Let me start this off by openly stating that, unfortunately, none of us here at the Geek own a Playstation 3. That being said, we’re not secretly Nintendo/Microsoft/N-Gage fanboys, we’re just waiting for a compelling reason to drop the entire bankroll. We’re no fools though; if we’re going to buy a Playstation 3, we’d want the real deal — full backwards compatibility (aka: the ability to play ALL of our favorite Playstation 2 games). Savvy geeks reading this post may be loudly exclaiming, “Then you’ll want the 60gb version, but that doesn’t exist anymore!” And we know this.
Regardless, buying one at this point made us wonder out loud: What happens if it breaks? Even with a GameStop extended warranty, who’s to say they would have the stock to replace it equally? Furthermore, if I had bought a 60gb system at launch (same situation, same retailer, new system this time), what would they do to remedy the situation? We put that question to a number of different GameStop employees… and their answers might shock you.
For the sake of our sources, we’re not naming any names. We blind-called three separate GameStop locations (Stamford, Ct., Waterbury, Ct. and Philadelphia, Pa.) and asked two specific questions:
1.) What would GameStop do if I purchased a used 60gb Playstation 3 with a warranty and it broke?
2.) What would GameStop do if I purchased a new 60gb Playstation 3 with a warranty and it broke?
Across the board, the question of what GameStop would do about my broken used 60gb Playstation 3 was answered exactly the same: “We’d find you another and replace it.” That’s fair — the used iteration of this model is most certainly still available in the world for sale. Our second question, however, proved to be far more vexxing for our friends at GameStop. First up: Philadelphia, Pa. Our dialog went as follows:
Geek: What would GameStop do if I purchased a new 60gb Playstation 3 with a warranty and it broke?
GameStop: “You’d have to take a refurbished one.”
Geek: “So you wouldn’t give me the 170 dollar difference?”
GameStop: “No, you’d lose the money.”
Oh my! That’s alotta dimp! Unsurprisingly, GameStop locations in the ‘burbs had a slightly different take on the situation. Next up, my hometown: Stamford, Ct.:
Geek: What would GameStop do if I purchased a new 60gb Playstation 3 with a warranty and it broke?
GameStop: “You’d have to speak to a manager. It would need to be put through corporate.”
Geek: “They’d get me another new 60gb PS3?”
GameStop: “Yes.”
Geek: “Do you know where they get them?”
GameStop: “No, I’m sorry, you’d have to ask the manager.”
Hmmm, sounds a bit like an employee without enough information. At our final store location, Waterbury, Ct., the employee was about as helpful as she could possibly have been — called two other locations looking for a new 60gb PS3 system that her computer said might be in stock, called her manager at home — and was super friendly on top of that. (Note: The further into the woods your GameStop is located, the friendlier/more helpful the employees are.) Eventually, she came up with a fairly solid answer (emphasis on “fairly”) after speaking with her manager:
Geek: What would GameStop do if I purchased a new 60gb Playstation 3 with a warranty and it broke?
GameStop: “We have someone that we e-mail in the company when something like that happens.”
On top of that, she explained that the person she would contact would then send her store a refurbished Playstation 3 — still not getting a new one back. When asked what GameStop would do about the $170 discrepancy between the new 60gb Playstation 3 price of $600 and the refurbished 60gb Playstation 3 price of $430, I was referred to a manager who works at a later time (read as: tomorrow).
So, final verdict? The 60gb Playstation 3 that launched as the most expensive system of the current generation (again, $600), the one with a Playstion 2 built into it and thus allowing for full backwards compatibility — if you break it, it’s gone, never to return exactly the same. Le sigh.

that is disheartening.
I really don’t get the point if this. You’re theorizing about buying a brand new system which isn’t in production anymore for $600 when they’re a better (80GB), cheaper version that’s bundled with MGS4.
I know you’re aware of a such bundle, so why write this article?
@CTG: The point to make is that the 80gb is not the “better” model, it just has a bigger hard drive. It is cheaper than the original launch price of the 60gb but it also lacks any backwards compatibility whatsoever — a major problem and the sticking point of this piece. More importantly, we wanted to know what the number one game retailer in the US would do if we presented them with a broken system that’s no longer in production. I hope that answers your question!
The 80GB does not lack backwards compatibility. I own one and specifically waited for that model for that very feature.
If you’ll do me the favor of referencing the table I linked above (and once again, right here: http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/26/tabulator-comparing-the-playstation-3-skus/), you’ll see that the 80gb model you’re talking about has about 80% backwards compatibility with PS2 games — it’s software emulation. The original 60gb model has full backwards compatibility — as in, there’s a friggin’ ps2 built into that model. You do have SOME backwards compat, but for our cases, we’d prefer the model with FULL backwards compat. Sorry for the confusion!
I should also note that there is an 80gb model with absolutely no backwards compat, thus creating the confusion above. If Sony would do us all a favor and not fracture the market into a million pieces with all these stupid SKUs, there’d be no confusion at all (or, ya know, at least less).

