of you at random, and announce the winner on Friday.

Good luck!

Philly’s Hottest Nerd: Vote Mark!

mark_s

My pal Anna over at Shmitten Kitten, Philadelphia’s prime blog about dudes, dating, and dating Philly dudes, is currently featuring a Philly’s Hottest Nerd contest on the site. As of this post, you can cast your votes right smack on the homepage. No, Tim and I are not included in the mix. I blame the disfiguring hump on my back.

Anyhow, we here at Geekadelphia are casting our votes towards the A/V Nerd, Mark Schoneveld, and encourage you to do so as well. Why? While Shmitten Kitten compares him to “mac ‘n’ cheese” with “a mustache and a respectable presence on the Internet,” I’ve got my own reasons.

Here are my top three reasons why I’m voting for Mark Schoneveld. And why you should too.

1. He taught me how to love a woman, and how to scold a child.

2. His beard is a delicate combination of King Leonidas, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Pei Mei in Kill Bill, Sinterklass, the bad ass Dutch version of Santa, Chuck Norris (complete with third fist), King Tut (dude’s beard was made of gold), Steampunk Lincoln, Zombie Lincoln, and this guy.

3. He’s easily the most talented film guy in Philadelphia, and is incredibly humble about it. He has better taste in music than you, your Mom, and everyone that works at AKA Music. Mark has been one of Geekadelphia’s biggest supporters from the beginning of the site. He constantly sends me links and tips, and frequently Twitters out my ramblings.

You know, number 3 may have been several reasons at once. I don’t think there is any kind of prize, other than sweet bragging rights, but cast a vote. Just takes a click.

Good luck Mark!

Snoozebot: iPhone App Launched by Local Philly Folks

snoozebot

I always get pretty psyched when I hear about Philadelphians and their tech-related projects, but I almost never seem to get around to writing about them. This is mostly due to being lazy, playing way too many video games, and getting far too excited about crafts. Thank goodness for the dudes over at Technically Philly. I get my tech community updates from those cats, and they’re always spot on. Someday I’ll steal them for myself. I could use a little more Brian James Kirk in my life.

But I digress.

One of my pals, Laris Kreslins, shot me an email the other day about an iPhone application he’s been hard at work on, which launched a few weeks ago. Called Snoozebot, this simple, handy little app serves as a snooze button whenever you need one. You can set it up in 5 or 10 minute increments for whatever purpose. Naps, workouts, remembering to harass your bloggers to post more… whatever!

You can check it out over at the iTunes store if you’re interested. And let’s face it. You are.

Congrats Laris, to you and your whole team.

Geeky Links: Upcoming Bad Video Game Movies

Spyro The Movie: 3D – From the producers of Eragon, comes Spyro the Movie: 3D. Featuring Elijah Wood as the voice of Spyro. Ugh. The fact that the dude who directed Spawn is directing this though… perhaps. Perhaps there is hope.

Shadow of the Colossus: The Movie – Dustin let out a scream heard all the way from South Philly when this was announced. Brought to you by the Oscar winning writer of Street Fighter: Chun Li. Great.

Bloodrayne III: Warhammer – Really, Boll? Is there seriously a need for a third one?

Street Fighter Kids: Inspires Awes, Not Hadoukens

Aww!

See? I told you.

Meet Kei Acedera, an illustrator over at Imaginism. She’s the one responsible for creating this wonderful drawing of characters from Super Street Fighter II Turbo playing out in a lovely field, getting along peacefully instead of kicking each others asses. Visit her portfolio to see the full illustration in all its glory. I really want a print of this!

The site also boasts an impressive library of beautiful desktop wallpapers. This one, entitled First Line of Defense, is probably my favorite.

Happy Easter From Geekadelphia: Beware of Buns

keetin_bun

buns_pups

My buddy Mary sent me over this link to The Cat’s Meow, a blog dedicated to kittens. They’ve issued a stern warning to beware of possible identity theft this Easter season, by sneaky buns that want to replace your cat and/or dog.

Anyhow, Happy Easter to all our readers out there. Have a wonderful and safe holiday weekend.

Stargate Wedding Cake: Transports You To a Universe of Commitment

stargate_wedding_cake_2

Wow!

Gateworld Forum user Dr. Scareys Event Horizon 1.0 (yes, that’s his message board name) got married last fall on September 27th, and his wife’s (awesome) parents threw together this delicious looking Stargate cake for the bride and groom.

Absolutely everything on the top display is hand made, including the wormhole connection which is hand painted icing. And apparently the gate is symbol correct as well.

You can’t see them too well but the bottom tier has earth glyphs running all around the outside of the cake, and non gate related.. the roses on the bottom tier are also hand made and edible.

You can check out some more photos of the cake, as well as a picture of the happy couple, over on the Gateworld Forum. Congrats, Dr. Scarey!

Vodka Gummi Bears: How To Make ‘Em

drunk_gummi_bear

Vodka gummi bears?! You can check out the entire how to over on Mix That Drink. There are an array of different variations on the alcoholic gummi, thanks to these folks.

The how-to part of this is pretty simple, so I decided to make things a little more interesting. In addition to regular vodka gummi bears, I made vodka sugar-free gummi bears, vodka gummi worms (purely to see if they turned out any cooler looking than the bears) and vodka Red Fish (these were disgusting, but in the interest of science I will share my mistakes as well as my triumphs).

Served up at the next Geekadelphia party? You bet.

Hey! Bianca! Get to work.

Gamers: The Mentality

gamers_motivational_poster

Hilarious because it’s true.

Unless of course you’re Ben. In which case, that object in the mirror is about to catch up and pwn the hell out of you. Possibly with a blue shell or an energy sword.
