@Blade Definitely not trying to bash anything. The point in me writing this piece was to explore GameStop’s policy regarding the discontinued 60GB PS3 model and what they would do if I owned one and it broke. As far as I’m concerned, you’re right. If you’re happy with your PS3, then awesome. I’m glad to hear it.

The 80GB model you own does play, as referenced in the piece above, 80% of PS1/PS2 games. The 60GB model, however, plays 100%. But to be honest with you, for my 400-600 dollars, I’d like the ability to play PS2 games as well, especially considering the rather lackluster PS3 lineup (excluding a few notable exceptions in Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune).

Is this article trying to bash the PS3?! or is it just me? I mean, come on, if you really enjoy playing ps2 games so badly,then have fun with your ps2 system and don’t bother to get the ps3… Until you actually want to play the next gen games. Its Simple as that! I bought the ps3 to play ps3 games. I didn’t pay $500 bucks just so that I can play with slightly upscaled graphics on the ps3, that would just be stupid! Also, my 80g w/ motor storm so far has played every ps1 and ps2 games so far.. But I’d rather play them on my ps2 since both systems are side by side.

My point, get over that backwards compatibility bulls*it and enjoy the ps3 for what it can do, not for what it use to do…

the 60GB is so bad, So i’m glad SONY discontinued it, it always freezes and won’t always load the picture. Bought it in June/14/07 and now 1/1/09 i’m now sending it back for the FOURTH TIME for repair, AMERICAN EXPRESS credit card members be advised you can get an EXTENDED WARRANTEE for ANOTHER FULL year one the PS3s. they were nice enough to refund my purchase $399 and am planning on getting a new one the next time it brakes, this truly SONYs worst product out on the market none of thier other products!

My PS3 wont read games. Ihave to put GTA4 in 30 times. Call of Duty works. PES and little Big Planet dont.
Blueray DVDs dont work either.

I had the same problem when playing grand theft auto IV, for about 1 hour then upgraded to version 2.3 now i can not play any games nor movies, What i have noticed is that the ps3 recognises that there is a disc in the machine but it does not spin the disc and as when the disc goes in label up right it comes out the same way. I also know of five other cases where this is the same thing

I also had the same problem where I was playing GTA1V and for about 1 hour and then upgraded to v 2.3 and now my playstation will not play any disc

I found this on the U.S. Playstion.com Website’s Community Boards under “Playstation 3 General” (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&message.id=2840297):

“I have an 80 gig bought Dec 30′th 07. Kept clean and well ventilated. Bought GTAIV, played for about an hour and a half and it froze. I restarted and from then on it would not read any disks. Would just load forever and not recognize any games. Called GameStop and they couldn’t replace cause the automatic 3 months warranty they gave was expired. Called Sony, gave information, and they’re sending over a box to send in for free (they have a 1 year warranty). Should have a fixt PS3 by June.

[Edit] Also, I had just updated firmware to 2.3 or whatever it was, the newest one, just before i started playing GTA. I don’t know if that affects anything but that’s what I had. ”

I think that last edit says a lot. It’s likely a Firmware 2.3 problem that only affected a small amount of people and it also seems to be something that affects all PS3 models. I will put in a query to Sony and see what I can find out for you. Sorry about all the problems you’ve had!
