Threepio’s GTO

threepios_gto

In keeping with this current barrage of art posts, I wanted to chime in with this fantastic print of C3PO standing next to his GTO by Lil’ Tuffy.  It’s a 23″x35″ single color screenprint being released in an edition of 50 for $50 each at the Secret Serpent Store.

It’s quite good, and probably looks awesome framed, but I think it needs just one or two more additional hues to give it just a little more depth.  I’m a sucker for any amalgamation of pop culture and Star Wars though, so don’t be surprised if I end up having a copy in my living room next to Tim Doyle’s “Change Into A Truck”

Odysseus & The Cyclops: Steampunk Style

odysseus_cyclops_steampunk

Wow. Check out this steampunk version of Odysseus and the cyclops, created by filmmaker Arthur Mirzoyan. The video shows the trailer, a brief making-of, and finally, the short film in its entirety. As a nerdy part-time literature professor, I’ve got to say, this little film absolutely thrills me. Totally showing this to my class on Wednesday.

I recommended loading up the film in its entirety first, otherwise it’ll be choppy as hell. Took me a good 15 minutes, but it was totally worth it.

Bonus: Take a look at his rendering and interpretation of Icarus. I am definitely keeping an eye on this guy and his work.

End of the World Street Art

i-can-fly

Behold. The awesome three dimensional street art of Edgar Mueller. You’ve no doubt heard of Julian Beever, the famous 3D artist who works in chalk. Edgar, creates his pieces in paint. The result is absolutely breathtaking.

I’ve put two more favorites in the gallery below, have a look. For some more cool images, head over to Mueller’s official website, where you can learn more about this talented artist and his fantastic work.

Oh! And our pals at Geekologie have a sweet ‘making of’ video on their page. Go visit their site and watch it.

Atari Cake: Tastes Like Vintage Gaming

ataricake

Wow! Check out this delicious looking Atari 2600 Console Cake. It was created by Cakes by the Pound, a bakery in Southern California that specializes in ‘edible works of art.’ Everything is edible, including that woodgrain looking board. That’s a special icing! Unreal!

I think I’ll tap Philadelphia’s Whipped Bake Shop to make something similar, only I’ll insist that it be able to play Keystone Cops. Oooh, or Pitfall! How sweet would that be? Maybe get some of John Freeborn’s scorpions running around the bottom. Awesome.

Hands-On: Quake Live Open Beta (Windows)

293456-quakelive2-edit2

Yes folks, id Software’s Quake Live, the 100% free (advertising paid) and browser based edition of Quake III Arena, released in open beta February 24th. Forget all of your preconceptions of beta testing games as the title runs without nearly any hitches. Well, at least hitches affecting core game play mechanics, but we’ll get into that later.

The game retains everything you hardcore Quake fans out there love about the first-person shooter (FPS) on steroids and Muscle Milk. The ridiculously explosive weapons, the goofy man-grunts, and intoxicating trance tunes are all included for your late night (or early morning) binges of blink-less fragging. Find more details after the break.

104 Ways to ruin Watchmen

BEHOLD MY SNUGGIE

I went to the midnight opening of Watchmen with some friends last night, so I do have a few things to say about the movie.  My mind is still reeling, however, and until I can compose a set of coherent thoughts into a post, this gallery will surely bring a chuckle or two.

Gizmodo decided to run a Photoshop contest last week to see what their readers could do to ruin the movie (sort of) by changing certain things in a single frame from the movie.

Check them out, whether you’re a fan or not, because some of them are surprisingly done well (not including the one I included above.  The Snuggie is just hilarious on it’s own.)

We seem to love it when geek icons of the past come together on a T-shirt like this.  Ghostbusters + Pac-man Ghosts?  Awesome.  It’s rendered in fantastic 8-bit style too, so basically you have no excuse to pass this one up.  Head on over to the Glennz Tees store to get yours.

The Beatles: Rock Band Announced and Detailed

rockbandbeatles

Although the game was announced way back in late October, we’d heard nothing more on the Harmonix-developed, Beatles-themed Rock Band game than the fact that it was in development … until today! The official press release from Apple Corps. and Harmonix this morning titles the game The Beatles: Rock Band (keeping the branding, eh?) and sets it to release on Xbox 360/PS3/Wii on Sept. 9.

In keeping with the plastic instrument/rhythym game tradition of releasing multiple SKUs with multiple price points, Harmonix has detailed the packages as follows:

  • The Beatles: Rock Band Software – Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii: $59.99 MSRP
  • The Beatles: Rock Band Standalone Guitars – Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii: $99.99 MSRP
  • The Beatles: Rock Band Limited Edition Premium Bundle -Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii: $249.99 MSRP

For the time being, we’re sticking with our already perfectly capable plastic instruments and picking up the $59.99 version, thank you very much. If you’re hankerin’ for some teasin’, the game’s official site is now open and lookin’ mighty classy if we do say so ourselves.

John Freeborn’s Tricolored Joystick Prints

joystick_pixel_painting

What can I say? I’m a bit of a John Freeborn fanboy. It wasn’t that long ago that I highlighted Freeborn’s sweet looking joystick necklaces. Today I bring you his joystick prints.

The prints are created using a custom printed pattern of dots, which are then filled in by hand into the joystick patterns. Printed on 11″ x “17″ paper, Freeborn painstakingly slaves over each image, and the result is rather impressive.

They’ll run you $60 a print on Etsy. I’ve got a couple more shots below. Check ‘em out. You know want one.

Lost Planet 2 Announced: Scope Out the Trailer!

Ah, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition. One of my favorite experiences on the XBox 360. Enormous enemies, epic boss battles, beautiful graphics, and an engaging story made it one of the best games of 2007. At least, in my fine opinion.

Well, the sequel is on its way. Consider yourself fortunate that you didn’t hear my extremely giddy squeal when the trailer popped up on XBox Live.

Our friends at Joystiq have the trailer on their site. You can skip to about 1:30 to start watching the actual footage from the game. Get excited people.
