Geekadelphia Tours The Chemical Heritage Foundation

Seeing all kinds of neat things up close and behind-the-scenes is a special kind of joy that only true nerds can appreciate it. When I was invited to come check out The Chemical Heritage Foundation’s new exhibit and museum space, I was absolutely thrilled. Why? Because the space was completely new and in the process of being built. Awesome.

This was the equivalent of checking out the special features on my favorite DVD (which happens to the three disc cut of Hellboy). You never really know what’s going on behind the scenes at a place like this. Sure, people can tell you, but it is an entirely different experience to actually SEE it happening in person. The exhibit, entitled Making Modernity, will be opening on October 3rd, and housed in what is going to be an absolutely beautiful new hall, the Masao Horiba Exhibit Hall.

As I walked through the hall and the new space, I was absolutely wowed by the glass walls, all of which featured gorgeous etchings scientific symbols. While I didn’t understand 90% of them, nor the explanations I was given about their origins, I could still appreciate them for their beauty.

Read up more after the jump. We’ve got a ton of images on our Flickr page and in a gallery below for you to scope out, including more of these beautiful glass etchings.

What is Making Modernity? The exhibition will show off hundreds of artifacts that helped shape our world. A geek hodgepodge of trinkets from art to rare books. And the Chemical Heritage Foundation is absolutely FULL of books. They have one of the most beautiful libraries I’ve ever seen. Just look at that…

When the new space at the museum opens, admission will be free. Which is how all museums should be, in my fine opinion!

I took a ton of photos while inside, all of which you can catch on our Flickr page. There’s also a gallery below for those of you who don’t feel like moving to another website, or maybe have Flickr blocked at your soul crushing corporate job.

Visit the CHF’s official website for more information on the gallery, and get excited. We are.

Was this in honor of the American Chemical Society meeting being in town?

Nope, they just invited me down to check out the place. Gain some press and what-not.

I received a very nice mailing inviting me to attend new exhibition and lecuture series at theChemical Heritage Foundation – the only address I could find on the mailing was on the back right-hand side, very small. No telephone number – no website – no directions. It was a beautiful mailing – which I felt my environmental group would be interested in – but you left out key information.
