Super Mario Land: Laser Etched Laptop

super-mario-etched-laptop

This excellent laser etched laptop has already made its way around the interwebs, but I figured I’d share it with you anyway.

Flickr user Revolving Dork had the entire Super Mario Land map etched onto the case of his Eee laptop. The attention to detail is unbelievable. If you’ve never played the original Super Mario Land for the Game Boy, well, you are missing out. Go download the ROM or something.

According to the artist…

Everything from the familiar layouts of 1-1 to the climactic battle with Tatanga in the clouds at the end of 4-3 is represented in the etching.

He’s also provided the pattern so you can get your very own etched map. You can check it out on Thingiverse.

You can see the entire Flickr gallery of the laptop, here. Thanks to Sara, the queen of all things cute and handmade, for the link.

Pac-Man Pranks: Giving Geekadelphia Serious Ideas

Urban Prankster has an outstanding collection of real life Pac-Man chases. There are a TON of these on YouTube, but they’ve selected the very best.

How cool would it be to built a giant Pac-Man and Ghost, and run around Old City like this? That would definitely give the tourists something to remember.

Ideas are brewing. I’m up to no good.

Thanks to John Freeborn for the link, who will inevitably be an accomplice to this.

Gamer Valentines by BS Angel

gamer-valentines

You know, leave it to my favorite female videogame blogger, Hawty McBloggy, to whip up these hysterical Halo inspired Valentines. I’m looking forward to eventually playing a game with her on Xbox Live. We’re friends on there and all, but I’ve yet to play against her, mostly out of fear and respect.

The Valentines feature some classic gamer pick-up lines that are guaranteed to either “get you some virtual action or… get you slapped.” And with lines like “I was following the indicator of where to score and it brought me straight to you” we can see why.

For just $5, you’ll get six mini Valentines, made out of card-stock and held together with a nice ribbon. Read up some of the sentiments on the Valentines after the jump.

Back to the Future: In Lego

back-to-the-future-lego-kit

Marty! We have to go back! It’s your kids Marty, your kids!

Ah, if only this were a real Lego kit that I could buy in stores. I’d be all over this. Check out the full size image over on Legohaulic’s Flickr page.

Bonus: I love that Family Guy episode where they reenact this scene. Too late, Doc. Classic.

Ryan Crippen’s Custom Dig Dug Dunnies

dig-dug-dunnies

I like vinyl toys, but I’m not really into the whole Dunny thing the way some people (*coughTIMcough*) are. However these wonderful Dig Dug Dunnies by Ryan Crippen, the man behind Reactor 88, have certainly grabbed my attention.

Just look at them! You’ve got Pooka, Fygar, and the main man himself, Dig Dug.

You can read up more on these custom Dunnies over on Ryan’s blog.

If Only Movie Posters Were This Honest

rambo-movie-honest-poster

Ah, movie posters. If only you were as honest (and funny) as the posters over on Holy Taco. If you were, there’s an epic chance I wouldn’t have seen City of Ember, that hour and a half crapfest. The Life Aquatic poster on the site perfectly sums up why I saw City of Ember, though it should be noted that The Life Aquatic is an awesome movie, regardless of Bill Murray.

But I digress. Go check out the rest of the posters.

And yes, in case you are wondering, I did see the recent Rambo. And it was awesome.

Apple Cookies: The Computer, Not the Fruit

apple-logo-cookies

Zoe Lukas, our favorite cookie maker from Philly’s own Whipped Bakeshop, created these tasty looking Apple logo cookies. They’re “vanilla sugar cookie with almond royal icing. Made with a handmade custom cutter.” Simple and sweet.

You can see the full size image over on her Flickr. I hear these cookies not only look nice, but are very user friendly. Unlike her Window’s Vista cookies, which tend to freeze and lock up in your mouth for no reason at all.

Guitar Hero: World Tour Doubles Rock Band 2 Sales, Hurts Our Brains

kotick-from-forbes-edited

Well folks, we’re nearly a full month into 2009 and as such, the folks with the giant calculators and pocket protectors have broken down some of last year’s sales figures for us to base exaggerated headlines around analyze. And though there are certainly greater extrapolations to take out of 2008′s best selling games list, The NPD Group has compiled the various versions of both Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2 for comparisons sake. And what did they find? Mind-boggilingly, Guitar Hero outsold Rock Band at nearly 2:1.

Over the course of 2008, Guitar Hero: World Tour loosed 3.4 million copies (across all version of their game) onto an unsuspecting American populace only too happy to gobble up its “Hot Topic”-based version of “Rock’n'Roll”, while Rock Band 2 sold only 1.7 million copies (again, across all versions). One explanation could be the relative brand power of the Guitar Hero franchise versus the less well-known Rock Band (and Forbes isn’t helping the situation!). Another could be the varied release schedule of Rock Band 2 across different consoles versus the single day release of all Guitar Hero: World Tour versions. Either way, while we’re not baffled as to why something like this might occur, we are disappointed.

You can do better than this, America! We know you can!

Us Philadelphians might have urban cowboys, but Pittsburgh has Final Fantasy characters.

Ah, the things one can find using Google Maps.

Enjoy.

Hellboy Amigurumi: Cute & Impossible To Spell

hellboy-animunigo

Seriously, there is no way I will EVER be able to spell ‘amigurumi’ without looking it up or text messaging my favorite crafters Alexis Lerro or Sara Selepouchin. In fact, while trying to name that image, I just gave up and hit a bunch of letters at the end. What a weird word.

Anyhow, this cute animi… anum… handmade Hellboy comes from Geek Central Station, the same folks who made that uber cute handmade Kratos. Take a look at some more pictures on their site.

Oh, and what’s with Hellboy II: The Golden Army only getting ONE Oscar nomination? I’m furious.

Star Wars: Retold By Someone Who Hasn’t Seen It

Star Wars: Retold (by someone who hasn’t seen it) from Joe Nicolosi on Vimeo.

Easily one of the funniest videos I’ve seen in a long, long time.

My friend Amanda had never seen a whole Star Wars film. When I asked her if she wanted to watch the original trilogy she said that she would, but that she already knew what happens. So I took out my voice recorder and asked her to start from the top.

I then created some very basic animation in Final Cut to go along with her narration.

Thanks to the guys at Fun Vampires for the link.