we own an 80 gig. ps3, bought it from walmart in dec. 06, by new years eve 07, it froze, had the extended warranty, took 8 weeks to get it back to us…here we are nov. 08 and its broke again. i spent 800.00 for it brand new, and got a refurb in its place. now the same thing happened, the fan isn’t running and it turns on, thats about it!! is anyone else having this problem? i’m calling them tommorow as i have two months left on the warranty and will be demanding a brand new one!! we had a first run of the ps2 and not one issue!! this has been a nightmare for 3x the amount. any help is great!
i have a 60gb ps3 from when it first came out the problem is that my blue ray wont play the games for it or dvd’s i put the game in and all it does is you see the loading sign in the right hand side then nothing happens. so i took the whole ps3 apart and took out the blue ray drive thinking that i might just need to clean the lens on the blueray but it didnt work does anybody know of anything else that i can do to get it to work besides buying a whole new blueray for it or trading it out?
may ps3 wont read any discs. If any one has any way to fix this let me know please.
I have a 60GB PS3. Worked fine (DVD, BD, games, etc) until I updated the firmware (fw update required) over the weekend to watch a movie (updated to fw version 2.3). The movie played fine, but then no other disc would play. I checked online and found a newer fw update (2.53) and installed that too. Sadly, it didn’t fix anything: I only see the loading sign when I insert a disc. There’s no icon on either the video or game menu to “manually” start the movie/game. This sounds suspiciously similar to Martin and Geoff’s posts. Did you guys update your firmware? I called Sony and they simply said, “No discs recognized? You’ll have to send the unit in for servicing.” I did see some other posts elsewhere that mentioned formatting the hard drive. I’ll check more into this before mailing my unit to Sony for them to fix what appears to be a firmware “update”.
@Jay, @Geoff, & @Martin:
I found this on the U.S. Playstion.com Website’s Community Boards under “Playstation 3 General” (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&message.id=2840297):
“I have an 80 gig bought Dec 30′th 07. Kept clean and well ventilated. Bought GTAIV, played for about an hour and a half and it froze. I restarted and from then on it would not read any disks. Would just load forever and not recognize any games. Called GameStop and they couldn’t replace cause the automatic 3 months warranty they gave was expired. Called Sony, gave information, and they’re sending over a box to send in for free (they have a 1 year warranty). Should have a fixt PS3 by June.
[Edit] Also, I had just updated firmware to 2.3 or whatever it was, the newest one, just before i started playing GTA. I don’t know if that affects anything but that’s what I had. ”
I think that last edit says a lot. It’s likely a Firmware 2.3 problem that only affected a small amount of people and it also seems to be something that affects all PS3 models. I will put in a query to Sony and see what I can find out for you. Sorry about all the problems you’ve had!
I also had the same problem where I was playing GTA1V and for about 1 hour and then upgraded to v 2.3 and now my playstation will not play any disc
I had the same problem when playing grand theft auto IV, for about 1 hour then upgraded to version 2.3 now i can not play any games nor movies, What i have noticed is that the ps3 recognises that there is a disc in the machine but it does not spin the disc and as when the disc goes in label up right it comes out the same way. I also know of five other cases where this is the same thing
my games doesn’t want to load up i waited about 30 min and nothing can any help me please
My PS3 wont read games. Ihave to put GTA4 in 30 times. Call of Duty works. PES and little Big Planet dont.
Blueray DVDs dont work either.
the 60GB is so bad, So i’m glad SONY discontinued it, it always freezes and won’t always load the picture. Bought it in June/14/07 and now 1/1/09 i’m now sending it back for the FOURTH TIME for repair, AMERICAN EXPRESS credit card members be advised you can get an EXTENDED WARRANTEE for ANOTHER FULL year one the PS3s. they were nice enough to refund my purchase $399 and am planning on getting a new one the next time it brakes, this truly SONYs worst product out on the market none of thier other products!
Is this article trying to bash the PS3?! or is it just me? I mean, come on, if you really enjoy playing ps2 games so badly, then have fun with your ps2 system and don’t bother to get the ps3… Until you actually want to play the next gen games. Its Simple as that! I bought the ps3 to play ps3 games. I didn’t pay $500 bucks just so that I can play with slightly upscaled graphics on the ps3, that would just be stupid! Also, my 80g w/ motor storm so far has played every ps1 and ps2 games so far.. But I’d rather play them on my ps2 since both systems are side by side.
My point, get over that backwards compatibility bulls*it and enjoy the ps3 for what it can do, not for what it use to do…
@Blade Definitely not trying to bash anything. The point in me writing this piece was to explore GameStop’s policy regarding the discontinued 60GB PS3 model and what they would do if I owned one and it broke. As far as I’m concerned, you’re right. If you’re happy with your PS3, then awesome. I’m glad to hear it.
The 80GB model you own does play, as referenced in the piece above, 80% of PS1/PS2 games. The 60GB model, however, plays 100%. But to be honest with you, for my 400-600 dollars, I’d like the ability to play PS2 games as well, especially considering the rather lackluster PS3 lineup (excluding a few notable exceptions in Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune).
